I am not sure why you would call a 4Meg uncapped Mweb account that cost me R1,000 per month "entry level". I can only assume something about my post annoyed you. Be that as it may, I can't see why this makes a difference. Why on earth would MWeb throttle access to their own speed test servers? Surely this is the one case where there should be a clear path, as quickly as possible, for the data to go through? They base EVERYTHING on the results of these speed tests, so to suggest that it makes a difference what account I use is ridiculous. I certainly would not expect an uncapped 4MB account to be less than half as fast to their own servers compared to Afrihost.

I am well aware what your line + bandwidth costs you. What I'm saying is that the account is entry level in that there are different levels/quality of uncapped accounts - yours being the entry level (and mine). Anyway.

Please answer my question. What Afrihost account is it? A capped account with x gigs?

That IS account most probably uses fibre, so it may be quicker [at times]. Regardless, if it's a capped account you cannot compare to an entry level uncapped service...
 
Where should I send a mail to, find out about a trail account?

I want to move over to Mweb 1mbs uncapped and just want to test things before I move.

How to download 20GB?

My previous post was deleted from this thread for some reason, so I'll ask it again in a different way. I would like to download ~3.5GB of files over HTTP from one site (which come down at around 6KB/s) and ~15GB of files over HTTP from a shaped media-serving site (which come down at around 15KB/s) on my uncapped shaped 384kbps line.

I sent a PM to MWEB Guy to ask about how I should download these files in such a way as to avoid being flagged for a warning. I was told -- as we all know -- that certain HTTP traffic from known media serving sites is shaped and that if I download continually I will be in contravention of the AUP. For some reason that message was deleted from this thread, but not at the request of MWEB apparently.

I've since sent MWEB another PM asking them to let me know how I should go about downloading these files. My average usage on the uncapped line for the last year has been low, so I must say I'm a little put out at being told that I can't actually make use of my uncapped service to download ~20GB. If I "queue" the downloads to run from 19:00 until 07:00 every day will that still be considered continuous downloading? I'm not in a hurry for the files, but I don't know to download that amount of data without having it run "continuously". How do I know if this usage is in line with what MWEB would consider normal usage or not. Would a "normal" uncapped user queue 20GB of downloads? Comments?

don't think it will be flagged as abusing.

your not bypassing shaping with downloading though media sites, as it is clearly shaped as you mentioned.

But we know -- as they reminded me in the PM -- that continuous downloading is in contravention of the AUP. If I just queue up the files to download, they will take several days/weeks to come down at the slow speeds, so that will count as continuous downloading... :confused:

MWEB said that if it's only for a month you won't be contravening the AUP if I remember. They go back and look at your previous months as well, so you should be fine. Alternatively upgrade to 1meg :P

meh i dont know i download every night when i go to sleep till the next morning, and most weekends it runs maxed , been flagged, and 384 users is probably never on the radar.

Upgrade to a 1 or 4 MB line, do the downloads, then downgrade back to 384kbps... :) I hear what you're saying about the "one month", but it somehow feels that I'll then have a "black mark" against my name for this month, and then if I download "too much" again in two months time, then that will be a second black mark. I'm not understanding why downloading "only" 20GB continuously is a problem though. The PM from MWEB clearly reminded me that downloading continuously is in contravention of the AUP. So, as we know, it's not about how much ("only" 20GB) you download, but it's about how you do it (that is, don't do it "continuously"). What if I downloaded from 19:00 to 07:00 every night. Yeah, fair enough, I guess the throughput on a 384kbps line is "too" low.
 
The fact that you have to play lateral chess just to download without being considered naughty is the biggest issue here and pretty much a wet willy in the face of their customers at large.

Feels like you're renting an apartment but being told you can only use certain (particularly dim) lights at certain hours and not regularly either.

If you are comparing the uncapped options well, different companies shape different sites, differently.
 
iM not comparing shaping,iM talking downloads not even starting on Mweb,tried through download Manager and browser,get a host offline error in jdownloader

Pages on mediafire.com with download links not opening, but mediafire "index" page is opening. Ideas?
