Expected behaviour, what about in the evenings?

Yesterday evening I get home at 1900, 4 eps queued on news.mweb are trickling along at 20KBs. An hour later, they are coming down at 350KBs.

2 international torrents were coming down at 20KBs after that.

I can deal with the inconsistencies as long as we are guaranteed NNTP is not shaped after hours, e.g., 2000-0600?

Cant compare on a 384 k line I get 25KB/s + 24/7

Doesn't sound right, reset your server settings and specify only 2 connections. And reboot your router as well.

Sounds DNS related. can you do a nslookup on other sites?

There are occasions when the capacity of our news servers comes under strain. What we do know though is that the function of newsgroups has been replaced by far more effective services like forums and p2p. In reality it’s only a very small number of users who access our news servers and it doesn’t make sense for us to spend more money on an outdated technology, when there is a viable alternative readily available.

Firstly, this doesn't make much sense. Obviously, if your servers are under strain then there are more than 'a very small number of users who access the news servers'?

Secondly, you made a promise that after the upgrades due to finish the past weekend, that access to the news servers would improve. Now you're telling us that that isn't the case, and not to expect much. Which is it?

Lastly, even if we're meant to be using p2p, I still get terrible speeds, none rising above 120kb/s on a 4Mb line.

Ya I received the same response from MWEB Ops on news server whereas the weekend of the upgrade he said that all would be well on Monday when the upgrade was done. To me that is a straight up lie. Also, how can Mweb refer us to other technology that is just as shaped as the news server and clogs international links? Mweb, make up your mind as to what you want us to use and then make it usable!

How about the general appalling state of http browsing/downloads? And local peering? Any news on those?

My STEAM download is rocketing along at 134k/sec, after hours. Local downloads peak at 200k/sec. Are we meant to just accept some vague blame-shifting towards Telkom as an answer and live with it ?

It's pretty obvious that Mweb cannot shift the blame onto Telkom or anyone else for that matter.
We have shown the proof that Mweb is entirely to blame.
It is as simple as connecting to mweb and testing download speeds and then connecting to another ISP like webafrica and testing download speeds.
Compare the 2 tests and there we have it!

I posted the below test last night just before 11PM and that should be enough proof that the blame lies entirely with Mweb.

I just did a quick test connecting to cheapernews news server using my 4mb uncapped account from mweb and my standard capped account from webafrica.
PS: I am syncing at 8mb.

Download speed using alt-binz on Webafrica = 838 kB/s
Download speed using alt-binz on mweb = 85 kB/s ~ 92 kB/s

Agreed - I've given up. I wrote such a long rant on here, clicked 'reply' and the fkn thing timed out and I lost my whole post - fricken lost it!!!!!! I'll start again, this time with more venom - excuse me, I but I need to rant!
RS & HF premium speeds down to below 20kb/s speeds. Speedtest.net barely working - other files and http crawling - I'm so fkn fedup with this **** now. Tomorrow afternoon will be 2 weeks that this has been going on. Only reason I didn't give calendar notice on 01 October was because Mweb on these forums promised everything would come right by end of last weekend - this HAS NOT materialised and now I'm stuck with this fkn ISP for another month after the end of this month - utter horse **** - R540.00 per month on top of my 4mb line rental for speeds that are comparable to speeds I had in 2001 - I'm sorry, that's just not on!!!!!
