MyBB Motorcycle Owners Thread

I have not been on this forum too long, but this is a thread that I have interacted with most often I think.

It's kak that people, both bikers and non-bikers are discussing who was at fault in the wake of Fanie's death. Whether it be him or the cager, the fact is that a dear forumite has passed should be the main paint here. Be it due to his own negligence or not.

The one thing I have learned from riding a bike is responsibility. As a biker you are responsible for your actions, even if you are in the right. A biker cannot lane split at 100km/h per hour in traffic that is barely moving. Cause and effect should be something that every biker thinks of.

It’s not about assigning blame but rather learning from it an event fresh in everyone’s memory while it has impact.

Two weeks from now it will be meaningless because everyone would have forgotten the reality and gone back to living an unrealistic fantasy.

He is dead. It’s done and nothing will change that.

However that can be a learning/teaching moment and have some actual value.

People get too stuck on the elephant in the room nonsense.

A couple of years back my biology teachers husband was out hang-gliding with my dad over a weekend. He made a small error of judgment turning into the hilltop rather than away. He hit the hillside at such a slow speed.
His aorta had split on impact. Death was instant.

That impact doesn't look huge but there are frailty's in the human body we don't always realise on what a knife edge we live.

Also good chance that the car itself didn’t do damage to him but that he went over the top and knocked into something else etc.

I took Glenhove road and passed 6th avenue about 9:30 this morning, thinking about Fanie. It was still busy, but I guess the accident probably happened a bit earlier in the day. No trace of the accident was left.

I know that Glenhove between 7 and usually till way after 9am is usually backed up all the way from the M1 to Oxford road, this is why I avoid it (not a biker - wish I could get through traffic like you guys, too scared to take the risk though) . I guess that what happened is that it was backed up as usual, someone on Glenhove left a gap so the car could cross Glenhove from 6th. There is new building site on the corner of 6th on the M1 side, so vision would have been restricted if you are on a bike passing the long line of stationary cars. The car probably couldn't see Fanie approaching and started to cross. Fanie wouldn't have seen the car due to the line of cars until too late. This is just my guess as to what happened, only a witness would be able to verify.

Anyway it just highlights that you cannot blame a specific individual, we all have to be careful and drive with 100% attention, whether in a car or bike. Expect the unexpected, and be overly cautious. A couple of minutes saved is not worth a life.

Would it be correct to assume that he was passing the row of backed up cars on the right of the cars, between the row and the pavement?

Thats the only was his vision would've been obscured if the car was crossing over from right to left on 6th.
o is where the vehicle ended up.
x is point of impact.

Or he was driving up the middle of the road and the other car turned right from glenhove coming towards him, into 6th, through a gap in the standstill traffic.

This may come across as seriously cocky.

"Cowards live another day"

I don’t understand how that relates to anything at all and your earlier comment moaning about other people discussing it?

Actually I don’t even understand what it means in the context.

Unless you are saying you are the coward?

IIRC, in the pic his bike is closer to the "broken white lines" making point of impact to the right of that van?

EDIT: You know, one looks at that pic and that big island with the cross road in front and it is difficult not to image what happened: pass the cars on the right, car thinks it has a gap....

Looking again at the accident pics, my theory is wrong - thanks for pointing it out @Sinbad.
The car either crossed from Venus road (opposite side of 6th), or was heading down Glenhove towards the Highway and turned Right. In that case it should have been easier to see a bike heading up Glenhove as traffic is in the opposite direction in the morning. Damn.....

Driving up the middle would've placed him in the right only lane, beyond the yellow markings.

Can see how the driver of the car thought it was safe to turn and Faan thought the guy would wait for him to squeeze through.

Be safe with your bikes gents.

Do you mean the left of the cars? Between the cars and the pavement? There's a reason that's called the suicide. The other side of the cars (non pavement side) is always the right side to pass cars on.

Took pics this morning of the intersection.
Looking directly across the intersection of 6th and Glenhove from Venus Road
Glenhove 6th intersection.jpg
Car must have ended up a fair distance down 6th (on rhs of pic) as the barriers and light pole on the corner in pic below are not even visible.

For the sake of completeness, the construction on LHS of 6th.

Non-motor cyclists live another day.

They are the first to yap after a bike accident

I had a bit of a close call this morning when some idiot did a U turn in front of me. THANKFULLY I saw him slowing down on the inner lane and slammed anchors in expectation of what he has about to do. I was accelerating from a robot and hadn't even reached 60 yet, but still came to a halt about 5m away from him. Stupid tosser stops dead in front of me perpendicular to the road (half way through his U turn) instead of getting the fk out of my way. Sent some explicitives his way and continued to work, but still.

Since I started riding I've been on the brakes very gently through every robot and past pretty much every side road just in case, seems today it paid off. I'm not scared of riding but I certainly respect that I will come off second best when sht goes down.
