Their range should be in almost any bike shop.

But more than anything have a look at the fitment instructions for both.

Well BMW replaced my Quickshifter at almost R6000 with a smile.

Not to mention giving me a bike for three days.

Triumph can learn a whole lot about that kind of service...

Realising my bike is still the best thing I could possibly have bought is a sideline bonus. Like going from Cessna to an F-16.

The only better option would be a 2017 model.

I now fully understand why people go BMW and stick to them like glue.

Yep, the after sales service is normally tops (exception being the R1200 GS LC Stanchion issues - which yes is being handled, but very poorly, if you not in the loop you wouldn't know shyte about it). But that aside, BMW replaced my whole headlight unit because it got dust in it. I asked them to clean it when it went for a service, workshop manager said no, not supposed to get dust in it. So they replaced the whole thing under warranty. One of my spotlights would flick on and off intermittently, also replaced. And my local Motorrad will topup oil and give your bike a once over for free before long trips...

Maybe it's just you? ;)

Triumph have only ever given me outstanding service.

Pick a loan bike whenever mine went for a service.

Reg/Rectifier fried at 2 and a half years old (warranty had already expired), new one ordered FOC & given a loan bike whilst it was being flown in & fitted. No cost to me at all.

Have never had any other issues or problems with the bike or with Triumph SA.

Welcome. I have had my entire fuel system replaced due to problems I get on cold start which was damn hard to replicate their side so they acted on my word. It however ended up being something else.

The way the 700/800 hunts for revs and idle I’m not surprised it would have an odd fuel system.

I can only presume you are not in the Cape?

I struggled throughout the entire warranty period to get the right side “wing” panel replaced that was rubbing paint off against the OEM crash protectors. A design fault on their part.

Dealership eventually had it fixed themselves as Triumph wouldn’t honour it.

Then at 30000km service I said there is something wrong with the engine and was basically ignored and told it’s nothing.

Shortly after the oil light was flickering and a replacement sensor was ordered.

Swopped at 33000km odd didn’t solve the problem and they opened it up to discover that the motor was basically eating itself throwing a big end bearing.

Of course now it was just out of warranty so a massive back and forth fight ensued.

Eventually Triumph agreed to cover the 90k in parts but not the labour. Dealership came to the party there and it cost me *only* R5k even though I had told them there was a problem well inside the warranty already.

Getting loan bike through this whole two month long drama was another issue in and of itself.

So no, definitely not just me.

Eish. Sorry to hear of your trials & tribulations - sounds remarkably similar to the nonsense I had with my K75 in the late 90's. Admittedly BM's customer service has improved since then - doubt it could have declined from those levels anyhow!

I'm Jozi based, and as said have only ever had outstanding service from Triumph SA & their dealers.

Talking services and BMW, I am surprised that Motorrad doesn't offer maintenance plans with their bikes.

And then on the other end of the spectrum what do the other brands offer, Honda, Ducati, etc etc

They actually do but through a third party.

Triumph did the same through Liquid Captal but not sure if they still do. It didn’t make sense for me mileage and cost wise.

Ducati had for a few years included the Ducati Ride Plan with the purchase of their bikes up to 2 years, but that also became an optional extra later and the cost was monumental.

I got a service plan for my KTM 1050 from RAD Moto. Was about R10k and it's a 4 year/40k km plan.
Its definitely worth it if you get to 30k kms as that service is expensive.
Not sure if it was a good idea though as I am not sure I am going to keep the bike for 4 years and I doubt it will bump the value up much if I sold the bike. It is nice not having to budget for a service for the next 4 years though...

If it really was R10k that’s a really good deal.

Depending on what it includes as the “service” over “maintenance” plans don’t always cover everything.

With the Triumph plan I was offered it didn’t make sense for the mileage I was doing and after the fact I’m glad I was right.

But something to consider is that you can finance the plans with the bike.

Saw this yesterday. I really do like this look. Never been a cafe racer fan but this is lovely.

Also, my brother is dangerously interested in the S1000R (I think that's the name - the naked one) for R140,000

Same incident or another one ?

"On the 30th July 2016 I received a call from my mom that nobody ever wants to hear... "Gill, Your father has been in an accident. He went for a ride with the BMW club in the Sutherland mountains and his bike malfunctioned. He fell off and is in critical condition" "Will he be okay???" "I am not sure – I have just been called on the satellite phone by another rider..."

This was the start of a very heartbreaking phone call. Let me give a little backstory here..

My dad has always loved the BMW club. He has been riding their bikes for many years, and has been a faithful supporter, attending numerous rides with them and even doing an international BMW Bike holiday through Spain and France, which I had the privilege to join him on. Last year he bought a 2016 BMW GSA R1200 Adventure Bike to replace his 2014 model. He was over the moon with it, until he joined the BMW club for an offroad ride through the Sutherland Mountains.

The bike's stanchion collapsed as he rode over a tiny rut in the road, in convoy with 10 other riders. He was travelling at a speed of 45km/h when this occurred. The hydraulic oil shot all over his protective clothing and he was thrown off the bike, breaking 10 ribs, puncturing his lung, and breaking his shoulder. I thank God every day that he was wearing his neck brace and protective padding, because who knows what would have happened if he hadn't...

My dad eventually (12 hours later) landed up in the Worcester Medi Clinic, where he was rushed to ICU. The doctors immediately started performing different scans and Xrays, and found the punctured lung. They operated as soon as they could to drain the lung, and were successful.

1 year later, my dad is healthy and active again, but is still undergoing extensive rehabilitation for his shoulder injuries.

My dad is a righteous man, and he demanded that BMW conducted a formal investigation of the bike's malfunction. The parts were sent to Germany and were kept there for a few months.

BMW did NOT cover a single medical bill, which cost hundreds of thousands... BMW did not replace my dad's bike, which he bought for over R250 000 new... BMW has not paid my father a CENT for the months that he was forced to remain at home, severely impacting his quality of life... But worst of all, BMW has not even taken responsibility for their bike's failure.

Their official report stated the bike was NOT responsible for the accident, and that the "motorcycle had to endure one of the most severe impacts in order to sustain such damage..." As you can see in the video THIS IS A LIE! THE BIKE DID NOT ENDURE A SEVERE IMPACT AT ALL. The rut that he rode over was TINY, and he was travelling at 45km/h. There are 10 eye-witnesses from the BMW club who can confirm this information.

If this were the only account of this accident, then maybe BMW would have a leg to stand on, but there have been MULTIPLE accounts of this same incident ALL OVER THE WORLD! Lives have not yet been taken, but BMW has got to recall this bike before innocent people start to die as a result of a manufacturing fault...

To make matters worse, the bike went in 3 days before the outride for a full service and to put on the off-road tires. BMW inspected the bike and found no fault.

We have put together a FB Page and website to gather all of the accounts of previous incidents, and have created a petition to hold BMW accountable. Please sign it here: "http://bmwfatalflaw.com/#petition
