So far for the past few days I've been using Vox with their new capped special, and besides a few issues with ping in the early evening with dota2, im actually seeing what unshaped internet feels like *most* of the time, and not at times when im asleep. Now i get with an uncapped account there needs to be some shaping in place, but there is no doubt in my mind that there is some overbearing shaping on the mweb network, with streaming or just in general.

The way my internet has been the past few days with Vox has proven to me that my concerns for it being exchange congestion were most likely mistaken, since I've not experienced anything as terrible as a 10kbs connection to YouTube at 1pm, which is how it was everyday eith mweb. I've been with mweb for ages, and I'll just downgrade to a 1gig capped account to keep an account with them, but there is no way in hell i actually feel good about paying for a 1mb premium connection for something that seems quite inferior at the moment. Know this: so many people are unhappy with the service, and it seems to be a common issue across network and package types: terrible shaping.

Afternoon Pansyfaust, there are differences in the shaping.

The capped package is an unshaped package, while the 1Mbps package with MWEB is shaped.

Also note that the line is syncing at 2Mbps, which means that you are obtaining 2Mbps speeds with the capped package and 1Mbps speeds with the MWEB shaped package.

These differences will impact on your experience.

Please note that I know the differences and am well aware that the 1MB premium account is an uncapped shaped account.

Also know that I've been a customer with Mweb for about 3 or so years and in that time there has never been a point where I thought the experience of my internet was bad...except for the past 2 or so months. Even though I could have gotten 2MB uncapped accounts with other ISPs, I chose to stay on the 1MB premium mweb account since I valued the consistent and knowable nature of my internet--I did not want to be an angry Afrihost customer in the Afrihost thread or a dissatisfied Open Web customer. I was perfectly fine paying the same price other ISPs charged for their 2MB uncapped package, while getting a 1MB premium account that was shaped fairly--i.e p2p during day is mostly shaped, and most other traffic working at regular/just below regular speeds.

I can without a doubt say that the past 2 months I have experienced a general frustration using the mweb network--loading of webpages takes longer, accessing my gmail involves a few refreshes etc. Most tellingly, my streaming was being affected. Soundcloud and YouTube for example crawled during the day whereas a few months ago they were absolutely fine. The only time this past month where I've been able to enjoy a Youtube video or Podcast without waiting for it to buffer was in the late evening. To put it in words that can be understood by all: I was not getting 1MB/s speeds on regular types of traffic at times where I was mostly awake (Gmail/Youtube/Facebook) etc.

So yes, there are indeed differences between a capped account and an uncapped account. But before any of this, the only thing I could compare in my mind were the two experiences I had of Mweb, that being a fairly shaped premium uncapped account I was blissfully using a few months ago, to this devolved, unusable and expensive overly shaped product which offered a horrible experience for using the internet in any modernly meaningful way. These are the differences that should actually matter, not the one between an Mweb uncapped account and another ISPs capped account.

If anything, I got this Vox account to determine once and for all if my telkom exchange was congested, and I'm fairly certain that it is not since my speeds during most hours are splendid, whereas Mweb was horrible most times and only splendid at some points in the evening.

To that end, I still won't totally leave Mweb since I will wait for whatever issue is plaguing the network/ceo's mind top rectify. Until then, my patronage will be downgraded into a 1GB capped product with Mweb.

I understand your sentiment Pansyfaust and your concerns have certainly been noted.

We also appreciate the loyalty you've shown and hopefully we can repay that in the near future.

Whats happening with Google Play/Gmail etc. Are they being throttled too?Play store App downloads are about 19kb/s, can't even login to gmail since it says there's a network connection problem, via the app. It's not my line since trial accounts are giving 5x the speed minimum. Neither is it Google's servers since with LTE downloads are in the mb/s. I mweb get throttling p2p, ftp etc. but play store downloads wtf?

MWEB Guy, perhaps you know the answer to this (MWEB Business). Is it true that email usernames have to be longer than 3 characters?

i.e. xyz@abcd.co.za is not allowed, it has to be xyza@abcd.co.za minimum?

Hi

I know that with the connect accounts we require a minimum of 4 characters, which could be the same for the business account.
However, I think you should be able to add an alias with a 3 character username.

To Mweb

I've been a loyal customer of yours since the 56k Black Box Days and now I have your Uncapped 6MB Premium ADSL subscription with you. I signed up for uncapped with you guys when you first offered it a few years back when uncapped became affordable. For the past few years your service was fine and the network seemed stable and fast.

However recently for the last +-3 months things have gone downhill, youtube doesn't stream as it use to (sometimes it doesn't even load), webpages are slow to load, p2p downloads dont go fast anymore or not at all. Overall I can tell that your network performance has degraded.

I've done my own testing to confirm this by switching to my backup Telkom account and now my new Vox account and its defiantly your network that is sub par. So much so that we going to cancel our mweb subscription in the next few days unless you can do something notable about it.

Kind regards,
Steve

No need to ..account will be downgraded to 1gb in a few days. My vox account confirmed my suspicions, I was being throttled on everything I downloaded regardless of the source website.

The shaping has gotten beyond ridiculous with Mweb these past few months. Now they are even shaping the windows 10 update. I'm got about 32kb/s - 50kb/s with mweb. The moment i switched to a different ISP it jumped up to 800kb/s+

I actually don't mind daytime shaping of torrents but Mweb's version of shaping seems to be a very blunt instrument. Clients using our application regularly get shaped even though it is local traffic amounting to, at most, 20MB/day. We use ports in the 8000 range, however, and this seems to fall foul of Mweb's shaping.

Solution - we advise our clients to change ISP.

What's up with your service mweb Last nights Hulu streaming was terrible 50 min to watch a 35 min show. I think I have been quite patient over the last 3 months. To top it off mweb is still charging for a adsl line they are not managing. Followed up after 1 week no resolution. Today is 2 weeks and still nothing. How can you trust an ISP who can even figure out they not managing your line. This has been happening for 3 months. I feel I'm getting ripped off. If it's not sorted I will have to cancel my account to sort it out myself.

Shaping speeds have been shocking what's the use of having fast internet if you not able to use it. What the use of payin premium prices for a device I can only use when everyone is sleeping. Frankly I feel stuck as other ISPs are really no better. But will swop if this situation does not improve.

Hi Phionix

Is it only Hulu you having issues with? Hulu unfortunately does not fall within our support scope. Usage shows your account is running well.

The account became an All Inclusive package in May and as per the logs this was explained to you/account holder. Please feel free to DM me the email sent requesting the line to be moved back to Telkom and I'll have the query resolved soon as possible.

I downgraded my uncapped premium account a few days before 31st to a 1gig data account with Mweb. Now as i understand it you are charged for the month ahead, i.e pay for the month of July on the 31st of June, month of August on the 31st of July etc.

So after downgrading i was just charged the full old amount for August instead of the new 1gig capped account. Is this normal practice now? Pretty sure it's not

no month-to-month contract option

Hi MWeb Guy, I'm trying to sign up for the 4mbps uncapped and at the start it say 'do you want a free FON router, subject to a 6month contract'.

Well I unclicked that box, I do not want a free FON Router, but the terms and conditions are still specifying a 6 month contract. ie there is no month-to-month option

Does MWeb actually have a standard 4mbps uncapped home month-to-month product? From the process I am following it seems not

Good Day Chris.Geerdts, please inbox me your preferred contact details and I will have a consultant make contact with you.

We should be able to provide you a month to month package.
