MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

Well last night my connection only got unshaped from around 2am to 5am, soon this will be an "uncapped surf as much as you like" account :p That I can get for much cheaper than R300.00;)

Excellent connection over the weekend! I took a long weekend and left lots of torrents to see how much I could get done, the results are brilliant.

The shaping has nothing to do with network load or being dynamic. They simply throttle it to fix rates. My day speed is fixed on 10kbps and increase to 80 after 6 like clock work and to full line speed at midnight.

I don't care what whom say, two months of data logs can't be wrong...

Agree fully

10k during the day, 6pm goes to 50k, 11pm 140k, 1am full speed, 6am 100k, 7am 50k.. 8am 10k ..... Over the weekends... Full speed from 1am to 8am, the rest around 160k, (but this last weekend around 100k)

I have almost 6 months worth of data

Spot on - its throttling - none of this 'dynamic' shaping bs. - my speeds are now almost identical to what you've posted

A lot of these vague problems could be resolved if they just made a "name and shame" list of the extra shaped clients. That way we can know if we are getting "special" treatment. But of course that will also make it easier for us to know if somehow someone from inside MWEB is doing the currupt thing and somehow taking advantage of our accounts.

And before anyone thinks tin-foil hat thoughts you KNOW curruption is typical these days, its wierd if it doesnt happen. Just think back to the unencrypted account information that was leaked a while back, was probably from some employee that accidentilly emailed it to the wrong address.

Yeah I have been with MWeb from the start and my hourly usage stats are identical to that of the news server stats, no variations can be seen at all and I doubt everyone usues the exact same amount each day/each hour/every month.... Although this past week I can now notice a drop in about 50k from the norm so their methods are indeed dynamic.... Dynamic being when related to when someone feels like dropping the throttling slider even lower that is! :P

Now that you guys mention it - the amount that I have been able to get for the past 3 months has been scary similar - throttling it is.
OpenWeb it is then.

I am not really complaining about the shaping and how the times work...

At least I can plan my downloads... I know what the speeds are going to be like and I plan around my lines performance. I know I have a shaped account and thats what I pay for.

Mweb I like the timetable approach to the shaping..

Hi All

We’ve made very good progress and the only major service provider / network where we do not have a peering agreement in place is with SAIX (Telkom). We’re still in discussions with them and hopefully we’ll find a solution in the near future. Thank you once again for your support and patience during this time, it will ultimately be for the benefit of all Internet users in SA.

Regards
MWEB

I'm also fine with it - would be nice if MWEB were honest enough to admit it.

Although, a week and a half ago - I wasn't able to go over 100KB/s - ever... and that went on for weeks- hence my reason for cancelling. Only 8 more days left, then I'm off to Openweb.

Yes indeed, and for that we have to thank MWEB :)

was downloading the esquire price list last night (2.4mb) the ave speed was 4 to 5 kbps ... this was at 9pm
the speeds are terrible latetly.

low downloads speeds, all the time.

I currently have 4mbps uncapped with mweb, and am very disappointed, infact it feels like 384kbps.
Torrent speeds are at 50kbps in total at any given time, even after hours.
http downloads are the same, I feel as though my connection is limited somehow.

If Mweb operations or anyone can help me on this It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

Some feedback on my problem with a mostly dead newsgroup connection & terrible torrent performance:

I contacted MWEB Operations via PM about 4 days ago & the problem appears to have been resolved since yesterday.

Hi MWEB Operations,

Ok, the performance of the product is much improved in terms of torrents & newsgroups since whatever you apparently did yesterday. Newsgroups are slow during the day, but at least they now connect & torrents are better than they've been in ages. I hope that it lasts.

Thank you.

Regards,

SSung

Will have see how things go in the long run, but it at least seems as if MWEB are prepared to work with their customers. All tentative, of course.

Just me or is streaming really belly up atm, taking ages to buffer.

So, free peering is cool right? Please could some explain to me how the agreements are translating into savings for me, right now? Or have I missed the point? It is 'we have open peering because its cool' or 'we have open peering because its saving our customers money'?

Yes its uncomfortable right now but in the long term it will probably be better for everyone, say what you will at least MWEB takes the risks other ISP's wont.

mweb == disappointment

this peering thing looks like they will save costs, so lets see if it gets passed on to us

Stuck at dead 40 kbps. I would like to think open peering is a good way.

What is alarming is the way that they have gone about it. They basically bullied everyone into it. Reminds me of the old Microsoft, pre-antitrust days.

I don't care what the positives for end useres might be, but this behaviour from a dominate player is never good. No one whould accept it from Telkom, why do they accept it from Mweb?
