Hi ForSure

MWEB does not have any ADSL products that utilize throttling. We offer shaped products that give high priority to the most commonly used internet services.

Kind regards
MWEB Guy

Define commonly used please on unshaped.

indeed. news @ 0 KB/s .

I would appreciate MWEB just admitting to there being problems instead of BS'ing us... we are not idiots on this forum, I mean really.

Investigating?

I deal with networks all day - I know when you put limits on certain types of ports etc - please don't try BS IT guys - you end up looking so stupid!

Hi Everyone

Firstly StNick thanks for you input and analysis. I really would like to spend some time discussing this with you in more detail and just to address some of the assumptions you've made in your theory, which are understandable as you don't have a full picture of the network architecture. Right now though I would actually like to focus on the solutions and try and get everyone back on the same page and with a little more understanding of where we are now.

The last few weeks have been very challenging and I'm sure very frustrating from the point of view of those posting here. I'd also like to apologize if the we've missed any posts in the last few days, but in all fairness when you guys get out the flamethrowers it doesn't really help us to assist you and while I appreciate that network issues cause frustration I'd really like to stress that we are here to try and help and if everyone keeps their tempers in check and just explains the problem with as much detail as possible it really does help to move the situation forward faster.

On that note I'd like to thank everyone who did submit the data sheet to us yesterday and this morning, those were very helpful and we'll definitely improve on this and use it more in the future so thanks again to vaalpens for the great suggestion.

MWEB Guy will also be following up with everyone who submitted their data over the next while to see if your situation has improved.

Moving forward as I said yesterday the traffic optimizations which were put in place yesterday in Cape Town have been tested extensively and we're very happy with the results to the extent that we have decided to move ahead with rolling this out to the JHB network tomorrow morning at 6am. One thing I am still not happy with right now is the performance of the MWEB news server, which has been unresponsive to the increased priority we have assigned to the traffic so we are now looking elsewhere for the problem. I will keep you guys posted on progress in this area and I can assure you it is getting a lot of attention.

I'd also just like to stress that there are no silver bullets to anyone doing p2p on a shaped product so please don't be disappointed when your torrents aren't flying tomorrow.

We have, I believe, moved to a much better way of doing things now in terms of the manner in which assurance levels and traffic prioritization is allocated.
It should allow firstly for a much better QoS experience on a personal level (in the sense that your skype, or video streaming traffic will take priority over your torrents) and also will allow p2p traffic to make more efficient use of the spare capacity at odd times of the day (so while you may find that at certain times of the day torrents do get quite slow we believe that over the long haul it will balance out.)

Thanks again to everyone for your patience and understanding and your valuable input in the last few difficult weeks.

Kind Regards
Will

Eish! I feel for the MWeb reps here - don't know if they are high up enough on the totem pole to convey both the depth of frustration and breadth of awareness of the problem on this forum. Unfortunately, management, while making technical decisions (disguised as business decisions) rarely stick around to experience the implications that flow from those decisions...and the techs who implement the 'policies' are usually far removed from the techs who are at the receiving end of the complaints.

The ONLY way to get this problem looked at seriously is for an external person who has credibility with MWeb senior management to bring it to their attention.

We can bleat, squeal, insult, ridicule and threaten to leave (or even leave) as much as we like - it's lost in the overall stats that management get to see and therefore won't get attention.

and like most of you, I don't mind the P2P shaping - I do mind the poor performance on http, YouTube, gmail (occasionally) - I pay for a 4 meg line - can I please have 4 meg performance for the basic services (email, browsing, youtube, patch updates, etc).

Thx Will,

As long as my HTTP downloads are back to normal I will be very happy.

Why then, if I download a DRIVER from the NVidia website do I as a 4096 (2048 synch)
Get 15KB/sec ?
This is over a "most commonly used internet service" as you call it
>>> HTTP.
Why the slowdown ?

Unless 2048/8 (minus overhead IP transit) = 15KB/sec

Well then... unshaped people do have issues...

Certainly, if i was paying that money, i would also complain bitterly.

To the MWEB reps etc, I speak for myself here, but I think majority of us really do appreciate what you guys do on here. Think about it this way, we could have ZERO reps on here? Then we'd be really screwed :/ Like I was with Screamer Telecoms. Man that was frustrating!

Thanks for the input, I think as long as there IS communication then everyone will be a lot happier.

Will, is their currently a problem that is affecting news ? As seen above, myself and others have 0 throughput to news (giga) .

again no news server access..

The 3rd day in a row...... come on mweb..

Mweb guy I sent you a pm.

Thanks for the sympathy AfricanTech - I'm actually off to do some therapy shopping and get that PS3 I've been promising myself for a while :D I'd like to correct you in terms of the awareness of senior management and our technical teams though.

We really don't suffer from big suit or the hidden propeller head syndromes here and my own role and involvement in these matters does extend way beyond just answering questions on this forum (although you wouldn't say so considering how much of my time you guys take up :D). I actually spent some time this morning discussing the feedback here and the test results from yesterdays changes with Rudi and when I say things like "I'm working closely with the network team to address your concerns" it doesn't mean. I've sent them an email, it means I'm up and down between the lead engineer's desk and our test bench getting my hands dirty and pointing out things which I know you guys are not going to be happy about.

Things don't always go smoothly in a complex network environment like this and yes sometimes there are lessons we have to learn from the things that go wrong, but one thing I can assure you is that everyone here from the top to the bottom is 200% committed to trying to give you guys the best service possible and no-one shies away from the situation when things go wrong.

Kind Regards
Will

Well I'll be doing some serious testing tomorrow morning after 6AM. Hopefully things will improve after that because right now I'm barely averaging 9KB/s from filesonic on 384K unshaped so I'm kinda pissed. I might as well be using old-school dial-up at this point.

If you are getting full speed on HTTP you are lucky... there are lots of us on 4mb lines with 30kb/s download speeds...

Considering they were pathetic for about a month till this afternoon. What ever MWEB has done seems to have worked for me at least.

Don't get your hopes up, the new 1Mb er's are going to be wanting to test their new lines.

Telkom DSLAM/exchange congestion?

@MWEB, I have a 4Mbps uncapped MWEB account.

I've noticed that my 4Mbps ADSL (sync at 4Mbps, capable of 7.2Mbps) is fast (3.6Mbps) in the mornings and slow (0.2Mbps) in the afternoon/evenings.

I thought it was MWEB shaping, so I tried WebAfica (1GB, unshaped), FNBConnect (free 1GB) and a private company service.
They all exhibit the same problem, fast (3.6Mbps) in the mornings and slow (0.2Mbps) in the afternoon/evenings.

I suspect that the Telkom DSLAM/exchange is out of capacity.

Is there any way to conclusively prove that Telkom's infrastructure has a problem?
Is there a test that I can perform or ask to have done to pin-point the problem.

traceroute does not show the in between ATM/MPLS network.

Any advice would be welcome.
