How so? My first duke service was about 1200. 2nd service is estimated to be 1300.
Interesting, I've always been told (coworkers, brother, forums) that KTM is expensive to maintain.

On the other hand, my MSX is going for 1000 service tomorrow. Expected cost is just over R600.

I also have a KTM they quoted R1000 for first service, and i can wait while they do it if i make an appointment .

600 sounds good :) I also heard KTM parts/service etc are expensive. I'm sure the bigger bike services are more heavy.

Ducati 1200 monstor - 3rd service is R13000!

Regarding the RC390. I didn't like it. My duke 390 is way more comfy to ride.

I see. So the KTM cost thing is wrt to the high end models.

That Duke 390 is nice. Always liked smaller bikes. Maybe I'll consider it one day... :)

I feel the 650cc Parallel Twin options are great starter bikes and will last a while.

The 300 's are just too small to be truly useful and you'll get bored of them quickly and endanger yourself on highways. Also stupidly expensive.

I always recommend the ER6 series for style for shorter riders. The Honda NC700/750 for taller more practical riders who don't worry about looks too much.

Good call not going for a 600cc inline sports bike, it wouldn't really teach you anything as it's easy to go fast for anyone.

You'll learn the real skills riding a small bike to it's max, rather than a big bike at 25%.

Another thing to consider is which of the bikes on your list have ABS.
Thanks for the heads up on the ABS. The Honda NC range are good bikes from what I heard, I would've included one on the list of options but I see them being a bit tall and somewhat intimidating. I'll keep an eye out for a good deal on an ER-6f or ER-6n, I wonder if they'll feel different considering they're the same bike underneath.

Fairings, unless they are tour-bike enormous, make very little difference at highway speeds or less. I only feel the lack of full wind protection when I get upwards of 150.

As for bike choice: whatever you enjoy riding is what you should get. I went naked (and won't go back) because for me it was the most enjoyable but still with comfort. Supersport bikes are designed for track use. Hard suspension, heavy brakes and a riding position that is one step away from torture when u commute on them. Unless you ride a Supersport like it's on the track, it's painful in traffic.

Short version : test ride as much as you can before making your mind up.
Thanks for that, I was ruling out some nakeds that I really liked because I was concerned about too much wind. I'll add some of them to the bikes I test ride.

The F has a full blown windscreen but otherwise I believe is the exact same.

Have only ridden the N though so I might be wrong.

Great bike either way.

Yeah, for sure - I'll first see how it pans out, but I've had no issues hanging my textile jacket above a panel heater overnight in the event of a downpour, so I suspect it will be a similar story here. The thought of a third pair of pants, I find exhausting, and if practical, would prefer to avoid it.

I don't understand how that is ok :p I can't stand having big, heavy wet clothing, never mind riding in it

Sit on it, you may find it is a reasonably small bike. I think if you're 1.75m tall it'll be fine as the seat is 83cm high

I'm 1.83m, and my seat is probably around 90cm off the ground. Sure that is after a fair amount of riding so I'm comfortable with that, but it can be set to about 82cm, at which point it feels quite silly since I'm so close to the ground (if I straighten both legs I'd be standing clear of the seat)

Yeah I know what they cost.

I meant it will be interesting to see what servicing costs are compared to purchase cost.

I should actually start a shared spreadsheet thing and have everyone submit their invoices for a real comparison.

While I have 40km to ride to work and plenty of highway it will never work.

But if I was closer would be fun for sure.
First service done on Grom. R598.50

Next service at 4000 will probably be more expensive.

Last Sunday morning:

Going up was fine, going down the other side I hit heavy fog. Bloody cold and zero visibility thru the helmet, had to ride at 60 with visor up to see where I was going.

Anyone know where to find decent gloves in CT?

I can order online but for gloves it's best to be able to try them on, otherwise the fit will drive me nuts.

BMW :p
Trac-Mac + Motorcycle World + [-]Wild@Heart[/-] (seems they stopped doing clothing) + FlyingBrick are the ones I remember off hand

What camera are you using to record this ?

Hey guys, I've been thinking about getting into motorcycling for quite a while now and have been doing some research on the different types of bikes and riding tips for different weather patterns and so on. I went from wanting a supersport to wanting a naked and kept going back and forth for quite a few months, but the naked bike's lack of wind protection swayed me more towards faired alternatives.

I ended up settling for the following bikes: Kawasaki Ninja 300, Kawasaki Ninja 650R(ER-6f), and Honda CBR500R. Choosing between these would most likely be a matter of price and test riding them, but I like all of them from the little bit I know about them. The bike I like the most is the CBR650F but that isn't available in the country. As you can see, I held myself back a bit and went for sensible options that still had some sporty looks and wind protection with fairings.
Initially I had the likes of the CBR600RR and the GSXR600 as options, but I figure I can wait until I'm a better rider to get something like that

I'd like to find out what your opinions are on these and if any of you have ridden any of these bikes, how did you like 'em?

The ninja is a bit out of place in that comparison, although the the best looking! Is your attended purpose commuting or just weekend fun ? ABS is a must have either way
