MWEB CEO explains their Uncapped ADSL Acceptable Use Policy

I am downloading between 700 and 800 gigabyte every month and have not had 1 single problem with mweb. I have an apple tv with an itunes store account and HD Movies and HD tv series are big downloads, but I get full download speed all the time
 
must agree with a previous poster that the title of this article is misleading; MWeb most certainly did not clarify HOW they are imposing their policies (often important) and were careful to tiptoe around equivocally defining 'abuse'
 
I think MWeb's product is great for the price and it suits my needs perfectly (moderate downloading off news servers, lots of downloading off steam and local gaming). If you don't want a shaped solution, why are you buying a shaped solution and then complaining that its shaped?

It's shaped uncapped ffs. It does what it says on the box.
 
Shaped Uncapped vs dedicated line...it seems some people think it should be the same experience.
 
Well whether this will quell the compaints is yet to be seen. Even though Afrihost has discontinued their 384 All In One, I still use the service. So I don't get throttled although my speeds have recently dropped whether it is due to the Seacom problem or something else.

Who is the police / government to decide what I am using my car for, I should be allowed to drive at 160km/hour with 200KG's of heroin in my car, I pay my taxes and they supply my the road.
 
I bet half the people that moan about the policy or shaping are not even subscribers!

I have been an Mweb subscriber for several months now and I have to say for the price I am pretty happy so far. I have hit as high as 600Gb's in one month, but my usage is slowly starting to taper off now, as I have finished downloading the Internet Mwwaahahahahaha!!!!

So where are they lying????
PS all the other ISP's do it....but they add throttling in as well.

if you want 300 GB get mweb
if you want 900GB get Axxess

You can do 1TB per month on MWEB. However, it has to be legit protocols - if you are using HTTP downloads (not stuff like RapidShare) and uploads, and/or FTP and or video conferencing or VPN'ng large files across your WAN MWEB will work. It will be legitimate use. MWEB shapes their P2P and most one click hosts very heavily but other stuff works throughout the day.

I think MWEB has more of a problem with 1000s of people doing 400GB/mo each on P2P/one click hosts than a few people using the internet on FTP/VPN/etc traffic - such as uploading video to your websites and downloading other peoples' video etc (not copyright stuff).

Driving fast is illegal because it is unsafe.
Heroin possession is illegal whether you have it on your private yacht in SA territorial waters or your car.

I agree that MWEB should not concern itself too much with users internet traffic though.
 
In the end I pay R500 and I get 300GB - I am very happy and if my P2P or hotfile.com download sometimes go as low as 5kb/s then so be it. For R500 per month I really do not expect much more than what I get on MWeb at the moment.

you lucky you get that speed, mine is constatntly at an average of 45kbs on a 4 meg line

I bet you would also agree that if I commited fraud on your bank account, your bank should not concern itself too much with it's users money ?

Edit : and committing piracy is illegal, just like driving fast and possession of heroin.

That's not the same. The bank is or should be responsible for making sure someone else does not access my money. However, if I give my password and details to someone else, it's not the bank's problem. The bank should make sure it's website is hacker proof and they provide a dongle key generator or cell phone code to help prevent fraud (optionally). How I spend my money however, is not the bank's business.

No. Copyright infringement for personal use does not fall under criminal law. It falls under civil law. Please educate yourself about the differences. The Copyright holder has to prove someone is using his work without permission and sue in a civil court. If someone is breaching copyright in terms of criminal law - eg re-selling copyrighted works - the copyright holder still has to notify the police of this as someone has to have copyright to point out that the other person is reselling copyrighted goods.

Many people get that idea. However, it's bollocks. It's entirely possible to be an amateur video producer and consume 1TB/mo easily by uploading and downloading video etc.
Amateur photographers, editors, colorists, graphic designers who upload/download RAW photographs etc.

I said "amateur" because professional video producers/photographers should be on MWEB's Business Package.

Although MWEB's residential product is called a "SOHO" products so small businesses should be permitted to use it, eg small time professional photographers or video producers or music producers.

My Sony PWM-EX1 churns out 1080p30 video at 35Mb/sec and about an hour of video is 15GB.
