Your previous test was done at night when residential areas have their peak traffic. I had the same problem where my latencies were sky high between 7pm and 12pm. During the day everything was fine though.

Telkom moved me to a recently upgraded exchange and that solved everything. I suggest you contact them to do the same for you.

You may well be right, but then why did switching to another ISP account not suffer the same fate?

Still a little latency on your second hop with the other account... It was like 20mins later that you ran the test on the other account, so congestion might have subsided a bit by then.

I am not 100% sure of course, just letting you know that I had the same problem (tracert's looked identical during the times that I experienced issues) and how my problem was solved.

Good luck! :)

Thanks for that. I did check the Mweb connection immediately after the other ISP and it was still around 450, so it seem to be specifically Mweb related. Which is why I'm curious as to cause.

Can you please provide me with the tests you done from the link I provided you yesterday.

Please also include the tests done from the other ISP.

Hi MWEB Guy, I don't think you're understanding my question. If I do a lot of downloads from the MWEB Steam server does it count towards me being a high bandwidth user? Eg, over the past year I've bought and downloaded in excess of 1 TB worth of games. If I upload a lot to a local (South African) FTP server will it count towards high usage? If I do a lot of local browsing (not just .co.za sites, I'm talking about sites actually hosted in SA) will it count towards high usage? Or do you just measure total traffic and throttle regardless of what the traffic is or where the connection terminates on the other side?

Hi Oj0

Regardless of the upload or download location it is usage.

As the line is performing correctly at the moment, there isn't any point in posting results. When (if) there is an anomaly I'll test the various accounts and post. I'll be happiest if I never have to post.

Hey Mweb Guy, is there a wider international issue on your guys side since last night? I'm struggling to even stream video from tech crunch and youtube? Local speed test shows 5 meg down with 14ms ping, intl peaks at 1.6meg with 312ms ping... The needle really struggles to get past the 1 meg point on the intl test then spikes... so on average i would say im getting 900k/1meg...

Local speed test results: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2966226766

Server in LA: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2966229568

Hi phiber

We have no international speed related queries pop up. I checked your account and line and could not find any issues on it.

Have you perhaps asked Te4lkom to refresh the ADSL port?

Please do a test from here: http://www.mweb.co.za/helpcentre/MWEBSpeedTest.aspx

Hi Convex, send me a PM with your MWEB details so that I can have a look into this for you.

I said "capped" because that's basically what it is. Using the internet at 74 kbps is not throttling but castrating.
I got no warnings or any information about what download limits Mweb has put in place and now I am being
punished. I know you have nothing to do with this but if this is how Mweb wants to do business then they are
going to lose a lot of customers.

At the beginning of August we made the decision to implement an automated speed limiting system which would curb the behavior of a very small percentage of excessive users on our premium products. These users are affecting the quality of our network and using unreasonable amounts of bandwidth for the product they are paying for.

At the time we made a best effort to identify the users most likely to be affected by this change, based on their recent usage patterns, and sent out communication advising them of the change.

It is possible if your usage has significantly increased recently, or you do not make use of your MWEB mailbox, that you would not have received this communication.

However if your account is in a throttled state then it means that you have exceeded the acceptable usage thresholds and will need to operate at the reduced speeds until your average usage falls back into acceptable levels.

Yes, I know all this. I got a letter last month so I decreased my usage from an average of 8GB
a day to about 4GB a day. I thought I was being a "good customer" and was no longer a part
of the 3-5% of abusers. Clearly Mweb would prefer it I treat my 1Mbps "premium" account like
a 384kbps account. I was one of Mwebs biggest fans and defenders but now I don't know how
to defend any of this.
