So do we have a liar in our midst?

I just wish people would tell the truth about the ISP they are using so others reading this forum can use this information to make an informed decision about their ISP choice.

Oh, come on Lance, I was just having a bit of fun. :)

EDIT: Hmm, maybe I misread your post :)

Speed Update

I have a 384k line and its hopeless now, just reverted back to my WA account. I've been getting less than 5kbs total download speed from Thursday. Browsing is useless, downloading (obviously useless), latency OMG and not to mention the rerouting of my traffic. Now I know there was maintenance done (or will be done) on the cable but this is ridicules. That cable seems a bit to unreliable at this stage to provide this service they boast it does for any type of business or real personal use. Where is our paradise going?

@ Everyone ...

Does anyone know the makeup of the Seacom Cables? i.e. how it was installed, how they did it, schematics, etc?
I checked the site but there is very little info there. Is it supposed to be a secret? Will Malema see me as a BL@@DY agent if ask the questions?

My browsing is ok but I am getting "unable to connect" errors for the mweb news server. If this is the norm I will get nowhere near the 30Gb downloads calculated in the other thread... this in turn will make this service of no use to me. Might as well revert back to using Telkom local again.

Would you like me to search for the large number of posts where I was accused of being an employee/owner of another ISP for stating that MWeb's T&Cs allowed them to impose even more stringent throttling/shaping etc than other ISPs? I even have numerous PMs singing the praises of MWeb and condemning Afrihost as a has-been ISP

LOL .... u too? I almost got banned for speaking my mind... "uncapped" actually means "as much as you you want but we govern the speed you get it at" ...should be in the T&C don't you think?

i can confirm that the newserver is dead in the water with seacom. u know what amazes me is that even over weekends mweb shape traffic?

I am not sure about the news servers, all that I am saying is, having international BW > no international BW. Look, I say it as I see it, sure I am not happy when I cannot download from news servers, but my general service from mweb is currently alot better than that of afrihost. Atleast when p2p and news servers is slow during the day, browsing and http downloading is still nice and fast. But currently when afrihost throttles you, you are really throttled in all aspects of the internet. So, imo, half ****ty service is better than fully ****ty service. *flame on*

It's much faster. I’m getting in excess of 25kbs which isn’t much but at least it’s going.

From Afrihost website

The uncapped service is designed for humans who want to use the internet as much as they want - for some downloading, streaming media, browsing, and more. It is not designed for computer programs that are setup to continuously download 24/7, 30 days a month.

The vast majority of our Uncapped clients will be able to use as much as they want.

However, we will take action on the very small minority who through their usage start affecting all of our other clients' internet experience.

...now this is what I like. Unlike MWEB who throttles/shapes the EVERYBODY, AH actuall takes the time to identify the "culprits" and takes action on those. Why can't MWEB do the same?

Hey!!! MWEB dude/ gal / rep ...where are you? you been awefully quiet since the "maintenance" or is it MAMEtenance?

It is, and that is what I was at pains to point out before I went with this offering but everyone was obviously so misted over with the possibility of being able to download the internet that they overlooked this and just repeatedly sung the praises about how great MWeb was and how everyone else sucked. As someone not using the service all you can do is believe them. Unfortunately I am aware that if their were no problems you can't report on them but all the praise resulted in me doing a lot less research than I usually would.

Anyway, I have a few days to give my month's notice so let's see if it comes right ASAP!

But that only happens at 40Gbs on the 384k service. With MWeb's speeds on the news server I am unlikely to reach 40Gbs in a month with the hours that I download!

As stated by someone else, I don't want my service affected by other's use. Rather tell me that when I reach a certain number I will be throttled.

Bradlesliect, are you a child? if you dont like mweb and the way the deal with stuff, why would you make use of them? Move to afrihost, no-one is stopping you, complain complain complain, that is all most of you people can do.

PS - 174.09 GB on Mweb. There is but NO way you will get that with Afrihost in a month. Thanks Mweb :)

Is everyone getting the same packet loss? I imagine this is due to the Seacom issues - right?

Wow, there is so much negativity in this thread. To everyone pointing fingers @ MWEB in this thread, especially the Afrihost fanboys.

MWEB have provided a very good service thus far, other ISP's with uncapped @ this price range don't come close to the QoS that MWEB have provided thus far.

If you're going to point fingers, please post your DL's for the month on your ~R499 IS package. Then post your average download speed, if it's better than the below please feel free to point fingers...until then go back in to your hole and STFU!!!

I agree - I've had a great experience with them so far, and it doesnt seem fair to blame them for a cable outage...?

My understanding is that the Seacom cable provides affordable bandwidth for the first time, such that MWeb (and others) are finally able to offer us uncapped bandwidth at an affordable cost. We can't blame MWeb for the Seacom faults. If MWeb had not decided to use Seacom, we'd all still be capped or on expensive uncapped? I'd rather they repair the cable, than not repair it. Spare a thought for the guys out on the rough seas in bad weather fixing the cable. I'm sure it's not an easy job.
