Seriously getting to the point of getting a motorcycle. The most important box has been ticked - wifely approval.

So, classes are booked to get me up to speed, thereafter the learners, so on to which first bike? I'm strongly considering a Duke 690R as first bike. The NC is very close in pricing to it, but the KTM comes with all sorts of riding modes, and the single cylinder is beginner approved from what I understand. Any reason not to do this?
 
KTM were having some reliability issues enginewise from what I recall. Not sure if it’s still an issue.

I wouldn't call it beginner approved just because it's a single...it's a lot more bike than the NC. (55kw at 147kg dry vs 40.3kw at 220kg wet).

And I wouldn't buy a KTM anyway unless you plan to swop it for another soon as the warranty is up.

That being said you are going about the lessons first the correct way so ultimately there shouldn't be all that much between it and you'll only die slightly faster on the KTM. :)

Riding Modes are a crock of **** anyway...you'll never actually use them and even then they make minimal difference.

Main thing was the Rain mode, which limits the amount of slip and all that fun stuff.
NC doesn't even ABS from what I can see though?

Rain mode basically just limits power and turns down throttle response. Pretty easy thing to do on your own if you have dexterity similar to that of a sloth.

I cannot stand Rain mode on my much more powerful bike.

Fortunately I can split out the traction and throttle options so have just setup my own "custom mode" for when it's really a **** show.

But generally even when wet I have it on full power mode.

As for ABS...I simply assumed the Honda has ABS across the range by now, that is a major oversight if it's still just on the DCT model.

FYI you can't really "limit" slip. If it's going to happen it's going to happen and it will really just change how quickly it responds to that slip.

Bikes being bikes it's not quite the same magic as on cars.

But in an argument of Bike with ABS + TCS over a bike with none it certainly wins, but on a bike that has it any way with different levels? I still call it a crock of ****.

Rain mode is more of a placebo effect (and sure it does work in that capacity) and not much else really. As for throttle it makes for a terrible experience.

The last thing you want in rain which is daunting in and of itself is a bike that behaves COMPLETELY DIFFERENTLY than it does the rest of the time, which is why I don't use it.

In my opinion it would be a good bike to start. Nice and light weight. I've sold my adventure bike and wouldn't mind getting a 690 when I have the cash. I think I will stick to lighter bikes going forward. But Ja reliability is apparently an issue with KTM although I haven't had any issues myself in the years I've owned them. As someone said before Yamaha MT07 also a good option.

That 90's SA rock band Battery Nege wrote a song about them I think. Didn't they call it Kick The Machine?
