So bike is a write-off officially. 110k to fix a bike I bought for 80k. Yeah seems to make sense. Not. Repairers phoned and asked if they could buy the engine. I asked if it runs and they said yes she still ticks over. So where is the 110k going exactly. No reply

A car brand new off the show room floor is often worth more in parts than it is whole, same applies to bikes

exactly! that's the problem

years ago I had a BMW Dakar and came short with it - little visible damage, but R16k to repair - just left it as is and sold like that years later
 
Dropped an MSX125/Grom last year. Left mirror damaged, cosmetic damage on some plastics, headlight had some scratches and a smallish mark on the swingarm - also R16k

They "replace to new" so had to wait for parts etc to be imported. The benefit, though, is that it looks flawless afterwards (almost better than the day I bought it).
 
Complete overkill packing for 2 nights away.

Might even throw my slippers in like a real la-di-da biker.

Regarding price to fix, some guy drove me off my bike in March. I bought the bike in February, brand new, for R35k. Cost to fix, mainly panels, a handle and a peg or two, came to R20k. No damage to the engine or radiator. Mind blowing. The rim was the most expensive, at R5500.
Friend of mine, has a Hyabusha. He forgot to push out his stand, one evening after a MC gathering, and his bike ended up on his side. His insurance had to fork out R40k to replace that panel......a panel that's worth more than my bike, wtf.

Very very very narrowly missed a sheep about 50km out of town, but otherwise and uneventful and pleasant ride.

Reasonably pace of 100km/h average according to the bike.

It is quite scenic and I swear the 10km to Sutherland sign is measured in Celsius because it went from a comfortable 14.5 to 10 instantly as I passed it.

The Sutherland Hotel doesn’t match the horror stories I heard so it must have seen some renovations lately.

Tonight is going to be a serious piss up. Apart from the BMW event down the road the entire hotel is full of BMW people and there is a bar and fireplace lounge downstairs so I expect a pyjama after party.
 
I don't like group rides. At all. Nor Rallys or any branded biker gathering.
Can tolerate one person but not stopping every 50km or less for smoke breaks.
I don't understand the biker hive mentality. For me most fun is solo or two
To each his/her own I guess.

+1, like the solo thing too. Think because I have more of a commuter mentality, than a biker one. I have no need for competition.

These are broken into multiple smaller groups and generally no stopping for smoke breaks and that kind of stuff.

Ultimately everyone knows where we are going and gets there on their own time within reason.

That being said I don’t do Rallies any more either and this kind of thing I don’t do on the regular.

This is much more of a supported ride with Support vehicles and a pre-planned party at the end which takes away the drama and need to make arrangements and stuff.

Sunday night we were on our own and went to Tulbagh.

All and all a good time was had and I wasn’t put off by anything like I usually am at Rallies and such.

The BMW crowd is very much a “motorcyclist” one and not a biker thing.

It’s also not really branded, just organised by then. Sure it’s mostly BMW but lots of other bikes too.

It’s been the best group I’ve ever been to honestly because there is very little pressure to partake in the group mentality.

I have no idea what you mean by give mentality though. It’s a simple case of people sharing similar interests getting together in a social capacity and it applies to every hobby out there.

For that matter this very forum qualifies as hive mentality then.
