MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

The new MWeb backbone routing table seems to have an excessive number of hops to some destinations (presumably as part of the shaping and load balancing). For example 14 hops to www.iol.co.za which is a local site based in the same city as me!
.

Gordon_R, mind posting the output of your traceroute? Would like to have a look at it.

Hi Gordon_R,

This is the nature of the IPC routing architecture, some paths will have a few extra hops. I'm sure if you try another provider's IPC based service you will see something similar.

That said hop count is not usually a good measure of experience quality or performance. If the devices & interconnecting links along the path are running optimally, impact should be negligable barring a few extra ms in latency.

MWB.

Well, that's exactly my point, but its about transparency! I understand these things, but the average user may not. Saying 'trust us' works if things improve, but when things deteriorate then users get annoyed (and paranoid ;-)

If I hadn't read it on MyBB, I would have no idea that as an existing subscriber to Mweb, my terms of service had substantively changed, and that it could affect the quality and performance (both positive and negative). I usually get lots of notifications from MWeb about other stuff, but have not received any communication about the migration process. (Granted the network backbone is not exactly spelled out in the Terms & Conditions).

I posted my tracerts on another thread that someone else started. This Q&A thread is waaay to long already:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?223147-Tracert-on-Mweb-uncapped

The ping times are not too bad (50ms), but it does indicate that some local ISP's are not peering (see other threads), so the traffic has to go on a roundabout route. (Traffic outside SA behaves much the same as it did previously). If you are having problems with gaming sites, this routing may be a cause of jitter.

Edit: Ping times from me in CT, to sites hosted in CT, include 2 round-trips from CT/Jhb, which explains the relatively high values. (4X1500km=6000km is halfway to London!)

Be reasonable! You are wanting MWeb to almost TRIPLE the retention period because one user asks for it "officially" on an online forum? The MWEB rep. on this forum is not a personal assistant / secretary for all of us, to whom we can simply issue requests like "Please advise me of their official reply". I'm sure the rep. and MWEB itself are much more busy with proper, sensible requests and with maintaining their infrastructure and service.

Don't get your panties all knotted :D I am a customer, I have the right to make a polite request, I'm not talking to you so STFU! If the MWeb rep has a problem with my request he is big enough to handle it himself so keep your nose where it belongs. I have been an MWeb user since iAfrica so I don't need some little band-wagon jumper telling me what what I am and am not allowed to ask! Got it jackass?

Who's got their panties in a knot?

Thanks for this. Very mature. Notice the *absence* of juvenile personal attacks in this reply.

You might be a customer, but you do not pay for news server subscriptions. This is given out on behalf of them. So i think they are most likely canning themselves at your 600day retention request. I know i did.:D

is mweb blocking port 80 on their uncapped accounts?

If your ports are being blocked, look at your mweb cilent console there is an option to protect you. You can disable it. But apart from that no they dont.

Double post to lazy to edit.

OH RLY? Yep, they must be considering I was downloading articles from news.mweb.co.za on 21 March which were 500 days old. DUH! Read the thread :D

Are you challenged? Perhaps they have 500d retention ?
