MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

Hi All,

Yes, the above IP address resolution for news.mweb.co.za is incorrect (the IP belongs to SAIX's news server not MWEB's), investigating whether this is a fault on MWEB's dns servers. Am awaiting feedback from engineering.

Edit: Milano, yes your resolution appears to be the correct one, am also verifying this after the recent updates.

2. In my WinXp the option to "obtain DNS server address automatically" is greyed out. So I am using my router address for preferred DNS server and 196.25.255.3 as alternate. Is that correct and optimal?

1. news.mweb.co.za [196.28.78.229] is the correct server, not the other IP.
2. Always set your router to detect DNS settings, always the best and optimal setting to use. Don't hardcode it.

My router is ancient. It's a Telkom Router Pots (single port) - must have been the first one issued by Telkom for ADSL so although I can access the router it is not exactly user friendly and I can't see an option to enable the router to detect DNS

Hhmm, then it most likely is already on Detect Automatically or something... as long as there are no static DNS servers (IPs) specified, you should be good.
Your news.mweb.co.za is resolving correctly anyway, isn't it?

Yep, it is resolving to 196.28.78.229 so I'm good there My only concern is that my DNS servers are hard-coded in XP but maybe that is not too much of an issue.

XP should not be interfering with your Internet ADSL connection.
You can check if you have DNS server settings set by open a Command Prompt and type ipconfig /all and then look for your local NIC and see if any DNS settings are specified. Your router is probably giving your PC NIC a DHCP IP anyway.

Is the shaper working correctly, I am getting full speed off news.mweb.co.za during the day and 20KB/s at night!
Would rather say it and know that it going to be this way, than finding out it a bug and I'm causing problems...

Shees, 52 pages. I dont know if this has been asked before. LATENCY!!! MWEB, you advertise your 4mb Uncapped as the account suitable for gaming. Last night was my first night on your 4Mb uncapped and I had shocking pings (150ms+) to local gaming servers from 7pm, till just after 10 when it got down to a more acceptable 70ms. Is this what we can expect? Or is somebody working on this? If this is the case I cant use your service at all. No adsl land line should have such bad pings. I had sub 40ms ping to local servers on my DO3 account.

news.mweb.co.za is still resolving to 196.43.2.61 for me, and yes its on automatic, allso dont know if its relavent but my internet connection died last night about 11:30 and then at round 8 this morning connected again

i have not been able to since the swap over to uncapped ??

that 's just that start , download's are pedestrian, gaming well don't go there, & im in cape town and all my traffic is look's like it is all going to joberg before the real world ?

Observation from me as well - last night playing Battlefield BC2 on SGS and iGame servers ping was all over the place from 40ms to 140ms.

Switched to Afrihost account and went down to 14ms-16ms.

Any comments from MWebs side ? Was it a general problem ?

If your router is doing the DNS lookup, then reboot your router. If your PC is doing it, then reboot the PC. Either way you must flush your DNS cache to resolve the MWeb news server 196.28.78.229.

Jip, was also playing BC2 on the 5 SGS (dont get me started on this) last night. My ping never dropped below 100, which resulted in my @ss being handed to me over and over. Wasn't fun.

Jip, 99 not all that great either. I think you can get that on 3G nowadays.

Can anyone from Mweb help me? I do have an ADSL line that WA manages and I want to change to the uncapped unshaped Business ADSL that Mweb offers for R2359.00. I called the call centre and got told that Mweb have to apply to Telkom for us to get a new ADSL line.

Why can't Mweb just take over the management of the line?

Then I have another account with WA. That line is managed by Telkom. I would also like to change that account for the business package that Mweb offers.

So, now....do I also have to apply for a new ADSL line now through Mweb?

You can't ping the news servers (ICMP packets turned off), but you can ping www.iol.co.za (based in CT), which is about 50ms.

However its worse if you run tracert on local sites. You can also see that the routing goes via MTN business. (That's 14 hops, so I'm not going to paste into this Q&A thread...)

Traffic seems to be very congested on the Jhb-CT leg. This may be why some users are complaining more than others.

I have not received a direct response from Mweb to at least 5 specific questions about traffic issues, other than its being looked at...
