Hello All

I'm tempted by MWEB's 1024kbps uncapped service for R588 p/m (ADSL line included). The only trouble is, I love to watch The Daily Show and other American TV streamed online, as well as the occasional ATP tennis, etc. I know that on a 384 kbps line, that's a definite no-no, and even on my current Webafrica 4096 kbps line (officially, 10MB/s, but that's a lie), results are sometimes quite good, sometimes not so much.

So, my question, anyone on MWEB's 1024kbps line shaped, uncapped, service, and what is your experience with video streaming sites?
Thanks for your feedback.

Robert

Hi robkowa,

We do have a try before you buy as hereticangel mentioned.

It is on the following ADSL speeds:

3 options:
Uncapped 384kbps
Uncapped 1024kbps
Uncapped 4096kbps

This product is only available to potential new ADSL Subscribers.

You can sign up via the following link: https://www.mweb.co.za/adslsignup/

Kind regards,

MWEB Guy

I'd suggest rather asking fellow members to test the urls you watch your shows from before making the jump as I'm pretty sure 1mbps will be slower than 4mbps irrespective of the ISP.

Thanks for the responses. MWEB guy, does this involve actually transferring the ADSL line, or can I stay with Webafrica while I try out MWEB?

Cheers.

Hi robkowa,

Your line stays, you'll be testing with our data account.

Kind regards,

MWEB Guy

Yes you can, I stream 360p youtube vids regularly. Don't bother trying to stream at any higher resolutions though. :)

What do you get?

Here are my results... (running 4mbps Mweb uncapped, unshaped with quite a lot downloading occasionally)

Your average video speed at this location from 8 Aug 2011 to 6 Sep 2011 was 2163 Kbps.

Slightly less than half than the Global average which is 5052

well i know on my 4meg uncapped account i stream 720p from youtube(mainly that, also from Justin.tv and one or two other) without any issues, i just wait a few seconds to buffer then hit play. I also watch the GSL on GomTV(which is load-o-crap) on low quality without issues.

I'm thinkin of downgrading to 1mbs uncapped from 4mbs uncapped as well. If streaming at 360p is fine then I'm definitely making the move. Also, what do you guys average on 1mbs uncapped for downloads?

I did 150gb, and a friend did 135 last month. This month I'm just shy of 50 so far

360 is fine. Sometimes 480 works depending on the video. My downloads run on average about 105kbps, varying between 95 and 115. Not really affected by the time of day.

I have the mweb 1mb uncapped package and from what I've experienced 240p is the best and max 360p. Only problem with 360p is it basically runs at almost full line speed so if there is the slightest drop in speed your video will buffer.

It's still worth it. I am on the MWEB 1MB Uncapped Shaped product and I stream video just fine (was watching some Diablo3 livestreams last night on Justin.tv and had no issues).

If it's not live streamed then you can leave it to buffer or you can download it. 1mbps is not enough to stream an SD TV series, it takes around 1 hour to download a 42 minute episode. (~3 hours on 384kbps, ~15 minutes on 4mbps)

On justin.tv streaming depends a lot on the streamers settings. Some use as much as 200KBps, some as little as 70KBps for just about the same quality.

correct Loopin, a series episode downs in 15min-20min. to stream properly without buffering you have to go 4meg and nothing lower. i can even stream 720p and 1080p without any buffering.

I watch SuperSport without a hitch on 1 meg, but the quality is below SD.
