Anyone have any thoughts on this glove and the website?
http://onlinemotorcyclegear.co.za/product/mechanix-leather-m-pact-glove/

Haven't seen this advertised as a moto glove but seems quite nice.

So I decided to pull the trigger on a set similar to this:
https://www.takealot.com/mechanix-wear-m-pact-black-glove/PLID46977291

Will post a quick review when I get it, but from what I've seen on AdvRider there is a couple of people already using the Mechanix gloves for moto gloves. Seems decent enough. :) Gotta be better than spirit.

do you guys really think those will stand the same as a decent pair of leather gloves with proper reinforcement?

In terms of impact, those have D3O in the knuckles and are rated for impact protection. In terms of the palm it also has some D3O in it, to both help with impacts and to lessen vibrations on the palm. In terms of sliding, I'm pretty sure that these will slide better than the shite spirits I currently ride with, and seeing as these are abrasion resistant and double stitched I'm confident that it won't fall apart immediately.

From here:
"
Goatskin:

Goat is one of the most widely use glove leathers. Goat is best for value and durability.

Its main advantage is a lower cost than sheep and deer, yet it’s strength characteristics come fairly close. It looks a little grainier than cowhide — fine in some applications and less desirable in others..7 – .8 mm and .8 -.9 mm"

And the synthetic leather on the Mechanix are .8mm, I'm willing to take the chance on gloves that both look cool and doesn't cost over a grand. In terms of falling over, the D3O on the palms will assist with that :)

EDIT: The knuckles don't have D3O, but it does have:
  1. "Thermoplastic Rubber (TPR) impact protection meets EN 13594 impact standard."
That rating is what motorcycle gloves need to attain anyway: https://www.satra.com/ppe/EN13594_mc.php and this covers more than just the knuckles as well. So the only place where this differs - in my mind at least - is in sliding, and there I'm sure it'll do better that at least the spirits and probably better than the "off road" gloves that salesmen were pushing anyway.

Hey guys.
Over the weekend I replaced my rear break pads. I payed R370 for a pair(its for a Z300.) It seemed a bit much to me. I bought it from the Bike Service Centre (Jakaranda street) and i wanted to compare it to the dealer prices, but the Kawasaki and Suzuki dealer shops are gone in Centurion. Did they close or just move?
If you stay in Centurion, can you shed light on some of the better shops out here? I have also tried Just Bike Tyre (old jhb road) in the past and had good deals from them before.

I need some other consumables but I thought i would ask you guys before browsing around.

Seems alright to me.

Paid R461.80 for my SBS 674 LS pads the other day.

So did some additional searching, here is an article explaining the rating that gloves to comply with to be sold in europe: https://www.superiorglove.com/blog/new-en-388-glove-standards

Reading through that, and then looking on the mechanix website, the gloves I'm getting carry a 3 our of 4 possible rating for abrasion, it also passed with impact protection rating.

I'm not seeing any of the big moto brands advertising their specific EN388 rating, all they specify is CE certified under EN13594, which, again the mechanix achieves.

I'm not trying to convince anyone, but there is the research I've found. Mainly, it seems to comply to much the same legislation, and they are open about it. Where the moto brands seem to hide their certs.

seems very reasonable if not cheap. a pair sets me back usually around R400-500 depending on front or back (SBS)

I think as usual it's the European vs American product factor that throws it all out and makes the whole standards thing a bit useless.

But it also seems much more applicable to industrial PPE application than riding bikes.

I must admit, that doing some of this searching, I feel like that some of brands are taking us - the consumer - for fools. I went looking specifically for the rating/certification of the A* and EVS gloves that I was considering, and for the life of me I couldn't find anything. Their high end gloves all have it advertised that they are CE approved, but none of the gloves in my price range had anything of the like, so there is no way of actually directly comparing the brands.

Probably cognitive bias kicking in though.. :)

If you want the best these are the guys....

https://www.planet-knox.com/product-category/gloves/

They basically invented CE armor protection.

But you'll pay through your arse.
