Yes it's a shaft drive, way less maintenance than a chain and not so messy.

I'm planning on adding a 1400 Intruder to my collection as soon as I can find one locally that's in a good condition. The 800 is watercooled and the 1400 aircooled. Nothing wrong with watercooled, but it's just one more thing that can leave you stranded at the roadside. I love cruisers, never was a big fan of superbikes. I love to be able to take in the scenery while I ride.

Looking at the picture, my first thought was that it's a Suzuki Steed.

What's it like riding long distance without a screen, doesn't it tire you out? I did it for a very short while while looking for specific bolts on a new screen I had ordered and it felt like you have to really hold on if you're going faster than 80km/h

On the water vs air, I have a suspicion we won't be seeing very many air cooled machines in future - emissions standards are getting too stringent :/

Long distance without a screen is ok when you don't ride too fast (100km/h or so), anything faster can become uncomfortable. I've been thinking about getting a bolt on screen for my bike, just haven't gotten around to doing some window shopping.

I think we'll at least be getting aircooled bikes so long as HD keeps making them, although they have also brought out two small additional watercooled cruisers which unfortunately are not available locally yet.

Did the Toy Run Yesterday (Durban - Pavillion to Amanzimtoti) Great experience, tons of bikes. Other than a little rain on route, a small accident where a Harley rider braked too late & hard behind someone else and slid out, it was awesome!

Small clip of the meeting point at the Pavillion

Also had a spill over the weekend.

Was doing an Endo yesterday at Upper deck on the breakfast run Like I do almost always when I stop to park the bike. Miss calculated the breaking somehow and flipped the bike arse over nose :o. Top fairing is borked, and the 2 lights. Rode it home like that with my pride on the floor still. Will take it for a quote on Saturday

Honestly ... I think "showboating" is always going to bite you in your arse ;) eventualy :D

How have I been missing this thread all this time?

I just pulled the trigger on one of these...

It is scary how the prices have climbed since the last time I needed to do this and I figured it's all in the USD/ZAR value.

How on earth it's legal for SARS to take $100 out of your pocket for basically processing a package that someone else is delivering is beyond me though. Hopefully they are just overcompensating and the customs isn't really that much so I can claim it back after the fact.

Import duties & vat ... about 24% of the original value. We need a local company to get really good at making these things. The Akrapovic slipons on my XT660R cost a fortune. I modded a 2nd hand pipe on my BMW this time round, rather than buying a slipon...

So true :D I have been doing it for years. But everyone gets it wrong from time to time I suppose. Just glad it wasn't a flip. I just jumped off when I saw this aint going to happen. Took a small spill but no injury. My pride though took one massive knock. Getting up with a couple of people laughing their arses off. Not nice :o. The whole morning at Upper Deck, I was "THAT" guy :D

Mate of mine, Jaco Scheepers owns Stealth Performance Pipes. They based in Montana Pretoria.

Must be some sort of poetic justice for your cricket comments :p But this is the exact reason I don't do anything flashy, too scared of being "that guy" (we'll ignore the fact that my skills are non existant too)

/crosses fingers this doesn't come back full circle to hurt my bike

Most probably... :D

I was reminded from another thread - easy way to wash your bike

  • Buy Prepsol (think Midas and Brights will have)
  • Get one of those garden poison sprayer thingies (although the hand sprayers used for stuff like window cleaners is fine too), prepare a 50/50 prepsol/water mix, I need roughly 1L total. Some people use fancy foam compressor jobbies, but any kind of spray is just fine
  • Hose down the bike with plain water
  • Spray on prepsol
  • Wait 5-10min, go have a beer or other cold beverage
  • Hose down the bike again
  • You're done!

Note that it is a degreaser so you'll want to reapply oil to your chain, unless you have a shaft drive

Used prepsol for years with my MX bikes. Chain lube is a must for after! Especially when using a high pressure cleaner. Also beware of washing the grease out of the swingarm bearings, shock mount bearings and wheel bearings! That prepsol strips grease out like a pro with a high pressure cleaner.

Once dry, use a can of silicon spray... gleams like brand new ;)

I was under the impression there are no duties on parts?

VAT is 14% of 110% excluding shipping that I was expecting and having calculated it now that is actually pretty close to the $100.

Personally I prefer to make use of actual engineering companies who specialise in this and would gladly pay for it. You get what you pay for.

My Buell I fitted a Jardine system first time round but being race spec it needed repacking the whole time and eventually exploded because I was lazy. Then I had a stock pipe modded by a pro in the US and shipped here and that's still on the bike today.

With the Triumph I wanted something fancy and carbon fibre.

Actually haven't done the Prepsol mission in years, not since my Suzuki if I recall. Buell was very easy to wash.

But I should do it with the Triumph to try and clean those hard to reach bit a little bit.

What size jeans do you normally wear? Just trying to get a feel for if these are larger than normal as I expect or if the size is pretty much same as usual.

It's pretty much the same. I'm between a 34/36 in levis. They are slightly loose around the waist and I need to use a belt.
