I'm sorry, that's no excuse.

The users didn't set the pricing in the first place -- MWeb did that all on their own.

I still feel they should be able to provide some kind of contingency routing, perhaps at degraded speeds at the kind of price they're charging. R500 per month for some kind international access isn't exactly cheap, I'm not asking for the full 4Mbps during fail over here, but there should be some kind of fail over nonetheless.
 
We might not have international, but we do have each other!! Wait, each other isn't better than international!! :wtf:

MWeb is working on it.
 
It would be great if they would "unlock" their modems to allow us to use an alternative provider if they're not going to have a backup...
 
Lets start with the facts:
- Seacom is one of the Submarine fiber cables that connect South Africa to Europe.
- There are other ways out of South Africa to Europe, that do not rely on Seacom.
- Residential ADSL users are quite far down the list of priorities for most ISP’s.
- Business users on leased lines account for significantly more income than ADSL users.

You get what you pay for.

Your choice of ISP should take all of these facts into account:
- Does your ISP have multiple international circuits?
- Are these circuits physically diverse (ie: not the same cable).
- Are you actually paying for a service that will make use of the backup circuits in the event of a failure?

Chances are, unless you have a leased line service, and you pay something in the region of R20000 a month for it, you will be affected by the Seacom problems.

It would be incredibly naive of any ISP to expect that a single upstream provider will be up 100% of the time. Seacom do not promise a 100% uptime, so how can you expect that level of service if you rely solely on them?

The solution for ISPs? Use one of those other forms of international connectivity. Such as the SAT3-SAFE cable. Sure, thats expensive, so only use that for your “premium” customers. Like those guys paying R20000+ a month for their leased lines. They’ll get what they pay for.

And that there, is the difference between the R900 you pay a month for 4mbit ADSL, and R20000 per month for 4mbit leased line.

You get what you pay for.

True, but MWeb is not the only supplier. There are other ISP's with uncapped services that have redundant links through SAT3 as well as SEACOM, but they charge more.

If you want the redundancy then use them. There are links all over this forum for them...
 
Still have no international :( did the whole reset vibe - still nothing.

Uhm its easy to say you get what you pay for but that doesint mean that you must disgard your client base, at the end of the day a client is a client doesint matter how small or how big they are.

And I refuse to pay the full amount for internet which I was barely able to use.
 
I am using my WebAfrica prepaid at the moment. Hope Mweb uncapped will be back up soon (at least international browsing).

I was about to get a prepaid SAIX package so I get access to my website in Europe again - Will it work with an MWeb edition billion 7401 modem or it is locked to MWeb only?
 
SO thats what happened. Thought the radius server was screwballed giving out SAIX IP's on mweb accounts.

I see Mweb are hi-jacking P25 for smtp.saix.net so I'll just leave it on saix so it will work nomatter what ip we asigned.

mine is locked...got myself another one to use WA prepaid :D
