Had one, and not a cheap one either. It was a terrible experience and the warranty process and resulting fight even more so.

Noisy as hell, then started leaking in the winter while riding in the wet. Terrible hinge and click system.

Padding went thin quickly as well. Something broke off with the vents etc.

French helmets are just like French cars.

Worst you can do is trying to buy it all from one brand, because they aren't all great at everything.

Get waterproof boots from the very start.

Great stuff, thanks, one more thing, a quick browse shows different styles of gloves and boots, some boots are actual boots like offroad ones, some are like a high rise shoe, some gloves are also long that cover the wrists and a little of the forearms. Are these a preference or specific for specific uses?
 
Generally speaking - short gloves for warm weather, long gloves for cold
You do of course get slightly more protection with the longer gloves

Kind of the same applies for boots but personally I wouldn't get anything that doesn't at the very least cover my ankles

It is about purpose and function yes.

Boots it's about ankle and shin protection. For road use you definitely don't need the over the knee types.

Personally I have Sidi Vertigo shin protector types now and when I change would go for something that is ankle only and you can possibly wear all day.

Gloves it's more of a preference thing. I like them longer so they go over my jacket. Others like wearing gloves under their jacket. I would say try both on together and see.

Don't make the mistake of buying offroad gear because it's cheaper. It will do almost nothing on tar.
 
What sort of things do they test when you do your bike license? Thinking of going for mine, havent been on a bike for 20 years.

Hill pull away like car.

Left turn and stop.

Average speed left and right corner.

Emergency stop and swerve.

I recall there were six but don't remember.

Basically they test if you can ride.

Don't be like me and buy the cheapest boots. I bought a cheap pair from full throttle. 3 months later they were falling apart.
I then went and got a nice pair of Alpinestars and 2 years later they are still running strong even with everyday use.
Also keep your eye out on gumtree. I managed to get a nice, hardly used, leather Alpinestars jacket for a good price.
Personally I prefer leather gloves with long cuff. I feel it better protection. Same with boot. My boots cover my ankle and shin.

Understood, tell me, the long boot how sturdy is it, ie my off-road boots I can't really move my ankle much, how are road boots in comparison?
 
I actually bought tech 3 off road boots before off gumtree and tried them on my road bike. Couldn't change gears at all. The road boot is much better. More flexible. More feel. Less bulky.

How long is a piece of string? It is going to vary boot to boot

Yup my Sidi's are now 13 years old.

Granted they've been re-soled and the zips also replaced but that was only about two years ago.

Not sure I would fork out the R6500 for them now though, but definitely rather spend the money on good stuff first and suck it up than buy cheap crap that you need to replace a year from now.
 
Well The German is having it's first service done in Nelspruit today.

The Panniers & Top box have been ordered and should hopefully get there by the 13th of June when I go pick her up.

If I wasn't a patient man...

My Sidi's (only 2 years though) are holding up great, even after a minor incident, still 100% waterproof

Solid option even as a brand new starter bike for many people that have never ridden before.

But please don't fall for the balloon/residual deal which I just know you are looking at.

Plan was to get something smaller until I'm familiar with bikes again, then stumbled on this, wasn't aware it was even available.

Out of interest, what are those Deals? I see they even include insurance. (I'll probably purchase cash)

Yeah it's something like free insurance and reduced instalment for the first year.

But there is a massive residual to be paid at the end of it all.

I havent worked the numbers but usually it doesn't make sense and is always more expensive.
