Can I be the first to post a tracert? For a CT user going via SAT-3 makes a HUGE difference compared to SEACOM! My round-trip (ping) times to London are 90ms faster (160ms vs 250ms), which is quite significant IMO...

Torrents are flying, can connect to Astraweb again. So far, I am happy after th upgrade. Lets hope it stays this way, please Mweb?

Does any one else have lousy throughput with only one http connection, for example streaming and stuff? I can get great speeds with segmented downloading, but seem to get 18kb/s with every site (including my own server) if I have a single http connection. Obviously not so good if you're trying to do any kind of stream. Not sufficient for streaming decent quality music even...

nope, all fine here at GP, PTA.

Well I guess that's good news, hopefully its something temporary then. I'm in Cape Town, so wonder if its related to the network upgrades. I've only been on 4meg uncapped for a few days now so still not sure what to expect at various times of the day...

Any AeroVPS users here who are experiencing diminished performance after the MWEB "upgrade"?

Holy crap, my latency is also excellent to the UK now. Unfortunately throughput is not so good.

MWEB FTW

10 points for this, has made a difference on my side... I'm hesitant to congratulate Mweb though as every time I do my speeds suddenly plunge... anyways, congrats and thanks for the christmas cheer!

That's really very hard to gauge MFour, but in terms of NNTP something which we have wanted to let all of you know - and this is a good an opportunity as any to bring it up - is that we have increased the capacity of our own news servers over the last week. We've added servers to both the Cape Town and JHB clusters and have increased the connection limit to 3. unfortunately I still don't think you will see performance on these servers that is comparable to other types of P2P, but we hope this will go some way towards bringing a little Xmas cheer to the die hard news users :)

Kind Regards
Will

Left my router in the fridge for 5 minutes, now throughput is 10x better (literally).

I really hope that's a coincidence although it felt at melting point. Hmmm.

Video from UStream is coming in at 150kbps as opposed to 20kbps.

Ok, as insane as this sounds, it heated up and my speed on a single connection dropped down, freezer for 10 minutes and its fast again. Now have my router on the floor with a fan pointed at it and throughput is stable for streaming. Router is a Netgear DG834.

wtf...

LOL. Only in SA will you get people so desperate for a good connection that they put their router's in the fridge :D

Wait till you see my wireless setup. complete with Miller boxes and some weight loss bottles that I got from the bin.

:D I'm thinking I should invest in a bar fridge. Beer and a better connection, win win!

lmfao you guys are crazy, I hope whatever you guys are trying works though lol

mmm... Just me or has speeds gone back to what they used to be? this morning I was hitting 100kB/s on torrents and now its gone back to 20ish streaming is also slow.

Edit: Lemme go try putting my router in the fridge >.<
Edit: Q_Q that never worked, youtube vids are still taking ages to load.

wtf...

I have the exact same router and considering giving this a go. O.O

"Welcome to South Africa! Want broadband speeds? Throw your router in the fridge :D"
w...t...f?

Exactly! Turned the South African ADSL internet users into 'cooling down your router by placing it into the fridge/freezer' citizens.

It is working fairly consistently for me though! I've actually ordered a small fan and I'm going to hack a hole in the side of my router casing and fit that in there somehow. Also going to try find an old copper heatsink to attach to whatever chip feels hottest when I open the router up :D
