MWEB reduces uncapped ADSL prices

Thanks MWEB, aaarrrrgghh have to wait till end of May to get onto my 4Mb Uncapped Mweb account, as I have to give WA once months notice ...
Total cost: 899+181(line rental)-899(allowance)=181.... not too shabby eh

Price reductions are always welcome. Huge drop on the 1mbps uncapped data. Would have been nice if the 4mbps guys also got a small drop like around R50 just to keep them happy. They are getting a raw deal since with more people signing up for 1mbps lines there will likely be congestion problems (if not on Mwebs data side, then the Telkom exchange they're linked to) which will make the 4mbps experience worse whilst still paying the same amount.

I didn't read through this entire thread so dunno if it was answered before.
My total monthly bill is R349 to Mweb (uncapped data + Line)
How will this new pricing affect me?

Hi silkman

The new price for the 384 All Inclusive will be R329 p/m.

In order to benefit from the 1Mbps speed, you need to upgrade to 1Mbps line speed. The same would apply to 384 All Inclusive customers.

Seriously? Lets do a bit of stats ..

1) Telkom drop is 30% accross the board.
2) ISP's claim that IPC is the biggest portion of their monthly expence.

Did you notice how will@MWEB's already backtracking on that statement in his post?

3) MWEB therefore gets 30% cut of their biggest cost (accross the board & without lifting a finger) and all they can manage is a reduction of 1mbps by 33%, 1mbps business by 18% and 384 by 9%? In other words their three lowest-end products gets a avg/combined reduction of 20%.

How big a portion of their total range are those three products do you think? Did you even think that MWEB will be pocketing the 30% reduction on every single one of their other products, and you're ecstatic over nothing but a vague promise of an 'enhanced network'. Amazing, you guys have very short memories and you will never learn.

I repeat, despite your objections you're a pushover that love being screwed. You will continue to bend over until you learn what it means to use your collective power as consumers to fight back against being overcharged.

Might as well go out and buy those e-tags, Treasury did say that it makes economic sense after all!

Why all the aggression to a nice price reduction? If the IPC cost is 60% of the cost anything close to 20% on the retail price is pretty damn good, 33% on the 1Mbps is great! The 384 has been upgraded to a 1Mbps connection, so you cannot really talk about the 9% as you are getting 2.5x the speed for a lower price.

I do 80GB easily a month on my 1Mbps line and that is without even trying, so I can't fault MWEB service. I can understand how they don't reduce the 4 and 10Mbps lines as those are generally VERY heavy users using hundreds of GB per month.

How many ISPs are their that are offering what they are with competing quality? Afrihost are not too far off, who else? WA have their rolling windows, RSAWeb also use IS, so would expect pretty heavy shaping/throttling there too. Openweb seems to provide varied response, but on the equivalent price they are not really in the same league.

evilstebunny, your evil LOL :D
But on a serious note you have will@MWEB in a corner here. why are we not getting less 30% on the R413 that is supposed to be for the IPC costs. I accept Mweb's R539 for the data portion, but why do the 384k, 1meg and business account users get reduction. this too me is just total greed. Mweb is doing a Nasper/Monochoice on us here since they part of the GREEDY BUNCH. we should get a R120 discount, which means we should be able to only pay about R290 for the IPc costs which Mweb pays to Telkom. so all in all we should actually pay in the region of R830 instead of R899. So i cannot see why Mweb does not reduce the cost to that amount which is only a reduction of R70. shame on you Mweb.

The other point i want to raise is why do we have to be penalised for the speed of the line. i understand that some people rape the system, but why don't you impliment a system where you throttle users during the day time and let not throttle and shape people from 6pm or 7pm until 6am the morning.

One question, what happens when the 1meg to 2 meg line speed upgrade comes?
Will there be a new price for 2 meg, or will 1 meg users be upgraded at R 199?????

Apologies if this has already been asked, haven't had time to read the thread yet.

Thanks..so what would the upgrade cost me?

Well done mweb once again, market leaders and once again the only company actuall helping the consumer.

Just one thing, what about 4mb?

Nothing for 4mb users? Guess we have to carry the rest. :(

I think it's being done in preparation for the upcoming line speed upgrades, that is why 384 and 1 meg are now the same price. I'm guessing that 2 meg will be the same price that 1 meg used to be.

Geesh ... everyone is asking the same questions over & over & over, but no-one is willing to read the whole thread in its entire.

you mean will@MWeb is bypassing all our relevant questions which he clearly cannot answer.
I think he needs to ask his MD Derek Hershaw that question so we can get a more realistic answer.

Hi evilstebunny

Firstly, the 30% savings is only on the IPC cost component and although it makes up a significant portion of our input costs, it is not the only cost factor.

