MWEB - Message from CEO - Acceptable Use Policy

So no one agrees with me?

Actually I agree with you fully :)

Why not have an "Uncapped Browser" and "Uncapped Downloader" offer? Im not talking about the unshaped uncapped option, but rather spit the Uncapped, shaped options in 2

Because it won't stop people on the "Uncapped Browser" using http to bypass shaping. Which is the whole point of this thread.

no. that is the last thing we need is more "innovative" products to confuse the end user and create a setup to abuse the end user.

Which is why MWEB needs some sort of similar package to openweb's GOLD account.

I Sigh at 90% of people here...

I have a fever, headache, haven't eaten for days and can't even walk right now but I still retain my ability to think, which is more than I can say for some.

Although I'll apologize now for spelling and grammatical errors.

Let me start by helping most of you understand the word "Uncapped".

Uncapped does not necessarily mean "unlimited" it means there is no distinct point at which a hard 'cap' or 'limit' is placed upon a service (the service obviously being Internet/ADSL) however just because there is no hard cap does not mean that other limiters cannot be put in place, such as shaping, throttling and AUPs.

For all of you that think UNCAPPED means "Use all you like and go mad because its your birthday boooya I'm going to rape this connection" then perhaps you are not required in the gene pool. NOTE that I am not referring to leechers, I am however referring to people who complain about the existence of an AUP (including forms of shaping and throttling, one however should take this with reason in hand) , their argument being "But its UNCAPPED! I WANT I WANT!! WHAAAA! By my definition UNCAPPED is all and everything I can use! WAA!".

Right, just to clear up whats left of 'Uncapped - The Definition':

Lets all take a neutral stance here, lets take a step back, drop all bias and observe with an open mind.

How Does an ISP get its bandwidth? Well, they have to get both international and local access, both come at a hefty price (this is the case in South Africa).

So ISPs have a FINITE amount of bandwidth at any given time? Yes, they do. And sadly because of the current prices in South Africa its not easy for them to secure too much, in relation to their customer base of course.

What does the FINITE amount of bandwidth imply? Good question! Basically everything you can find in this world will have some implication or another in this case a FINITE amount of bandwidth means that they can't possibly ever (in fact it will never be possible, ever) provide limitless download/upload speeds as for obvious reasons.

I Understand that there is no such thing as INFINITE bandwidth but can't they secure enough, so everyone is kept happy? No, not at these prices, not now. Perhaps if they charged a few thousand for a basic package they could but it would cost too much and no one would be interested in the product.

Alright, Alright. So how the hell does an ISP balance the load if they can't secure exactly as much bandwidth as they sell, tell me that!! Well, they use shaping, throttling and contention ratios. Shaping is giving a lower priority to a specific protocol on the network, most ISPs shape P2P thereby giving it a low priority on the network so people who use the internet for things like browsing are not affected. Throttling is limiting the speed of the actual connection such as a 4mb/s connection down to 1mb/s. The last, which ALL ISPs use is contention ratios.

Whats a contention ratio? ISPs use contention ratios to make money, without them they would make a loss and you would not have internet. say an SP has a 1GB/s pipe if they sell exactly the amount of bandwidth that they have for the average cost of an ADSL account then they would not have a third of what its costing them, in this case. So you can see that they are running on a loss, so instead of selling 1GB/s they sell 5GB/s and they start making money. This is where AUPs come in, because you SHARE a connection with people you have to act responsibly in order to avoid affecting the other users in a negative way.

__

I'll have to end this here, my fever is picking up.

Whats Happening is people are abusing the service, they are affecting others and breaching the AUPs, if you don't like it, don't buy it.

+1

Very well put.

Having worked in the ISP field for many years, I have learned a few things about users. As a rule of wrist, users are wrong, foolish, ignorant, ungrateful, unaccommodating. They are practically untermensh - unless proven otherwise. The ones proving otherwise, are an absolute joy to work with. These are the users support techs will bend over backwards for with a smile and the accounts people will gladly refund. They will enjoy having been gone the extra mile for.

