We still seem to have customers that are having problems with their lines dropping regularly, variable speeds etc. Based on what we can see on various online forums, most ISP’s seem to be battling with the same issues. We’re happy that the changes we made over the weekend have given us plenty of capacity on our IPC nodes and international bandwidth. (We are aware of some latency issues for users trying to access gaming servers hosted on the SAIX network and we’re busy trying to find a solution for that.)

Telkom have not reported on a serious outage in Gauteng on a number of exchanges over the weekend, but have subsequently confirmed to us verbally that there was a problem. We’re seeing something similar in Cape Town for customers in the Southern Suburbs but as yet, no official confirmation from Telkom either. We’ll keep investigating until we get them to resolve this.

Regards
Mweb Operations

FYI...MWEB'S AUP
12.2 You will not use the ADSL Service, directly or indirectly, in a way that:
12.2.8 in MWEB’s sole discretion constitutes abuse of the ADSL Service or of MWEB’s systems. I ping you, you cut me off? Hmm?

Lovely bit of legal contradiction. Have you not heard of the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008? ... "to give effect to internationally accepted consumer rights" ...

Well, let's be honest, it's not in their best interests to do away with customers now is it?

They have a much bigger motivation to keep customers and provide a good service, which I am sure they are trying to do.

That would make business sense, yes. However. I still don't like the September 2010 AUP being in contradiction to the October 2010 effect of the CPA. Telcos are going to have to change their terms and conditions as they have fleeced us for far to long (perhaps not MWEB, but most certainly Telkom have and are doing so. The point I wish to make is let's use the new legislation to enforce our rights.

I have been staring at my NZB downloader for 2 days now - no connection can be made to the MWEB News server
Sad days indeed - kinda considering supporting Telkom at this rate

having problem with mweb business uncapped

my line keeps half dropping since saturday
what i mean by half dropping is that the router doesn't lose the connection and the PC's don't realize the web is down

but outlook loses the connection to the exchange for the 2 seconds when it drops
and if there is a download happening it will return a error

along with that the download speeds seem to vary a lot - one minute it would be a nice 200KB - 300KB and the next it would be 10KB - 50KB

have called and reported it but my faith in the business support center died a long time ago when during the world cup i had to threaten to go down to the news room at the world cup opening ceremonies to get my internet back up at the office

Hi Argus

Please PM me your MWEB account details and I will get someone to contact you.

Kind regards

My speeds are really not great. here are the results for the last 24 hrs:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11845285/snapshot2.png

I gave up on downloading a torrent around 7 and started downloading Ubuntu 10.10 (http download) which failed (see the nice white space :( ) I restarted it around one getting really crappy speeds for that time of the morning on a HTTP download. This is gay

After my little rant here last night.. my speeds improved a lot

around 9:15pm, its almost as MWeb turned off the shaping for a while and then it settled around 250k when they turned it back on.

So I was happy from that point.

Mweb please keep this up.

I also have the same problem - no connection the news.mweb.co.za form Table View, Cape Town, for 2 days now.
Can ping the server, but even Outlook Express News reader fails to connect or download newsgroup listing.

What's up, MWEB???

Have now tried (at recommendation of a friend) to connect to news.just4today.net, and that connects, but very slowly - only about 2 - 3kBps.

I have a 384kb ADSL line. Just when is TELKOM going to upgrade us 384kb users to at least 1MB? Pathetic!

For the first the in weeks I was able to download at 400kB/s this morning, what a relieve, I am chuffed!
Well Done MWEB, keep it up please....

the shaping looks alot more stringent now ... can't download anything during the day and at night although speeds pick up it still half of my line speed... :(

Hi scorpioso69

There are occasions when the capacity of our news servers comes under strain. What we do know though is that the function of newsgroups has been replaced by far more effective services like forums and p2p. In reality it’s only a very small number of users who access our news servers and it doesn’t make sense for us to spend more money on an outdated technology, when there is a viable alternative readily available.

Kind regards

LOL - news servers are so lame and 70's with their 7bit UU-encoded 64k mime chunks. They bloat data by 30%.
Down with the news servers !!

Only did 700 MB overnight from Astraweb on a 4 Mbps line/account, so time to consider canceling ...

@MWEB - that confuses me, do you prefer customers using p2p then? I always thought newsgroups were less strain on the network - and that's why I pay for and use the.

P2P is more manageable for them. I think its good that they shape us in order to prevent us from ruining it for everyone.