That said, we have split the IPC savings two ways. We’ll be using part of the savings to continue enhancing our Tier 1 network, thereby benefitting all MWEB ADSL customers. The balance is being used to make 1Mbps uncapped ADSL the “best internet deal in South Africa” by dropping the price on that product by R100, to just R199 per month. That’s why you won’t see a straight 30% reduction on all our pricing across the board.

Why all the aggression to a nice price reduction?

What price reduction? :D

I'm not even with MWEB and it irks me that they not passing any savings through to the 4meg guys. I get that they plan to upgrade their network, its appreciated, but seriously nothing, NOTHING?! for 4mbps given the HUGE reduction in IPC?

Point I was really trying to make is that nothing witll ever change if you just accept whatever's being said like sheep.

I strongly deny being in any corners with evil bunnies :D

Can I just clarify again that IPC costs, do not equate to line rental costs in any way. Line rental is what you pay Telkom for your ADSL copper line that connects you to the exchange. In the case of an All Inclusive account its the portion of your subscription which is the wholesale line rental cost that we charge which is payed on to Telkom.

IPC links are high capacity links (multiple gigabits) that connect our network to Telkom's so that we can effectively reach our ADSL customers. Having sufficient IPC capacity is critical to being able to provide a world class service and yes a saving in these costs is significant for us, but it is not a reduction in wholesale ADSL line rental costs which is how some of you seem to have interpreted this.

Also in all fairness evilstebunny you left out the change with the most impact, which is that we no longer offer a 384k data only product and that all of our 384k data only customers will automatically be upgraded to 1MB while paying R20 less per month from the 1st of June.

In all honesty I hear what you guys are saying and I understand as a 4mb customer that you must be feeling a bit left out of the party, but you genuinely are on great pricing so you're already at the party :)

We really feel that it's high time people stopped calling 384k broadband in South Africa and made some bold moves to shuffle it out of the market place, which is the primary objective of what we're doing here.

Down with 384k! Or in this case up with it - to 1mb :D

Man there is a lot of whining on this thread. If you think Mweb is being unfair to the 4 Meg guys then feel free to move to a cheaper competitor.

I for one think this will be an exceptional leap forward for adsl in this country. For a long time we have needed to bring up the bottom end and this is exactly what Mweb has enabled.

What price reduction? :D

Considering what MWEB having been doing don't you think it is fair to give them a little leeway on a statement like them saying they are buying more IPC and international capacity?

@ MWEB Guy

I just called your Sales and Client Services Dept querying about costs for the little guy below 1MB and according them the price cut is for the peeps on 1MB and up only? They say that the <1MB users may - used loosely - enjoy reductions beginning 01-Jun-12 but he is not going to confirm and/or commit to this statement?

I think it unfair that someone on a 384k uncapped service(R220pm) pays more than someone on 1MB(R199pm)? Yes, its only 30 bucks but hey...its still R30?

Telkom CANNOT and WILL not commit as to when ALL peeps under 1MB will be auto-upgraded to 1MB as its dependant on availability and exchange compatibility? So until such time as the upgrade is completed, I will still be paying R220? If the MWEB account is upped to 1MB, can it still be used on a 384k line speed?

So...what say you MWEB Guy?

@ The Forum...Yes, Yes I know..should've upped to 512k or 1MB but we had probs where line was unstable.

Now...Telkom has now announced any reduction in rental rates? Anyone seen it anywhere ...or I am being greedy?

Thanks in advance for feedback

Great news for SA moving toward affordable "broadband"

The thing I probably miss least from SA since living in Israel is the price of broadband....

a 30meg line with uncapped data here costs about R300 depending on the exchange rate, it is also much less shaped there is some shaping but not as bad as in SA.

entry level internet is a 12meg line uncapped and costs about R220 at the top end is 100meg which will be around R500

Even 3G uncapped (60gig fair use) will cost you about R250

So "Kola kavod" well done in Hebrew to Mweb but come one get it to 12meg before I come back haha...

EDIT . . . .

I am sure there are many reasons that it is unfair to compare the 2 but it is still such a massive difference hoping SA will enjoy real internet soon ;)

Problem is Will, we've heard this all before. ISP's first used the expensive international portion of our broadband over a single cable as the standard excuse why we used to pay so much. Then Seacom came and suddenly 'there were other factors like national distribution costs' etc. as the reason why we didn't get to share in the savings. Sorry that's bull****.

I see the same thing here, you get a 30% saving, yet you pass a few peanuts on to us (your users, I'm not one tho I was considering to move to 4mbps MWEB just not at the old price). To be honest, nobody expected a straight 30% reduction, we like that you upgraded the 384 users, also we fully expected you'd to want to use a portion to upgrade your network, but seriously no reduction on 4mpbs at all?

Just sounds a bit off given the 30% accross the board reduction on your biggest cost you got.
