MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

This may be a fairly lengthy post, here goes.

A couple of general things. Firstly, not everyone is going to post when they are having a problem. I for example will browse this thread and if I see a number of posts highlighting the same issue that I am experiencing, I assume it's a general issue and that MWeb are attending to it so I won't bother posting (partly to prevent cluttering up an already cluttered thread).
Secondly, many posts do not provide much information of use. They will simply be along the lines of "my connection's slow" or "my speed sucks" and so on. I guess this is possibly why many PMs are requested by Will. Many people don't even have their location listed which could be of some help. I also think a decent proportion of problems are not MWeb related or under their control.
Thirdly, from the postings over the last week and a half (and this is my personal observation) there does appear to be a widespread issue with MWeb. Though it appears to be prevalent in Gauteng, and is mainly limited to certain types of shaped traffic (Usenet/news servers in particular).

Now for my problem in particular. This will be my 8th month with MWeb (uncapped, shaped on 4096kbps line). I'm not a particularly difficult customer and am fairly easy to please, so while there has been an issue here and there, I have been quite happy overall and have not considered moving in that time. 138GB is the largest amount of data I have downloaded in one month in that period. Most of that coming off Usenet/news servers (Giganews to be specific). During office hours I would get 10KB/s and while this is extremely slow on a 4096kbps line I understood, due to it being a shaped account and was satisfied with that. Speed would increase to 60KB/s early evening once shaping started to relax, then late night 120KB/s and finally 250+KB/s early hours of the morning when shaping was at it's lowest. So while at times the speeds may have been slow it was consistent. Then around 10 days ago something changed, and since then downloading from Giganews at any time other than the early hours of the morning has been an exercise in futility, with speeds being non-existent, peaking now and again at 2KB/s. Let me say, that browsing and downloading e-mail has been fine, as has downloading from Steam (running at 250+KB/s). Speedtests also show the account to be fine. I also have a number of other accounts with different ISPs (both freebies and capped), and when using these, Giganews runs at full speed so I am confident in saying that it is not a line or exchange problem. The fact that Giganews also runs at full speed on MWeb itself during the early hours of the morning when shaping is at it's most relaxed suggests that the shaping has a major role in whatever changed 10 days ago.
What I simply want to know from MWeb/Will is, are MWeb aware of this? Are they investigating? And is there any reasonable expectation of the speeds on the news server returning to what they were previously (slow at times but consistent), or are MWeb satisfied with the way things are running at the moment in regards to the shaping and they don't forsee much change?

Perhaps the issue is with the News servers and not your line/isp?

I'm on torrents and I get excellent speeds. 430kb/s after hours and between 80kb/s and 200kb/s during the day. Mweb is the best

I'm happy for you, on my side still waiting for telkom to srt out my line which down since teusday (Glenvista JHB) hopefully after its fixed I can get down with the Mweb guy and sort out my news server speeds!

Never know, your speeds could be fine after the line fix. :) Hope it's sorted soon though!! :)

my news server speeds are going at 300KB/s during the day so can't be a news server issue. Maybe check what you are downloading. Maybe that is whats causing it to be slow.

I also tried downloading a HD movie and it was slow but my series's non HD version is freaking amazing. Going at 250 - 300+KB/s

No, because changing to a different ISP account gets normal, full speeds.

Different isp uses different are using a different news server so thats why the speeds are good. Remember the stuff you downloading needs to be cached on the server first maybe it's already cached on the other news server and not on MWEB.

Rouxenator and J0n0 are both happy with the speeds they are achieving, but one is in Stellenbosch and the other East London which is why I think the problem is concentrated in Gauteng/inland.

I don't use the MWeb news server, I exclusively use Giganews. What area of SA are you in nelis?

This morning at round about 7am speeds were great as well as last night. I'm at work now so cannot comment on daytime speeds tbh. I have noticed more people that are having issues are inland. So you're right, maybe there's something not too lekker happening. Hope they get to the bottom of it though.

MWEB Guy I only just saw this now so I havent done the router reset for 20-30mins thing. However some time this afternoon my speeds became even worse. Now because you said you refreshed my account I dont know if that has something to do with it. Tonight I see my router is syncing at 1680kbps then I unplug and reboot and its 2220kbps - different syncs every reboot.

I must be honest and tell you that the voice part of my line has been down for a few days but thankfully the ADSL didnt fall down with it. Having said that my internet portion has been no better or no worse so the voice portion being down seems to have no bearing. Telkom actually were here this afternoon but didnt do anything as they couldnt get access to the underground manhole. The tech has handed it over to repair division. So that doesnt seem to account for the sudden degradation this afternoon either.

For the last couple of months I have had general poor performance on MW uncapped. Browsing and especially Youtube is very laggy. If I get a good torrent I can get 150 - 180 Kbps on the download but generally 80-100. Since this afternoon Youtube is almost stopped and browsing extra slow. I will unplug and turn off the router when I go to bed tonite and check in the morning. (Telkom should also repair the line tomorrow)

One thing I have noticed over the last few months and I think I have mentioned it here and/or posted the speedtest results is that the ping to the Durban Vodacom server on Speedtest.net is always around 250ms but the ping to the Joburg servers (cellc i think) are 35ms. This hase been consisently the case and worries me. Another thing I keep meaning to do is try borrow a normal ADSL account from someone and test it against the uncapped account but havent had this opportunity yet.

Hi Freshy-ZN,

Your Voice portion of the line can bring some problems to your ADSL connection. Like I mentioned before, your account shows many dropped connection on our side. Doing speed test and not getting the same results can be the network that you doing the speed test from is taking a strain.

Have Telkom check everything, even ask them to check if any of your cables are corroded.

Your line is not synced on 4Meg. You have a 4Meg line but it looks like it's syncing on 1792 kbps. Have you made contact with Telkom and asked what speed your line is synced on?

We have had many customers complain about line speed but then we find that the line is actually synced on a lower speed than what they thought.

Please give Telkom a call and as soon as they have resolved all your line issues feedback me the line tests you've done.

Kind regards,

MWEB guy

Downloading a file over HTTP - 27KB/s on a 4Mbit line.

Hi Donovan,

Where is the file pulling from. If it's a 1 click hosting site, it will be regarded as P2P.

Try using a download manager and it could even be that the site you pulling from can be very busy at the moment.

I have taken off Protected Access on your account. What this does is, it opens up more ports to your connection and makes it vulnerable to hacking.
I advise that you make sure your anti-virus and firewalls are up to date.

I can always turn it back on.

Please power down your router for 20-30min and test.

Kind regards,

MWEB Guy
