MWEB: International Bandwidth Update

We completed our cutover to the Seacom cable in the early hours of this morning and everything looks to be working fine. We'll continue to monitor closely but so far it's looking good.

Kind Regards
MWEB Operations

Users continue to report heavy shaping outside of business hours, before, during and after the SEACOM outage. On a number of occasions MWeb has posted details of the shaping policy. Most recently, a detailed description was provided by the Technical Manager.

Based on those descriptions of how the shaping works, would it be correct to conclude that the heavy shaping outside of business hours is a result of the misuse of the network by some users?

If enough users are running internet cafe's on "Home" accounts or are constantly bypassing the shaping, this would mean that the priority pool of bandwidth remains under heavy usage (mimicking normal "office hours" usage), even after hours and at weekends, thereby resulting in no reduction of shaping.

This could result in a negative feedback loop, whereby more and more users become frustrated at the poor performance of their lines, so they are "forced" to bypass shaping, thereby creating a greater burden on the network and reducing performance, etc.

I actually had to re-read this post of yours. I have come to the conclusion you either work for MWEB? You are hoping that they will see you support them and offer you a job? Or is it that you have the same mindset as the majority of South African businesses? That it is rather the customers fault than the companies? How you can actively now take MWEB's side and just blame the users astounds me. If you and MWEB think that people paying +-R535 a month for an uncapped browsing service is fair then you are seriously mistaken. People would not have bypassed the shaping if MWEB didn't shape it to death. There is a hell of a difference between 300KB/s and 4KB/s, sadly though you and MWEB will never understand this.

Reread my post again. I am asking the MWeb rep. a question in an attempt to understand why some users (call them Users "A") are experiencing heavy shaping out of office hours. If my understanding of shaping is correct, misuse of the network (by Users "B" for example) will result in a smaller pool of bandwidth being available for the shaped protocols, thereby result in the slower performance of these protocols as experienced by Users "A".

God forbid someone makes a coherent, intelligent post on mybroadband.

BURN HIM AT THE STAKE!!!!!!!!!!!

Jokes aside though, clearly MWEB needs to start being more transparent as the majority of the users are clearly frustrated at the situation.

By reading this thread i decided that if i was to enjoy uncapped i would need to pay extra for the unshaped (384 as my exchange doesn't support 4MB yet) so i am on the internet addict package and so far have downloaded 7.61GB since the 22nd.

If i look at Afrihost unshaped for R29 per GB, it would have cost me R220 to download the same amount so far, thats why i am aiming to maximise the value of my uncapped unshaped.

I would have gotten the 4MB shaped uncapped if it could support it.

I honestly don't see why people are so upset. I do roughly around 150GB - 200GB a month on my mweb account and I am never frustrated or feel like MWEB are "doing me in" because I get what I pay for. An uncapped account. Best internet experience across the many ISPs I have had over the past 6 years of having ADSL.

Bear in mind that the Addict package has the same T&C as the non-Addict/non-Business. Therefore, if you do something to disrupt your fellow users' internet experience by 'downloading too much' or at the wrong time of the day or whoever knows what, they may label you an abuser.

Clarity is all that we want. If abuse is 10GB over 2 days then at least we know. This is akin to giving people speeding tickets but not putting a sign first telling you what the speed limit is.

You may be inadvertently abusing the network. That's just it. You may be an abuser, but you don't even know it. If MWEB said - OK, 200GB is OK, nothing to concern yourself over, I would be satisfied. Max I ever did was 235GB in the first month. Now it will be under 150GB, and I still have G-Connect GBs I bought because of MWEB's SEACOM outage I must use up before they expire - these are UNSHAPED SAIX GBs. We want more clarity and less vagueness.

Agreed fully, they need to give all customers insight into what is actually going on.

I do know that they market the internet addict as a downloaders package so if i ever get the mail or the call i will fight it

Vagueness about what? I'm not an abuser because I don't overstep MWEB's terms and conditions.

Please try again.

So do you sit at your computer when ever you download, "since it is active internet use"
and this may mean "Unattended use: where a user installs software that allows continuous downloads and uploads" using torrents

Fully agree with Linoman what a joke.
I don't see how any rational person can defend mweb unless of course.....

Clearly you have not read and understood my post. I'm not sure how else to communicate it except by writing it in English as I have done.

I'll rephrase it here to help you though:

I am asking the MWeb rep. whether the poor performance (that is, the heavy shaping) experienced by some users during "out of office" times (that is, evenings, early mornings, weekends) is a direct result of the extent of misuse of the network by other users. That is, is the extent of misuse of the network "so bad" that evenings/early mornings/weekends are "the same" as office hours, and therefore subject to heavy shaping.

No matter how I read my original post, or this rephrasing of it, I cannot fathom how you and Linoman can interpret it as (1) me working for MWeb or (2) it being a joke or (3) me defending MWeb or (4) me trying to get a job offer from MWeb.
