It does in fact have a cruise control, which is either not working, or I do not know how to use it. There are some diagnostic tests I can run, which I will do when I'm back.

Yeah - visiting family in PE then flying to Joburg for work for three weeks, back to PE and then rideong back to CT mid October. It's going to be along month.

I would be interested in the consumption, perhaps on the way back I'll take some fuel, run it dry and see how far I get.

Just install Fuelly on your phone and track it like that.

After a few tanks it equalises to a reliable number.

All that said, this bike is a stopgap. I really do want to get something out of the box, and versatile enough to manage trips like this and also the 10km commute to work.

Open to suggestions.

I like the NCX750X, but that didn't go down too well last time I mentioned it...

Why didn’t it go down too well? They are excellent all round bikes especially for someone taller like yourself.

Also super frugal so win win there.

While not the most exciting they also aren’t boring.

Oh and I was going to say it’s interesting it has cruise control.

We are talking about the digital kind with buttons right? Not one of those weird and dangerous things that holds the throttle in place?

Actually probably shouldn’t be surprised that it has these things since it was at the top of the game when it came out.

Awesome, great idea. Will do so.

I mean if you have any idea what the ODO was at when you filled up last and still have the slip you could populate the first entry already which is a blank one as the starting point basically.

If you reset the trip you can just work it backwards.

Even if you don’t have the slip can just work out how much it was from your bank statement assuming you paid with card.

Iirc, the general consensus was 'it's damned boring, get something Exciting!'

In any event, that's not really going to stop me, but I am certainly interested in alternatives to look at.

And now that I'm thinking about it, it was my mechanic who said this l, not the forum.

It's got this: View attachment 58590905-Cruise-Control(1).pdf

Do in fact have all slips but logged only the first of three fills, noting the first. Could map the distance between stops and tie it all together.

For the type of bike that it is I found it quite exciting and actually a huge surprise.

Makes a good noise and has loads of torque, but it is geared towards being practical.

General I take advice with bikes based on what that person rides or generally prefers. Basically don’t listen to anyone riding a super bike if you want commuter advice etc.

Some perspective, I rode the NC and much more expensive and faster VFR1200 back to back and I walked way wanting to take the NC home.

Many people equate fun to speed, which is actually very rarely true. The VFR has loads of top speed but it was a tank to ride and just generally hard work.

The NC on the other hand has lots of “in town” poke and is way more agile and manoeuvre-able which makes it more fun in the go anywhere sense.

That frunk is also just brilliant for day to day practicality.

There’s a good reason guys like @Sinbad are still riding these a good few years after they first started riding as you really don’t need much more.

Actually wish Honda would make an electric bike based on the NC, that would be perfect.

Oh wow, basically the same as mine just older.

Basically you need to flip the big switch to the right so it’s on and the controls are “unlocked”.

Then you hit the small Button forward (set) when you get to the speed you want and it will retain that speed.

If you touch the clutch or brakes it will disengage maybe there’s also a kill switch in the throttle like mine when you go past zero).

If you then hit Resume it will go up to the last speed that was set.

Once engaged mine can increase speed with set and decrease with res but don’t think yours will get that fancy.

I do believe if any of the brake or clutch sensors isn’t operations then it kills the system for safety, so if it’s not operational as per above then it’s likely that.

Sweet - I had been trying to engage it with by doing the first step, but did not get to the second (as I was at time barrelling down the N2. Thanks for the overview will test. It's going to make the return trip way easier if I can get it working. I have a blister on my revving hand from the trip...

Yup, all excellent points, and the bike really ticks all of my boxes, honestly. As I said previously, the speed I reached today, I could reach on the NC in any event, and that's too fast for my bones. As long as it's zippy in town (what I will use it by far the most for, and will manage the occasional trip, looks very much like my cup of tea. And if it's anything like my CBR, I'm presuming it's just about indestructible.

Test rides tell all. But yeah they do seem quite reliable.

you can also rather do the inverse, top it up, ride, top up again and see how much it used. draining the tank especially on an older bike is not the best idea.

Got it working.

Hi. I have a DRZ400E that I'd like to have leak down tested. Suzuki South in Wynberg will do it for 270 exvat. Normally I like to work on the bike myself but I'm a slow mechanic... to put it very mildly. If the results of that test necessitate inspection of the piston, rings, valves, gaskets etc I was thinking of saving myself a lot of time and just taking it to a mechanic.
I've only ever worked on it myself though - can anyone suggest a mechanic that is reasonably priced?

Can always get a secondary bike for short commutes. If fuel saving is important then 125cc bikes and scooters get you close to 50km/l.

Suzuki has the Burgman Street (scooter), Sym has the NHT (dual sport GS looking bike), Yamaha the XTZ125 or YBR125, Honda the XR125.

I love these small bikes for commuting in town. Longer trips though (or if you have a stretch of road where cars don't give a crap about the speed limit) then it's not ideal.

But a runaround + your baby is a win/win.
