Hi politicallycorrect,

I've just been informed that there's a possible problem with certain DNS's which is causing the news server connections to fail for some clients. This is being investigated as we speak. There is no official outage yet regarding this

Hi tamakachi and other news downloaders,

Try changing your DNS to 196.28.80.139 & 196.28.80.140 and let me know if it connects on news. Please remember that this is only an interim fix. Your DNS settings is supposed to be dynamic and may require to be reset again if you do enter static settings

Well I decided to fire up my old 56k connection just so that I can download something without it failing over and over again. I tried to download skype 4 times each time it fails, finally got Itunes downloaded, a few othre apps I just gave up on.
 
Um yeah, both those don't work. For me anyway.

Google doesn't even load with the 139 addy. Nice one.

Victory, stable at 25kb/s with 2 maximum active threads.
Very slow but it's one step closer to resolving the problem.
 
I'm using the google DNS servers and not having any problems.

8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your Primary and Secondary DNS servers

Sorry that it doesn't work for you Adrenalin, as you can see it did work for some, me included. We'll have to wait for another resolution to the problem
 
Thanks for the update. Any ideas as to torrents downloading? I don't want to have to wait so long for the downloads via uTorrent and I don't want to break Mweb's rules on SSH either.

You're welcome, another note with this DNS is the http problem has resolved too.
Youtube no longer takes awhile to cache.

This is totally a DNS problem.
If I were you, I would inform the techies to tell callers to change to this dns until the automatic config is up and running.

If I don't get to all posts, I do apologise. This particular problem I had myself and only found a temporary solution for it before posting it earlier

I do not have any further updates on the status of torrent downloads. We are doing our utmost to give all our clients a fair experience and will continuously try to accomodate all

It works and is running at ~36kb/s on a 384 line. What I've noticed a while back is if I use Google's DNS servers, I can't connect to the Mweb news server or my downloads are erratic. As soon as I remove the Google DNS servers from being in use on my machine, it goes back to normal. Could you provide some clarity regarding this?
 
I'm a bit late to this thread, but I've been having DNS issues for the last 24 hours.

I just rebooted my ADSL modem, and it came up with 2 DNS servers that I've never seen before:
196.28.75.200 and 196.28.75.210

I hope they work better, but seriously, this is not just an NNTP issue...

What Mweb have to do is give us official information regarding shaping.
i.e. Percentage of shaping done to what service at what time.
That way customers will know exactly what to expect and whether or not to stick with mweb.

I was at 450Kb/s at 7AM and then at 8AM dropped to 300Kb/s and then dropped to 270Kb/s and the shaping has been getting tigher and tighter through out the day......
Currently i'm getting +- 36Kb/s on a 4mb line connected to an international news server.
On my webafrica account i'm getting +- 850Kb/s

Now if thats not shaping by mweb then I don't know what is.
To pay for a 4mb service and be limited to speeds of 36kb/s is just ridiculous.
 
Man what a good weekend.. I queued up 45 Gigs worth of stuff to download from astroweb..

I have so far downloaded 37 Gigs of it.. Wow Mweb the speeds have been amazing all weekend. Hopefully the queue will be done by tomorrow morning..

Well done mweb for the excellent speeds.. keep it up.

I know I moan a lot, but I also give credit where it is due... We are finally seeing some benefit from this upgrade..
