My news server downloads have been running between 7.5kbps - 12kbps for the past 4 months... I used to get full line speed downloads (±38kbps) after hours but no more. im on MWEB uncapped 384, line with Telkom. Any ideas?

Hi Nasa

Please send me a private message with your MWEB account details and I will investigate this for you. Also please advise me if you are having this problem with all downloads and if browsing is also slow.

Regards,

Hi,

I am having quite a problem with Steam downloads, current download rate is 6kB/s, though when testing another download via a website I got a decent 400kB/s on an Uncapped 4MB line.
Is Steam being heavily shaped or something or that normal :(

steam running my line max all the time, frigging updates for games everyday, so don't think it get shaped

Hi Carnajo
Steam is not shaped, are you perhaps running any other downloads while doing the steam download.
Please inbox me a netstat as this will help with my investigation.

Had nothing running consciously in the background. Restarted Steam and now it seems like it is at full speed (470 KB/S); perhaps anti-virus or windows was downloading an update or something.

Apologies for the false alarm and thanks for the speedy reply.

Thank you for the feedback and keep me informed.

In hindsight I don't think it was a background download as a test download was at full speed, unless there was an issue with priority (e.g. AVG gave browser priority but not steam app), nonetheless it is fine now :wtf:

Good Afternoon everyone

Please take note of the following mailer that was sent out earlier regarding network changes taking place tonight:

Dear MWEB Customer

Over the last few weeks we have been preparing to add additional international bandwidth to our network by establishing a link to the SAT-3 undersea cable, terminating in Cape Town. We are now ready to finalize this change, which means that maintenance work needs to take place this weekend starting at midnight on Friday 17 December 2010 through until 02h00 on Saturday morning.

We will be routing all our Cape Town traffic via JHB and Seacom, which means that all Peer 2 Peer traffic will be reduced during this time. Once the upgrade is completed our Cape Town subscribers will be moved back to the Cape Town IPC network and SAT-3 will be brought online.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Kind regards
MWEB Operations

Thanks Will, quick question. Will this have any impact on P2P/NNTP performance once completed, especially in the Cape Town area?

After the update, this should have a positive impact on our entire network.

That's really very hard to gauge MFour, but in terms of NNTP something which we have wanted to let all of you know - and this is a good an opportunity as any to bring it up - is that we have increased the capacity of our own news servers over the last week. We've added servers to both the Cape Town and JHB clusters and have increased the connection limit to 3. unfortunately I still don't think you will see performance on these servers that is comparable to other types of P2P, but we hope this will go some way towards bringing a little Xmas cheer to the die hard news users :)

Kind Regards
Will

Can only be good news. Will this result in a more relaxed shaping profile of NNTP?

Not at this stage greg.

In terms of traffic that's classed as P2P there isnt really any differentiation between protocols, they all share use of the same finite pool of bandwidth.

While in theory this shouldn't mean that one protocol takes preference over another it does seem to be the case that the more aggressive protocols like bitorrent seem to come out on top.

Part of the reasoning behind limiting the overall number of simultaneous P2P sessions per customer was to create a more level playing field.

We will continue to monitor this and it's something that we'll certainly take into consideration as we continue to refine the network in the new year.

Please do something with torrent shaping. My word it is terribly shaped... my NNTP is 100% on my little 384k chugger.

After the update, this should have a positive impact on our entire network.

MWEB OP and Will: This is the same excuse we were given last time MWEB "upgraded" their network. We keep getting told "the upgrade will have a positive impact on our entire network", yet there always seems to be another problem with mweb and why speeds are not constant. Last time there was an upgrade for the additional 1 Gbps that you enabled. However, we still are experiencing problems. There has been more problems and more downtimes then positive internet experience with mweb. Please explain to me why there is always another excuse, which, in any case, doesnt solve most of the problems. All this upgrade means for us folks here, is that come friday/saturday, our internet is going to become #@$! again. This is another weekend that goes by we dont have a good fully functional internet and yet we still pay the full price.

People say this is great news, but people forget that in the end, this upgrade means nothing for us, since we are still shaped to death.

There comes a time when you need to decide that you've been unhappy with a product for long enough that it is clearly not the product for you and move on. If you have a problem with shaping, maybe you should move to an unshaped product.

And maybe you should pay for it? seeing as you think money grows on trees....
