Mweb Local Uncapped Trial

I personally would wait and see what happens in April before id register for an account. I recall local torrents back in the days when telkom had local uncapped and Axxess had 10gig int accounts

Why 10 April? According to the article on the MyAdsl homepage the messages users were receiving was an 'error'. Whether or not they were actually considering cancelling the local is irrelevant as they have now said that free local is here to stay.

"MWEB said that the situation was created by an internal error and that there is no change to the current uncapped local service.

“Unfortunately it was an internal error at MWEB that resulted in you receiving this information yesterday. Currently there is no change to MWEB’s local-only product and MWEB continues to supply the uncapped local bandwidth service on its ADSL products,” MWEB said."
Why does my account still say "You have used XX GB of 10 GB Local Only Cap"?

As far as I'm concerned the writing is on the wall and if I'm wrong then so what? Rescinding my cancellation is but a phone call away. ;)

I don't really have a choice, as my telkom line installation will take betwen 14-21 days, so can only get ADSL after that, and by that time, will see if Mweb cancel their local deal. I don't see it happening though, as too many customers will cancel their accounts and move to other ISPs.

Mweb are only doing what they're legally bound to do (they're interpreting the laws the right way :)

@Bwana, I'd do the same thing if I was you, you've basically got a fail safe, but perhaps they just haven't updated their systems? Go over your limit and see if you get capped :)

Some people were capped and that is what started the furore.

This is mweb - if they wanted it changed it would have been changed thats why I consider the writing to be on the wall. Its not if they're going to do it, as far as I'm concerned its when.

I'm sure for every 1 SAIX leecher there are over 100 that use next to nothing of their account. This balances things out, but as usual the South African business mentality wants to squeeze every last cent out of us and offer the crappest service possible

Ye,s they have said that the total number of ADSL users do not actually utilise their given local portion so those who are using the service heavily do not actually cause them to incur any extra costs. They have not lost any money on the deal... in fact I would venture to say they got a lot of business because of it. It was the threat of all that new business canceling their accounts that caused them to backtrack. :)

@Gary, and let's hope they have backtracked :) hopefully other ISPs will follow their lead!

I missed that article - do you have a link?

That article doesn't actually mention the usage ratio between clients, I think it was from an email that mweb sent one of the clients and posted earlier in this forum.

Dear XXXXXX

Thank you for your e-mail.

The trial period for the uncap local bandwidth is over. MWEB provided
uncapped local-only access on a trial basis in 2008, during which time
we absorbed the cost of all the additional local-only data usage we
provided. Our records show that the vast majority of customers consume
less local-only data than the local-only usage limits that will apply to
their particular ADSL products.

Although the trial period is over, we will provide usage limits for the
local-only data added onto our blended ADSL products. For example, 1GB
will get 10GB local.

Should you exhaust your Local only cap, the account will be hard capped
until the beginning of the following month and no cost should incur. You
can purchase a 1GB booster but no local bandwidth offering have been
presented yet.

Please contact us should you require any further technical assistance.

Kind Regards

I just phoned Mweb and they say that local has been cancelled, 10gb with a 1gb account etc, will apply from now on. WTF?? Is this is a case of not informing their call centre people or is the article on myadsl just playing with words as they don't actually say that they're cancelling free local, they just say that they're not changing anything, and that, loosely interpreted could mean that thye've ended their local 'trial', so nothing is changed, the trial is just over.

Thanks - but to be fair that email also claims that the trial period is over.

That e-mail was sent the day before M-web backtracked. Since they published the MyBB article nobody has been capped. At least nobody I have heard of. There were those few who were capped the day before they backtracked, but they were restored after a phone call. I have not been capped so far this month. and I have already gone over my allotment.

My understanding is that M-web threatened to cap the users, or somehow activated some capping software that was on trial or on standby. When they realised the negative response they backtracked 24 hours later and as it stands now they do not intend on ending the trial or on capping anybody.

Then perhaps they should inform their call centre agents, as I spoke to Gidaaya less than an hour ago and he said that there was no more free local. Once again, no confirmation of anything, lots of miscommunication, gotta love SA :)

Either way, I'm gonna try Mweb out, if it doesn't work, I'll just change ISPs.

Yet they just informed Silver82 directly that the trial was over.
Or they didn't do a good job of investigative journalism, which means how many other articles are misinforming readers?
I've got every faith in the reporting - there's nothing anyone can do if the PR department dishes out misinformation. It still hasnt been shown conclusively what is actually happening.
Either way, I'm gonna try Mweb out, if it doesn't work, I'll just change ISPs.
Go for it - just beware there is a 30 notice period.
