MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

It looks as though there are still a few complaints coming in, and perhaps they are the result of a different problem.

But at 08h30, I can confirm that the problem that *I* have been experiencing over the past week with regard to individual connections being limited to 256kbps has been fixed. I am getting full speed from international HTTP this morning and it appears to be holding steady.

I suppose I should monitor throughout the day, but I'd still like to thank Will@MWEB for listening and taking action.

the uncapped 4mb product should be renamed to
"up to 4mb between 5am and 7am" any time after that it will be a "up to 1mb" product

akamai or whatever other excuses, ubuntu mirrors, nvidia updates, microsoft updates and installations, and all international stuff was working in April without any hiccups (seacom issues excluded)
Why should we bend over and accept that we are paying for a up to 1mb product on international downloads at the price of a 4mb product?

yep, like the posters above, during business hours it can be shaped, but after hours...?

Update
06h45 : both local and international downloads, including "akamai" whatever are running at full speed with multiple threads,
will report back again in 2 hours

I've got a similar problem, where 4Mbps ADSL only performs for a few hours in the early mornings, and is slows down in the afternoon/evening (0.2Mbps).

Business start using ADSL from 7/8am, and home/school users start 2/3pm.
There is a dramatic slowdown as the day goes on.

Even local traffic is slow during "prime time".

The problem, is that the afternoon/evening (Prime Time) is when I need to use the ADSL.

In my case switching ISPs from MWEB to WebAfrica and FNBConnect, did not improve the performance.

I suspect the Telkom DSLAM/Exchage is overloaded - probably more so with all the 1Mbps upgrades.

There is no easy way to get traffic volume/capacity stats from Telkom on the ATM/MPLS network, before it gets to the ISP.

I'm very pissed off, since I'm paying R1085pm for 4Mbps ADSL and getting 0.2Mbps.

I'm considering changing to Cell-C, with 4x5GB packages.

Moving to Cell-C is obviously a good thing for Telkom/ISP's since it will reduce the load on their network ;).
Will also reduce the load on Telkom/ISP's income :D

Agreed, I'll also give credit where its due... Windows 7 SP1 is coming down at 380KB/s, at 8:10 Ubuntu 10.10 downloaded at 290KB/s from Germany, yesterday it was coming down at 38KB/s. Whatever you did MWEB... its working for me.

/side note/ Daytime torrents are working up to 80KB/s; same as last month!
/need info/ Does MWEB use any caching of frequently fetched things? I don't think so, but surely thats an option? Instead of the whole subscriber base fetching a new copy of Windows 7 SP1?

Things seem better on my side as well. Lets keep fingers crossed and hope things stay this way.

Thanks MWEB for addressing the issue

System32, have you checked as of this morning?

Checked this morning, by 8:30am the speed was down to <0.2Mpbs (could hardly run speedtest).
Changed between MWEB (Uncapped) and Webafica (unshaped) and no improvement.

I called Telkom, and they admitted there is a DSLAM/Exchange capacity issue in my area (South Jhb).
This is the first time, that they've admitted this - previously, they rest my port - and generally wasted my time.

I've asked them to escalate the call that's been open since 7 May.
Called MWEB and asked them to put pressure on Telkom to upgrade the exchange/dslam.

I reminded Telkom+MWEB, they they could not afford to lose customers to Cell-C/MTN/Vodacom.

Hi Mweb

I have been patient for a very long time now with teething problems you guys may be experiencing going from good to bad to bad to good service levels interms of access speeds and browsing.
Last night was in my opinion the last straw in terms of acceptable usability that you guys are providing.

Problems that are happening that im having to use Webafrica for any real downloads and mmo gameplay now.

1. Install files are continually getting Corrupted when trying to download them , From sites like Intel (and MANY others over last few days)... i tried just click save as 9/10 times and it just corrupts.
(i then load up my Webafrica account and no problem at all downloads same process and works ) this has gotten worse not better of late - i noticed other people complaining about this , but its gone ignored.
2. I cant even watch streaming video content off sites i regularly browse for the latest reviews eg : gamespot and ign they used to work fine yet again i have to load up webafrica account to watch a 2 min stream game review vid from iether site.
3. CNN same crap different day.

guys seriously i appreciate the effort you doing and good cause for the community but one day working one day not is now getting pathetic leave things alone and customers wont complain ..stop altering the shaping rules cause its destroying any bit of browsing experience we having!.

I'm grateful Youtube is the fastest site on the net ..thank you Mweb...but its not the only site i want to visit and have the same speeds.

thank you

This will be my only post on this subject. Hope its taken seriously.

Hi duracy,

I can assure you all posts are taken seriously and we are always looking into ways of improving our network, which should result in a better end user experience. Please provide me with your MWEB account details, so that I can look into a few things for you.

Kind regards,

MWEB Guy

Hi System32,

Can you please provide me with your MWEB account details. I will investigate further from my side and provide you feedback.

Kind regards,

Last night it took me 2 and half hours to load up a 20 minute episode, before i could watch it without it stopping to buffer. This happened between around 7pm and 10pm.

thank you kindly - ive PM you.

Well, at this present moment - I am trying to download a file from the Nvidia servers again, to test speeds. Absolutely horrible - sitting at a 'steady 34KB/sec.

With regards to your second statement about streaming, your provided service (DSTV) streaming, which is based on the MWEB / Naspers (DSTV) network - is flying VERY nicely.
But yet, YouTube (not on your network infrastructure) - is going at a POULTRY 29KB/s?
I am beginning to believe these services are being shaped to suit your pocket as a corporate.

Care to comment on above ?

I'm currently downloading the latest nvidia drivers from the uk site, holding steady at around 300KB/s on a single thread download, I'll recheck this a few times from the office during the course of the day to see if it changes much and if I see any significant decline I'll compare the results to an alternate account.

Care to comment on above ?

I was going to signup for the 1mb uncapped service from MWEB today.

Glad i came across this thread, not keen to pay R599 for a dial-up connection.

Thanks guys for helping me not make a big mistake!

If we are all lucky the issues seem to be ironed out now, so maybe check in again later this weekend etc.
the 1mb deal is still pretty awesome

Can you lighten the shaping on Youtube for my account or is this 'just part of the package' ?
I appreciate the testing btw.

@vaalpens thanks for the encouraging feedback. I will continue to test myself through the day and over the weekend

@gdiza , you're right I'm one of the fortunate ones who works for bandwidth (I even have the t-shirt), but really there has to be some benefit to the fact that you guys keep me up until all hours :) I can assure you the though that the product I use at home is a 100% vanilla 4mb shaped package and when I am testing from the office I have access to a range of accounts for various test scenarios, but these are all standard products, to the extent that my team actually has to pay for them internally from our cost center.

@Anthropoid youtube is definitely not shaped, if you are still experiencing poor youtube performance today then please let me know and I will assist you with further troubleshooting myself.

Good Morning, just for info I did a trial on the Nvidia UK website as well and downloaded a 132 mb file. Max speed I got on my 4 mb line and Mweb 4 mb account was 262 KB/s. Seems a bit slow!
