MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

I still get decent speeds on torrents... Though I do have to wonder, why does Mweb not shape uploads?

Ive been having a problem with DC++ since sometime last month, my downloads refuse to connect if i dont switch forwarded ports every so often.
And international access going out every friday means someone up the provider chain is cutting corners or has terrible karma.

Slow line

Hi Mweb Operations

I've got an Mweb business uncapped 4mbit line with static IPs.

I've been getting fairly constants speeds just in excess of 220KB/sec since I got the line. I don't think it goes faster than that because of my Telkom line. So far the service has been pretty good... but about two days ago things went a bit odd.

Lately my line has really slowed down. Some HTTP downloads keep failing (in Firefox they'll show as complete, but at a fraction of their size). Wget retries multiple times.

A test on speedtest.net using the JHB option gives me a rating of 0.58mbit download and 0.39mbit upload, with a latency of 95ms.

Downloads from international sites (distfiles.gentoo.org and netbsd tested) don't seem to exceed 40KB/sec.

Is there a failure on Seacom ? has someone flipped the switch on my line ?

The router doesn't lose Carrier Detect/doesn't drop the line.

Thanks
P.S. It's quite progressive for Mweb for have a rep on here.

P.P.S. I've just tried the same download via ssh on my office PCs (they're on a piddly 384k line) and I'm getting around 32KB/sec, the same download was running at 22KB/sec on my 4mbit line. (File : http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/bash-3.2-patched.tar.gz)

P.P.S. Murphy's law ? Now files are coming in, from the same international servers via http at between 90KB/sec and 220KB/sec. Speedtest now reports a download speed of 1.85mbit/sec, latency of 64ms and upload of 0.41mbit.

Hi I asked the same question a few months back, I just want to know if anything has changed.
How is the internet gaming on the 384 line uncapped?
Thanks.

First trace route is using MWEB, the second one is using a VPN connection on top of the same MWEB connection. Using same browsers, Windows, machine, just clicked the VPN connection after doing the first traceroute.
The problem is not at my end, the problem is with MWEB's peering with TELKOM etc. The page loads if it goes via the offshore VPN but doesn't load now (it doesn't even load) if I go directly. Again using same browser, just clicking Refresh after connecting up the VPN tunnel.

Hi PeterCH

I've just tested the site on a 384k MWEB connection and could not replicate the problem you are describing, the site is quick and all pages load fully. Looking at the traceroute that you've provided from the MWEB connection I don't see any indication there of a peering problem and traces and pings from my side are all completing successfully.

Please PM your MWEB Account details and I'll have one of our specialists contact you to troubleshoot this further.

Kind Regards
MWEB Operations

It also times out for me.

It also times out for me.

Are you in Cape Town, Tanya35? Where is MWEB Operations - maybe not in Cape Town - it could be a CPT thing.

It's not a local machine problem because the only variable I change is the VPN connection.
I connect freshly booted computer without VPN - site times out. Other sites work.
I connect the VPN - site loads perfectly.
I disconnect the VPN - click refresh - site times out. (other sites like MyBB and Google.co.za work)
I connect VPN again - click refresh - site loads perfectly.

I am in Cape Town PeterCH, however bear in mind that our IPC breakout is situated at our data centre in JHB so all customers would take the same route to the server regardless of geographical location.
Are you experiencing a problem loading any other portions of the site, or is it just the track and trace functionality? As I don't have a parcel to trace myself I can't go beyond the front screen of the track and trace utlity, but the rest of the site loads perfectly.
If this is the case it's possible that the problem could be caching related, this would be consistent with your experience of it working via vpn as this would bypass our caching servers.

Once again if you PM me your details I can arrange for one of our specialists to contact you and gather all the neccesary details of the exact error you are experiencing so that we can escalate this to our networks team to investigate :-)

Kind Regards
MWEB Operations

Post office and parcel tracking pages has for me always mostly not worked or worked slow enough to make murder a very good option...
If im lucky it decides to work, this behaviour was customary WAY before uncapped so I just thought it was a gov related service being governmental hehehe
