MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 3

Mweb should consider revising the limits of the uncapped accounts. Given how media intensive the Internet has become. I can easily reach my 110gb on a 4mb line and that's without torrentting. Just things like YouTube or Twitch streaming. In the current state you're effectively paying for a speed limited, shaped, 110 gb capped account with a soft cap at the end. I just feel the gap between premium and normal is too large.

I've been on the 2mb premium and I can tell you with abusing that account I couldn't reach the threshold and now im on the 4mb normal uncapped and that threshold is very easy to reach.

4Mbps standard uncapped is R239 per month, or R449 including the line. This has a SOFT cap of around 110GB.

What capped account will compare? When I last researched earlier this year (things may have changed) you could get the following capped accounts for that price:

MWeb 20GB
Afrihost 50GB
Telkom 20GB
Axxess 50GB
Webafrica 60GB
@lantic 75GB

And uncapped certainly has a benefit. You can still check emails, make payments on Internet banking, or anything else you need to do online. Yes, streaming will suffer as it will buffer but your are not cut off. Start advantages does capped offer?

I've been on the 2mb premium and I can tell you with abusing that account I couldn't reach the threshold and now im on the 4mb normal uncapped and that threshold is very easy to reach.

The only thing i want to do is stream things, nothing else. i dont care if the content is in SD either. so if i can get by with a standard 2MB account without buffering then great, i can manage 75GB being throttled at. However, having done research it seems some of the other ISP's are throttling at least 100GB's.

These are not soft capped uncapped accounts. If they were, you'd be cut off for the remainder of the month/30 day period. Which is false, as stopping downloading for 1 - 2 days will bring you back under the threshold again, back to full speed.

Please share your findings. When doing so please also consider shaping policies. I was considering a number of other ISPs at one point but found they had "non-transparent" things like star ratings (since dropped I think) and overall network shaping based on network congestion and the like. At least with MWeb my usage affects my throttling.

Will do so Dubes. Right now I'm just researching like a mad man, because the cost involved for my needs is just crazy. So I'm looking at cost, where and when I'm being throttled, and so on.

MOrning, I think you've just highlighted it there.

The Premium packages are the packages with higher thresholds, the 4Mbps premium has a threshold of approximately 400GB.

Product options are made available to clients and you then need to choose what is best suited for your needs.

Reading this forum, seems to me that these limits impact 80% customers - most of them regular customers.
Customers that do some gaming, watch youtube, perhaps, stream a movie from DSTV Catchup, etc.
These are just regular Mom+Pop+2Kids customers.

These are not the abusers that bittorrent, NZBdownload 24x7 that the limits were initially implemented for.

"regular" package is not suitable for "regular" customers anymore.

The thresholds have nothing to do with bandwidth management anymore.
The purpose of these limits is to push regular customers to premium packages and make more money for MWEB.

The standard packages were not designed to be used for data intensive traffic.

Premium packages are more suited for the higher end users.

Clients need to ensure that they select the package best suited for their usage needs.

I have a question, MWEB Guy, Can I still keep my email if I cancel with you guys ?, Is their some monthly fee that I have to pay ?

To be fair, at 110GB per month we are unlikely to be the average mom, pops and two kids.

It is very likely that if there is no p2p, torrents etc then there certainly is a large degree of streaming going on. My guess would be some Netflix, Hulu or the like. I appreciate the fact that these stream perfectly at all times on MWeb and I manage my data usage and soft cap accordingly.

The "average" family that I know are not even familiar with these streaming services.

Afternoon, you do have the option to move to a capped package or mail box only to retain your MWEB email address.

I've split my vote.
I use Mweb until the uncapped limit is reached, and another ISP for top-up.
There is just too much of a cost gap between standard and premium.
6Mbps Standard and 6Mbps Premium - R370 more
10Mbps Standard and 10Mbps Premium - R460 more
