MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

Mweb have been very clear in my opinion, anything that negatively impacts the network during the day will be throttled/shaped. Now people are trying to get clever and find ways around it like http nzb's and downstorm type services, those will be shaped/throttled during office hours. Deal with it or move to another uncapped solution.

For me i care about the total i download not the speed.

We should make it a policy not to talk openly about ways around the heavy shaping. MWeb is just going to close any gaps to save a buck.

Do you think are blind? Do you think mweb cannot see what high usage traffic is being used? They can save a buck if they want to :D. 140gb thus far pleases me big time for 539 bucks :D. Might get 170gb this month, 3 bucks a gb pleases me.

Technically speaking browsing is downloading too, its just that most web pages are about 300kb~1.5mb in total. Same goes for streaming videos, although they can go up to 30mb. But in practice I agree with you, short bursts of download should be fast, like getting a webpage with all its content objects, or streaming a clip to your PC. Larger streams of traffic, like multi gigabyte transfers from the same source or P2P traffic should be shaped only if is starts to affect other users on the network.

Ok - download abusing :)

Cause trying to download the Youtube database is also abuse.

No what i mean is mweb can see where piraters are operating surely?

I mean if they check easynews cruising at 400 kb/s on say 500 people's connections surely they know it is not the same as some oke watching youporn :D.

Consistent maxing of the line that would cause mweb hassles and only piraters can cause that to happen i would imagine?

Trying to download a Windows update during off peak hours (after hours) is not network abuse and I doubt it is causing the network to fall apart

I've never had a problem with Windows updates... I've actually never had a problem with any downloads that can be considered "from legitimate sources".

Let's start of by saying I am a NOOB when it comes to configuring my router. I recently updated the firmware om my D-Link 2500U Router. After the update I got 4 new settings that I have no idea what to set it too.

Any suggestions what this should be when using a MWEB 4MB uncapped ADSL account or is this not ISP dependent.

LCP echo interval(seconds):
IP fragmentation low threshold:
IP fragmentation high threshold:
IP fragmentation time(seconds):

For you gurus out there be gentle please :)

Any feedback would be appreciated

What version firmware do you have? 1.56 from the Russian FTP site?
I have the same router but never saw those options. Currently I have my wireless router (Linksys WRT54GS) dial the connection while the D-Link is just running in bridge mode.

Yes I have the 1.56 from the Russian site. It is on the page where you specify the account and MTU. Just under the tick "Keep PPP connection alive"

So this is my problem. It wants me to select something when setting up a new connection. My way past this was importing my configuration file I exported before the firmware upgrade. The defaults are all 0 for now but when you click next it prompts you to select a value greater than 0.

So basically everything is working I just wanted to know if this would make any differences in speed and what good settings would be.

I guess : If it ain't broken don't fix it :)

Right, I've noticed all the complaints about the normal SHAPED Mweb accounts, and I'm already on it myself.

So far, I've been happy with it, although download speeds and latency is less than desirable.

My question is, are the UNSHAPED accounts worth spending money for? (I'll be getting only the 384 account for now). I want low latency on my connection and the ability to run torrents without worries (when the need arises).

In short - Are the more expensive, UNSHAPED accounts giving issues? Or are they working as advertised?

All I can say. I had an Afrihost account for 3 days, Openweb account for the rest April. And cancelled both.

MWEB by far the best of the 3. I have had some issues but in general I am happy with the account. The support is sometimes a bit slow. Basically from my experiences IS backbone is taking strain so any account that is on the IS backbone I will stay away from.

We just cancelled our 100GB Business fiber connection from IS @R5500 per month and replaced it with a MWEB home user account @ R539 that out performs it by far.

Not sure if this answers your question at all.

I think he is asking about the uncapped UNshaped accounts, not the uncapped shaped ones. The R539 account you quote is the 4Mb/s uncapped shaped one, I'm guessing?
