Just wondering if its normal for torrents to run at max 5kBs around this time, i get 20kB/s every morning at 1 am, not complaining just asking

Hi schumi,

Filesharing speeds are not predetermined. The speed you get is determined by the amount of users utilizing the available filesharing bandwidth. During the evening the shapers are more relaxed and the maximum bandwidth is made available

Whats up with MWEB tonight? 10min to download a 2.7MB attachment from gmail.

Ok Kosmik that sounds like something we should look at. I have Bad Company 2 installed here - I will run some tests myself and see if we can replicate your experience and get to grips with what's causing it. Can you inbox me your contact details and some idea of your availability in case I need to get you to assist with some testing?

Thanks

Hi Kosmik

I just tested this now and didn't experience what you're describing, The initial EA authentication, loading the server list and joining an SGS server all went smoothly and gameplay seemed pretty responsive - although I'm sure there is room for improvement on the latency, but that's something we will have to make peace with for now.

Can you give me some idea of how frequently you encounter the issue? In the meantime I have taken a wireshark capture for our network engineers to analyze so that we can look at the traffic prioritization and will do some further testing from my side.

Kind Regards
Will

Hi xrapidx,

There's no confirmed outages from our side that I'm aware of tonight. If this is an on going problem please PM me your details and I can have this checked

Hi Will,

Thanks for the response but as I mentioned, it's only when you totally kill the p2p on the network ie: when you have a link down and we are on redundant bandwidth. International browsing still works but the problem persists as I've explained then. Otherwise normally I have no issue. I could understand if international connectivity was lost but as I say, browsing works fine just the games server list/query seems to get nailed.

I hope there's no downtime soon to prove the matter but when it happens again, I'll remember to post/pm again.

@Kosmik aah Ok sorry I must have misunderstood your OP - anyway I will carry on with this exercise as I'd like to see if there is any possibility for us to tweak the priority on the traffic and if it has any impact on the latency. As a matter of interest can you tell me what line speed you are you on, what latency do you get to SGS and roughly where you are geographically?

I'm on the 4Meg shaped account. Pinging games.saix.net my latency is avg below 30ms, my ingame is easily normally below 50ms, hovers around 30-35 I think. Located in Durban.

It's only the server list query that seems affected when it happens. I think you mentioned wireshark? I'd monitor the packets, just after logging in and enter SGS in the search bar and click search. It's when that requst is sent that I would get the failed to connect message and have to relog in, which succeeds but when searching again the same message comes up and repeats.

Ever since Telkom started upgrading my exchange, my HTTP speeds have been less than optimal. This week I've finally been moved over to a 6Mbps link. Last night before I went to bed I decided to purchase and download a few DLC's from BioWare for ME2, and my traffic graph shows that I almost touched a full 500kB/s, not dropping below 450kB/s. Happy to finally have my line speeds back.

Oi I can only dream of the day that happens, my 4 mbps line was doing a full 12 kBps last night, it's soo frustrating. Reminds me I have to go shout at Telkom again...

Please read my post BC2 on mweb

The issue does not occur all the time, but seems to be dependent on network load somewhere. The fact that when I switch to using another isp to route my traffic for BC2 and the issue immediately goes away, implies the issue has something to do with mweb. I used wireshark myself to determine where BC2 is sending its packets, so I could route them through a different pppoe connection with a different isp and then my problems went away. It is rather annoying that I pay mweb for uncapped internet access and I have to use a different isp for some of my internet access, as something to do with mweb prevents from having playable local gaming every day.

I notice the time you posted above was 01-09-2010 08:37 PM when you said you had just done your test. Please test at around 1pm on a weekday, when the network load is highest with everyone on lunch doing a little browsing at the same time on their unshaped business accounts. Lunch time on weekdays is the time I have had to most problems connecting to the saix BC2 servers. The problem does not occur everyday, which is what leads me to believe it is network load dependent, as the BC server browser list sometimes returns with the list in 20 seconds, other times it times out after longer and BC2 requires me to log in again to the EA master server. In the evenings its takes only a few seconds to return the server browser list, and when I route my BC2 traffic through webafrica the server browser list is returned almost immediately.

The two servers I noticed BC2 communicating to (captured with wireshark) are 159.153.235.12 and 159.153.235.4. For the past few months I've been playing BC2 almost every day, during the day and the evenings, so I have a good idea of the issues with BC2 on the mweb network.

I am on 4mb mweb shaped account in Cape Town. I use @dslmweb.co.za for my login to my mweb adsl account. You cannot do a normal windows ping to the saix games servers as saix firewalls out pings requests to their game servers.

@pmurgs Thanks for the feedback, this will definitely help us to get a better understanding of the problem, what sort of in game ping are you getting on average?

Usually 80 to 120 on mweb in the evenings, which is very playable. It's only when it goes above 300 that you start to notice you have a bad ping in game, as you start running into walls and missing the door way, or the game server pulls you back outside a building a couple seconds after you entered the building (according to your BC2 client). Evenings BC2 is very playable, it's just during the day on weekdays, especially around lunch time or 4 to 5:30pm (when people are winding down at work and starting to do more browsing before heading home) that I can notice BC2 can become not pleasant to play due to lag, or I can loose my connection to EA and be kicked from the game.

@The Mweb guys

For me its always a toss up when choosing an account, monthly usage limits (specifically no usage limit =) ) vs. bandwidth quality for gaming, finding an account with both is often like trying to find a needle in a haystack. So big thanks for looking at the quality of gaming on these accounts.

Your ping should be stable. Mine has been quite stable until Telkom did some maintenance.

It's very hard to play if your ping shoots up and down. On a 384 kb/s line, it should remain in the 40ms bracket.

Thanks for the feedback gents and a big thank you @pmurgs from our network engineers for the investigation done from your side. I've been informed that there are some traffic tweaks being implemented late this afternoon which we hope will improve the local gaming experience so I'd be very interested to hear what the feedback is over the next few days.

On a slightly different note, what's the general consensus on the line speed requirement for BC2 - is the game playable on 384k?

I can't really comment on daytime pings myself as I'm never home then except on weekends. I've only had the issue during the redundancy periods.

On the box the game says 512 is minimum.

On another subject. Any more news on the IPC upgrades. This month is my last month with mweb. If the IPC upgrades bring back performance to what it was 3months ago I'll gladly stay with MWEB.

Few guys in our clan play on a 384k line, they seem to be happy but I think the game does officialy require 512k min.
