4mbps line. 4mbps MWEB uncapped.
Downloading 1 torrent, from a fast private tracker. Similar torrent did 400kBps for hours last weekend. Currently doing 40kBps. Been like this since the weekend. resetting router achieves nothing apart from a router reset.
Just tested same torrent on SAIX account, 420kBps.
Back to MWEB 40kBps.
Most annoying thing is that connection attempts to torrent trackers are timing out. On at least 2 different private trackers the highest speed I can achieve on my MWEB account in that case is 0kBps.
Axxess Express+ was terrible but it was never this terrible at 21:49.

It's true; they get what you pay for.

Lots of people that could not go with SOAL or were on other slower providers signed up on 1st of May with Mweb and now they are also congesting the network with lots of torrents and you are seeing the results... at least thats my theory.

My international speeds are still very good, as of tonight as Gordon pointed out, it looks like there is severe congestion locally on Telkom's network. Great. So clearly they haven't been using the exorbitant installation and line fees we've been paying them over the years to maintain and upgrade their network, but been pocketing it. Anyone shocked?

My international latency is actually half of what I'm getting locally at the moment.

Seems things are much better this morning (8.30am on Fri 7th). No idea what they did (haven't been told anything...)

Well after spending about 40min over the phone with mweb my account went from 40kbps to 400... WTF... They say no they don't know what the prob is.. But it was fixed :) I see it's slow again.. Yesterday this time it was still going at 400kbps.. till around 11am. They are screwing us guys...

My bro has a 384k line and he's getting what I'm getting.. WTF.. I'm not gonna keep this line if this is what's going to happen. Astraweb doesn't help coz they DO shape it a lot (according to IT Desk at mweb) It might be secure but they still shape the stuff. My Telkom account moves 24/7 but yea that's 2 expensive to run for a full month.

The one thing I can't get right is my MTU. It's 1492 and mweb said I should put it to 1452 because they have noticed an increase in speed for this. But my billion router doesn't want to save this.. WTF.. How can I change this?

When I change it and say Apply it refreshes the screen and defaults back to 1492 :(

You can test MTU sizes like this

ping -f -l 1500 ip-address

-f switch is not to fragment, -l sets the MTU size. Start at 1500 and you should get 'Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set' which means the MTU is too large. Start reducing your MTU value until the ping goes through. Viola, that is the correct value!

I did a tracert www.mweb.co.za and it didn't actually resolve. It stopped at something like 196.25.55.xxx (it was a tascali telkom server and mweb said that might be my prob.)

I'll test your command when I get home later today :)

ps: But why doesn't my router save the MTU that I put in?

Interesting experiment, but the MWeb representave said to use 1492 for MTU.

Terminology error: The tracert resolved (otherwise it would not give an IP address), but it did not terminate, because the hosting site has turned off responding to ping packets.

Try another website: smtp.mweb.co.za, www.mweb.com, etc.

Others did resolve. but www.mweb.co.za didn't. It had 15 hops to that tascali server of telkom and then just timed out the other 15 hops??

Mweb guy said to use 1452... 52... not 92 :) But my router doesn't wanna save the MTU to what I say it should be. It defaults back.. :(

I do not know why did will not work! Sounds very low to me anyhow. Maybe make sure the size is a factor of 8.

The linux command for those that wanna know is 'ping -M do -s 1500 pingme.com'

haha... Gordon_R... So you think I just slept and woke up... thinking I'm gonna bsht MyBB peeps... Mweb said I should lower it. I don't even know what it does but all I know is my line sucks a lot of the time.

I know I changed this with regedit when I did VPN's coz it makes the connection more secure (this was told to me.. not 100% sure if it's true)

Phone mweb and find out from them :D

Believe whatevr you want. This is what the MWeb representative posted on the Official Q&A thread:

Hi SabreWolfy,

We are continuing to investgate the symptom. As per my PM have you verified that your PPPoE connection (on your router) is running the standard ADSL mtu of 1492 ? It should be default, however if changed to some other value it may cause sub-optimal results.

...Added to which I reckon they're having to shape like crazy to ensure that the DSTV "On Demand" service works...

It doesn't... trust me it doesn't work at all. Rather watch your shizz on blinkx.com.

Just canceled my mweb account after I signed up 2 days ago. They must maybe think of giving people a week testing period where they then only bill you for the data that you used if you cancel within a week. I now sit with a afrihost uncapped account, semi useless, and a mweb account that is completely useless. Thanks to all whom point out that mweb is the best. They clearly are not. The difference between afrihost and mweb is afrihost only starts to limit your speed after certain amount of bandwith used, and mweb screw you right from day 1. Downloads are never more than 384KB speeds! And no, not torrents or news servers, just plain http downloads from all over the world.

MTU

Hi All,

For clarity, let me re-itterate the correct MTU size for the MWEB network is 1492. This only needs to be set on the device creating the PPPoE connection to our network e.g. your ADSL router. Any value high or lower is likely to cause packet fragmentation leading to degraded performance.

Not sure if there was some misunderstanding, but 1452 is the correct value for the TCP MSS (maximum segment size) on the connecting PPPoE device, which should always be MTU minus 40 (i.e. 1492 - 40 = 1452). On most consumer orientated devices the TCP MSS is not setable as it will usually be altered automatically to match the MTU less 40 (tho there may be a setting like 'clamp MSS' which should always be enabled).

There is one exception; if you are running a router/firewall device behind the Cisco router that is bundled with our Business ADSL package. In this scenario it is recommended that you do not force MTU or rewrite MSS, rather let the Cisco handle it. If you must re-write MSS, ensure its 1352 or lower.

MWB.

I've done 45GB so far this month on casual downloads on MWEB. I guess you're just unlucky.

What line did you get 45gb? 384?

4 Mbit. However, I don't download through the night or during the day. Last month doing the same I did 235GB which just shows you how fast MWEB is. On average for me the speeds have been close to 400KB/sec.
