MWEB Gaming Feedback

Sure thing Lounger always happy to clarify and this is quite simply a light hearted take on the subject on my part.
.........
So when I refer to p2p bullies I'm referring to the aggressive nature of bitorrent and other mass TCP connection "swarming" protocols and their tendency to try and fill all the available space, rather than the user groups who partake in p2p related activities.

I trust this clears things up for you.

Just say it Will@, P2P is not well received by ISP's but still use it as an carrot to get subscribers! :)

Sillicur those speeds are what I would consider to be in normal ranges for NNTP traffic on a 384k account, NNTP is not a priority service and will experience slower speeds during peak times.

I'd really prefer it if we could discuss the services without resorting to foul language, I'm sure the mybb admins would concur.

Thanks

Will

So a few questions then

Why did it change, cause it was full speed any time of the day till last week?
Something must have changed right?
Will it get back to the speeds i saw from the time i signed up till last week or is this here to stay?

Should you guys not call your uncapped 384 service "uncapped 56k on p2p, uncapped 128k on NTTP, uncapped 384k on HTTP and gaming" then? Instead of uncapped 384. False advertising is false.

I understand that resorting to foul language is a bit childish and i guess i shouldnt do it.
Do you understand that constant issues with games + the fact that now it seems you cant even download anymore on such a low package anyway is pretty bad. South Africans are already paying insanely high prices for sub par service, outages and horrible line speeds (which i know is telkom's fault)

Basically it feels that we are getting shafted in every aspect of internet. Wouldnt you agree?

Lets sum up: For almost a year now i have been getting full speeds, for a week now im on isdn speed. So i wouldnt consider that normal ranges for NNTP traffic.

Well I don't think it's a question of saying it's not well received, or that it would be treated as draw card. P2P traffic is a fact of life which every ISP who manages their own network must deal with whether they sell capped, or uncapped products, or a combination of the two.

The challenge centers around doing your best to service the needs of a subset of your customers, without compromising the overall experience of the larger user base.

I'd like to think that we have come a long way down this road in the last year and a bit since launching our own network. Both in terms of providing the necessary levels of assurance for sensitive real time protocols such as gaming and streamed media and in terms of trying to provide a reasonable and balanced slice of the pie to those users who's preference leans more towards heavy p2p usage.

We don't favor one set of users over another and as I said often these needs coexist within the same customer, but purely from a network management point of view it's important to understand that each type of traffic requires a unique approach in order to provide the appropriate level of service.

I think the team are ironing out some kinks with the new upstream traffic manager in London, which possibly could have caused this.

So THATS why I had latencies in the 1000k range on Wow last night.... And that was when testing out 10man raids. Still have to use BattlePing to get sub 300ms home and world latencies. Did a couple of 10man runs the previous week, and it was quite successful. No DC whatsoever. Green PC icon latency. Also, last night (during the aforementioned lag) my latency would seem "jumpy" at times, but overall it was on the ****ty side. Will let you know how it goes tonight (Nefarian 10man...)

One more thing, while Im here. There is a new 'Optimize Network for Speed' option under Options > Network. From what I can judge by the description, is that if you have a "almost-broadband" line, or in my case, a 384k line and service, then you should disable that option. Can anyone confirm this?

Honestly nothing I'm aware of that should have had a significant impact on this service has changed. We have had customers raise concerns about the news service in the past and our engineers have done their best to provide a reasonable experience accessing the MWEB news server, bearing in mind that this is a free value add service which we make available to our customers and that maintaining a Usenet feed with full binary access requires a significant commitment of resources.

Regarding the advertising of the service, we don't make any distinctions regarding speeds on different protocols, however the service is clearly advertised as shaped which means that you can expect that traffic which is not given priority will not run at line speeds on a constant basis. If you require full speed P2P type activities (which includes NNTP) then you need to consider moving to an unshaped product.

Definitely off on 384k BeanBag. If I read the Blizzard write up correctly it is primarily intended to lower latency in instances and will cause DC's for users with lower connection speeds.

Hey Will, me again. :p

Since I made those changes I've been having good speeds. I'm using the WTFast account as well though. I left the Optimize for speed setting enabled. Haven't done any raids bar Ulduar chiefmince runs, but I have joined couple BG's and all went smooth. Will post the other settings I changed in a minute. :)

ps. I just tried and tried things and so far all is well. :p :o

Hey Will

I got a reply from the mweb gamesmaster about the WTFast free account but when i tried to add the subscription i got the error : This key is not active or has already been used.

Has the deal now run out since it was only for the first 500 member.

I don't think so Bar Rat - I'll check with him in the morning.

One more thing... Ive decided to use BattlePing instead of WTFast (I can get into the game faster with BattlePing...) Ive noticed that the ping to the London proxy has gone up from 179ms to about 230ms. Does this means that the traffic shaper that Mweb has added to the London up-link is still in a process of working all the kinks out? Also, I take it that since BattlePing uses SSH to tunnel the traffic, that it also gets a high priority on Mweb's shapers? Was just wondering...

Guys and Gals just to make you aware I just posted in the subscriber feedback thread. There seem to be some fairly widespread speed related complaints today, possibly extending to other ISPS as well based on the comment trends here today. We haven't been able to isolate a cause for this yet and nothing has been reported to us by any of our connectivity partners, but we are looking into this urgently and will update you as soon as we know more.

I beleive that SSH should fall into the 'realtime' class, which is high priority, but I'll confirm this for you tomorrow. It's my understanding that there is still some optimization that will happen on the new traffic manager along with some other related tasks that need to be completed that should be taking place over the course of this week.

Could this be why the news server speeds are horrible as well? Cause even with a paid news server from an international site the speed is still crawling.
On a (lets called it third party forums) there has also been a string of complaints about mweb speeds.

Hopefully this could be the issue. Im sitting at 18kb/s now, going up slowly like last night.

I'm getting 0 speed on news servers. Latency in games has been really bad the past week on mweb. Pretty sure the blame lies with this new "bandwidth managing device". Enough is enough if this does not improve by tomorrow I'm canceling my mweb.

Most of the complaints I saw today related to browsing and youtube speeds and I still have no confirmation that those issues were isolated to MWEB customers - as I said they seemed to be quite widespread. I'll look into this tomorrow and let you know if we pick up anything specific. We are having a stability problem with a London side traffic manager which is being attended to urgently, however I have no confirmation that this is linked in any way to the speed problems experienced today. This should also not have any impact on locally cached news.

@Rohan I fully understand your frustration, but please try to hang in there a little longer. I'm sure this will all be sorted out very soon.

Hi Will,

it has been a terrible experience playing wow lately. Tonight I did a BOT raid...and dc'ed on the first try. My latencies were +/- 350ms, which is usually ok. After 3 dc's I decided to use my backup account, and all was 100%, latency of 200ms, and no more dc's.

It was really good for months, never had to use my backup account from beginning of the year.

Hi Tom. We are experiencing a problem with some London based equipment which should be resolved today, however I do not have any confirmation that this is directly linked to the speed complaints that have been coming in since yesterday. Our engineers are looking into all possible causes for this and we're also trying to establish if any of our connectivity partners are experiencing any issues that we are not aware of. I'm confident that, whatever the cause, that we will get to the bottom of this very soon and get everything back to normal.

Thanks for your patience.
Will
