Mweb 4096 Uncapped Shaped - Rotten speeds.

Update:

Turns out the fault was with Telkom on me experiencing slow speeds and high pings. There was some problem at the exchange which has now been rectified. Everything returned back to normal.

Thanks Mweb Ops and the rest for your assistance!

good to hear, now you can download those debian files :D

point is...it never used to be like this. why did they change the shaping policies?

Well because they have your money and maybe your line already.

The more they shape, the cheaper it is for them.

You really should read the thread before posting a reply.

I have been experiencing torrent speeds of around 4kbps (up to about 10kbps depending on time of day) on my 4mb line (Ubuntu Torrent so very well seeded). Now I have got no problem with being shaped but according to Mweb Shaped "means that traffic is prioritised and channeled in a specific order, for example web browsing and email traffic will be prioritised;" What I do have a problem with is being throttled down to 1% of my line speed. Constant speeds on torrents immediately imply throttling because if it was just prioritisation then the speeds would vary because of different levels of traffic over time. I experience constant speeds that don't exceed a maximum (in my worst cases 4kb). I understand why torrents are throttled but at the same time no where in the terms is it implied that shaping extends to full blown throttling and there should be a maximum level for throttling explicitly stated in the terms. I'm sure you would agree that 99% throttling is little on the extreme side when we paying for this service, might as well be using 384kbps ADSL then. I know that many people are experiencing this, you need only look over the forum. So I ask: Please MWEB either change your shaping policy or provide transparency and explicitly state it in your terms.

Kind Regards

Hi atlas3686

I can confirm with you now that we do not throttle any of our accounts.
Please PM me your MWEB account details and I'll see if there's anything I can do for you from my side.

Regards,
MWEB Ops

I think his point was similar to mine i.e. "shaping extends to full blown throttling".
Whilst there is a technical difference, the result is very similar.

Just as a side note, there is variation over time. Normally from 6am to late evening you can expect very low speeds. I find that it starts to pick up usually about 10pm or so a little, but you get decent speeds from 1am onwards. I rarely use torrents, but I normally finish 4GB+ in a night. Been a while since I queued up larger torrents so I can't comment on the absolute limit for my line.

Hi DCBloodHound

Yes, VPN's are allowed on our network.

Just to clarify this, normal VPN activity is of course permitted, utilizing a VPN to obfuscate your P2P activities and bypass shaping is not. It is quite easy to spot the difference between the two from our point of view and this is probably the easiest way to earn yourself a warning :)
