MWeb blocking MTN VoWiFi connectivity

Mtn sim,

With metrofibre direct the wifi calling doesn't work.
With afrihost on openserve, works perfectly.

Funny thing is my clients with vodacom Fibre and Vodacom as their ISP VoWifi doesnt work for my vodacom number

Mine worked perfectly fine all day at the office over Afrihost Fibre. For me it’s just MWeb and they’re insisting they don’t block WiFi calling protocols or anything of the sort.

Not going to even bother calling MTN to try troubleshooting, their contact centre is absolutely clueless! Lol
MWeb is actually correct here. The problem isn't MWeb blocking VoWiFi, the problem is MTN choosing to whitelist certain networks and/or IP ranges that can use VoWiFi and blocking everything else.

I have 2 MTN numbers , neither will connect via VoWiFi to MTN ( no network displayed while on flight mode on my iPhone ) , my Vodacom number works without any issues

I tested the same 2 numbers on a friends Wifi network, Telkom , both numbers instantly displayed the - WiFi logo and could make and receive calls via VoWifi.

Anyone else here with a similar experience or suggestion other than moving to a different ISP
It’s not MWeb It’s the stupids at Mtn

They maintaining a strict white list of IPs that can connect to WiFi calling lest one of us saves R5 when traveling and they lose it…

Too bad they’re losing a big business customer too but hey, if you’re dumb, there’s always Vodacom and Cell C to pick up your clients.

Finally MTN has a reason to up their VoWiFi game ...

I was just recently overseas in the EU and I can confirm that MTN wifi-calling does NOT work when using wifi outside South Africa. Not a surprise really.

Works fine for me when I'm abroad, using it now actually

Please could you share the details / settings on a Samsung phone running the lastest version of OneUI how to setup hosting one sim over the second data sim for wifi calling.

I tried looking for the setting to do this on a Galaxy A53 5G, but can't seem to find it.

Thank you
Sorry for the late response.

Under settings go to SIM manager, then scroll down to see data switching and backup calls. Make sure that setting is on.

Thereafter if you fall out of signal, it should carry one sim over the mobile data of a second sim. Same as how WiFi calling would host your calls when you’re within range.

It’s because MTN are a bunch of greedy boys. Vodacom has roaming agreements with many countries now. I usually use a prepaid Vodacom eSim when I travel, R99 a GB. Other packages are 350 for 5Gb data, alternatively 550 for 5Gb and 200 minutes.

Not even worth the trouble of using those apps or Airalo? eSim etc, rate is similar and this roams straight on that countries local networks.

If I’m correct the other ‘ world sims ‘ use virtual networks so data speed etc is not as fast as being on the actual network itself, and not all of them can do voice either.

So basically it’s a set of prepaid roaming bundles with no bill shocks, surprised Vodacom actually has such a product comparing to their past habit of ripping us a new one lol!

WIFI-calling and roaming have nothing to do with each other though. WIFI-calling is completely IP-based through the internet. In theory it makes no difference whether you're sitting in Cape Town or Beijing, WIFI-calling should work exactly the same as a local call.

It might be called this on your phone. You need WiFi calling enabled on the sim you want to carry over sim one.

I normally use this when I travel, before I leave I force sim 2 onto another network by doing a manual network search and choosing another carrier.

That makes it work over the local sims data without the SA sim needing to roam. So I have my SA sim running permanently when overseas, using the data of a local sim, or a Vodacom travel bundle/ international eSim depending on what’s the cheapest option in that country.