Every single ISP in the WORLD states in their T&C that they may do WHATEVER they want WHENEVER they want without informing you. So mweb/afrihost/axxess changing AUP and letting you know, is not your right, but a favour they are doing you. They don't have to let you know of any changes in their T&C, throttling, shaping etc, because you AGREED that they can do what they want.

(Remember that little box you have to tick before being able to click submit on their site? Yup - that's where you agreed.)

It is simple people. If you want unlimited, guaranteed full throughput; you don't call MWEB/Afrihost/wtfever. You phone 10217 and get yourself a leased line; so you may have your 1:1 contended, unlimited bandwidth guaranteed with an SLA or STFU and GTFO.

It is that simple.

While I agree with you sentiment that those who want the more redundant , guaranteed bandwidth should pay for it, a leased line is generally point to point, not a point to ISP or tunnel.

Indeed not generally, but depending on the scope of the service, it can be done with a provider whom will be your internet gateway. Nasty bill though...

Hey I have an idea.
If you're an ISP that promises unlimited, uncapped, internet access... provide it without bitching or STFU and GTFO.

Now that we're on a level playfield... YOU can go ahead and STFU and GTFO.
*******.

Mweb as far as I understand, secured 30 gigs of saix bandwidth for every user. This was put into effect by changing your login to mweb and removing the adsl part. If you have now been asked to change back then I think you've used up your 30 and are going to go back onto mwebs alternate links and remember seacom is still down.

no one has ever told me to change anything from day 1

Ha MWEB since I can't even Youtube correctly (for the last couple of months actually) I have now finally given you my cancellation notice. Whooo whooo

And i have just done the same, as i cannot accept a nzb coming down at max 34kbs on a 4 meg line. Expected more from mweb since i been a client foe over 6 years, and yes a used to get full speed on my nzb's when i first got the 4 meg when speaking to a techie at mweb i was told i was not gauranteed full speeds as they shape.....please i ask you 24/7 what utter rubbish.

Industry does not do it that way, or at least no enterprise I'm familiar with. Leased lines are used as extensions to WANS. If a business requires the uptime and guarantee, they normally just go for a high end adsl account. If you really need high spec net access, it's cheaper to host a server in a nok somewhere and have a dedicated link to it while the server sits on a backbone. But we're straying from the topic at hand :p

No. They count the SAIX usage AND the MWeb usage, even if you only used 5gig of SAIX. They will nag you after 20gig, not 30.

I think MWeb are trotting a very fine line with the bypassing of protocols thing.
Just my opinion... hear me out.

What about those services that specifically offer tunneling into their servers to obtain a higher download rate on your shaped connection.
These services were born and only offer what they do, due to shaping policies.
If MWeb specifically prohibits their users from using such services, those companies could very well make a case that MWeb is being anti-competitive (you get what I'm saying).

Wouldn't that be like Telkom saying: "You can only use your analogue phone line and ADSL account with Telkom's ISP offering. Any other ISP's offering is not allowed over our lines"

I know its a world apart and all that, but it boils to the same thing.
Everything else I can understand, MWeb.
Not allowed to "re-sell" or "share" your account with neighbours etc.
Not allowed to this or that.

But not allowing such tunneling services -aka: bypassing shaping- directly affects those companies' ability to provide their services.

They are on record as forbidding VPN tunneling.

so from D/L at average 350kbs, i am now at 45kbs. Seriously guys we the consumer pay good money for a service at least provide it. I really expect more speed from a 4 meg line. I really do not care you thinks this is just moaning, but people in South Africa has always just accepted what is thrown at them, and i am not only talking about mweb.

..well I really can't bash Mweb, some j@ck@ss stole 1km of the Telkom copper wires to my farm and apparently they are out of stock in Cape Town. Police told me their number 1 suspects are X Telkom workers.

.. figures, I suppose..
