Which is not possible on NNTP as its dead during the day. So theoretically I could queue up 10TB on NNTP downloads and let it run 24x7x365 and not contravene their AUP as they shape it to 0Kbps between 2pm and 7pm (give or take) and then slowly increase to full speed at about 11pm.

AFAIK, yes. As I understand it, their concern with "constant" downloading is focused on either (1) HTTP downloading at line speed 24/7/365 or (2) bypassing the shapers.

What I have been doing for 14 months and got 3 warnings for it this month.

Got this now in an e-mail from the ABUSE department:

Also note that "Usenet", advertises their service as "unlimited speed no throttling or rate limits". This would mean their service offers a way to bypass shaping which is against our AUP.

3 this month! Yikes. I don't know anymore....

Someone from Mweb care to explain this? If you shape on NNTP how in blue blazes does this "offer a way to bypass shaping" :wtf:

Regarding the gmail chat situation, haven't been able to connect to it for a couple hours now.

Someone is smoking to much of the good stuff.... If the source is not throttled (ie USENET) you are bypassing MWEBS shaping ??? huh?? get real!! The line is shaped before you even get to the source!

Would someone mind posting a speedtest, preferably someone in the JHB are, I want to compare it to my current ISP.

Thank you.

Very simply greg, it refers to the use of NNTP service providers who explicitly provide an SSL based feed. Many of these providers advertise these value adds as high speed as they are well aware of the fact that ISPS who shape find it more challenging to manage the traffic.

Hi MWG,

Is there an MWEB test account so I can see if this uncapped business will be too slow for me or not? I want to sign the 6 month 4mb contract discount, but I'm worried about the service levels of the shaped uncapped packages. I don't download more than 50-60gb a month, and this is mostly http/youtube/steam etc.

I phoned Telkom @Mwebguy *twitter lingo soz

The best they could do was reset the port. and check the voice line for any interference.

But it seems better to what it was, so lets see how long this "fix" works for. so far so good

Hi jackshiels

Please advise if you have an existing MWEB account?

Kind regards
MWEB Guy

Gotta give credit where it's due, torrents on my side has been really great lately.
And NNTP for cached content is blazing fast as it used to be.

Just the problem with video streams during the day, it still runs terribly or doesn't work at all and I like watching lots of SC2 streams at atleast 480p. =(
