Sorry, to break the ice (or whatever that saying is :P).
I can't get more than 40kb/s over FTP, HTTP, Newsservers or Torrents this morning.
I have an MWeb Uncapped 4mbps account and Line.

Hi Ronald

If it's affecting all your activities it sounds like your line might not be getting full speed. Our call centre is operational today, can I suggest that you contact them and ask them to troubleshoot with you and raise a line fault if neccesary.

Oh and Merry Xmas :)

Oh and Merry Xmas :)

Merry Xmas Will! Hope you have a good one. Just fitted a fan to the heatsink and now I'm able to watch 720P youtube videos with no buffering ;) That might just be cause it's xmas day. I could be losing my mind.

Merry Christmas guys.

I hope I don't jinx it, but I have to say, over the last couple of weeks, my NNTP has been amazing on MWeb. Torrents are so-so, but sometimes you take what you get I reckon. Thanks for the service guys.

Having a terrible time with my MWEB account for the last 2 weeks.

- Newserver downloads do not exceed 8-12kb/s using both the MWEB server and the Easynews.com server, even on cached content (I have a 384kb line)
- HTTP downloads are erratic, but do peak at the 40kb/s mark.
- Pages timeout for no apparent reason or do not fully load, even with all forms of other downloads stopped.

On top of it all I've used about 50% less bandwidth that I usually do per month for December so I doubt it's an "abuse" thing.

Speedtest results seem to be fine though:

grab a file off local ftp site and see what your speed is like :
ftp://ftp.is.co.za/BSD/distributions/freebsd/ISO-IMAGES-amd64/7.2/7.2-RELEASE-amd64-livefs.iso

and then a file of local http:
http://www.visualsidekick.com/Downloads/VskSetup_3-0-223.exe

finally get international http and ftp. compare int with local...

Apparently MWeb Ops thinks the problem lies on Telkom's side and that I should ask them to conjure up an explanation and feed it back to Mweb.

I, however, am not convinced seeing as the issue persists only newservers and all other sources seem to be able to achieve a full +/- 40kb/s whether the file lies locally or internationally. What Mweb Ops would like me to request Telkom to do is also a mystery to me.

Hi Iwojima

You also advised the following in your initial post;

"- Newserver downloads do not exceed 8-12kb/s using both the MWEB server and the Easynews.com server, even on cached content (I have a 384kb line)
- HTTP downloads are erratic, but do peak at the 40kb/s mark.

When we did your line interrogation we noticed an irregular reading, Telkom normally would first do a port re-create to see if that clears up your problem. Please note that we could not help with this as your line is with Telkom.

Please see the below irregular line reading, as it still hasn't changed.

Field Result Description

ATUC Current Rate 0 kbps The current downstream speed established between the DSLAM and customer’s modem, e.g. 4096k, 512k or 384k.

ATUC SNR 2.8 dB The signal level compared to the noise level. A value above 6 dB indicates sufficient signal strength. The higher the signal value, the better. Does the customer have an electric fence? This could cause an increased in noise levels resulting in a reduction of this value.

ATUC Attenuation 1.7 dB Attenuation refers to resistance. If this value is high, then the signal quality is low, and vice versa. Is the customer far away from the exchange? Long copper lines could be the cause of attenuation. A value above 55 dB is of concern (bad).

ATUC Max Rate No data was returned for this query

ATUC Min Rate No data was returned for this query

ATUC Alarm State not defined. Is displayed if any faults are found on the DSLAM port.

ATUR Current Rate 0 kbps The speed at which Router communicates to remote DSLAM, e.g. 384k, 128k.

ATUR SNR 3.8 dB The signal level compared to the noise level. A value above 6 dB indicates sufficient signal strength. The higher the signal value, the better. Does the customer have an electric fence? This could cause an increased in noise levels resulting in a reduction of this value.

ATUR Attenuation 0.8 dB Attenuation refers to resistance. If this value is high, then signal quality is low, and vice versa. Is the customer far away from the exchange? Long copper lines could be the cause of attenuation. A value above 55 dB is of concern (bad).

Hi IwoJima the readings on your line are not accurate and are confusing the situation. This can happen when a portion of the link is running over fibre, sometimes terminating in a mini DSLAM. I've asked the team to check your line conditions again based on this information and have also asked them to initiate a request to Telkom to check for possible congestion.

@Will Router problems suddenly went away after a hard reset. Changing wifi channels also helped signal strength.

Xbox live downloads going quite well(Downloaded all the free arcade games on the american marketpalce and some trials) no issues.

Wow, MWEB HTTP shaping has been disgusting this month. Even more shaped than P2P... It took 20 minutes to open a wikipedia page with much reloading...

Hi simmo

We don't shape http and that's certainly not a normal experience you're describing. Please PM your details to MWEB Operations and ask the team to assist you with troubleshooting.
