What about service history and warranty? If you are on an older model it makes sense.

Yea, I supposed it is easier in terms of the warranty when the the bike is older. Regarding the service history, I record in the book. My argument has always been that because it is my bike, I actually take the time to service it properly and check that everything works 200%. At the end of the the day, it does have a service history, just not with the dealership

very true. There have been good dealership experiences if you build a bit of a relationship with them but I also prefer doing work on my bikes myself. With costs going the way they are I dont know how much longer dealership service historys are going to be such a requirement. I know of two people personally another maybe 5 or 6 that take their bike to the dealerships for the stamp and then take it to a trusted workshop afterwards to get teh work re-done

Was chatting to some of the guys on a Sporty group that I belong to and one of the guys said that he buys spares on Amazon.com - so logged on to have a look at a simple thing like brake pads. At Harley a set of rear pads is R650 (supplied) on Amazon, with shipping, a set of Kevlars goes for around R430 for both front and rear pad. He gave some good feedback on the brands that he has tried.

Yup. I use amazon and ebay. things like clutch cables and the turn signal cluster unit and gearbox bearings , that kind of thing. sometimes half the price. Expecially for my Dyna. Older bike that was built and restored so parts and so on not easy. For the fat bob though I have found the same. If you can find a guy that buys bulk and imports all at once. gets even cheaper.

Taking it in for the stamp only and working on it at home would be ideal but you would have to build the relationship first through regular services. And if the new buyer called the dealership would there be a service record?

they actually take it for the service. they do the work and get the stamp and then take it and get it all REWORKED, they pay twice. thats how little faith they have in the dealerships.

Anyone see the funeral procession on the Highway (from irene to menlyn) yesterday?

I want to go book my rider's test but I realised I left my learner's license document at home. Does it matter or will they pick up on their system (based on my ID or something) that I have a valid learner's and can go ahead and book my riders...?

It's needed in WP.

https://www.westerncape.gov.za/service/driving-licences

When you apply, you should:
  • bring your ID,
  • four photographs and valid learner’s licence to make your appointment,
  • complete the green colour-coded form, DL1 provided by the traffic department,
  • bring a pen to complete your forms, and
  • a proof of address.

Did you go and do some training prior to going for the test? The amount of K53 you have to do in a small timeframe (or lack thereof) will cost you big points if not done correctly according to the dept...

Yup, been for three lessons already and will do at least one more before doing my test. Feeling confident with everything at the moment, notably my procedures.

Lost my 1st attempt at my license as thought I would just wing it back in highschool! Read a book I thought...would be easy to pass I thought...no better lesson than to fail at something.

Where are you planning on doing the test?

Probably Parow. The oke I have been doing the lessons with reckons the guys there are pretty chilled. He says there are some absolute bastards at Blouberg traffic department, so will stay away from there.

I did a morning booking for mine. The instructors seem a lot more chilled for the first test :) just watched a couple of K53 videos, got some tips from @KingMikel, got there at 730, Instructor pitched at 7:50, was back in the office to process my license and fingerprints at 8:05 - this was done in Krugersdorp (absolute pleasure dealing with a license department that is so jacked up).

The Centurion one was an absolute mess when I did mine (13 years ago) so am wondering if they have upped their game. My 2nd attempt went much better after a K53 lesson on where and when to swivel my head. Overall my experiences with the Centurion Licensing Dept have been dismal at best, including drivers/drivers renewal/learners/license disc renewal.

After my experience with Krugersdorp, I will even do my license renewals there. My daughter will do her bike learners in Jan when she turns 16 and will definitely be taking her there. Everything was pleasant: Staff, process, process, process. Even keeping me updated on the progress of the application. When my card was ready for collection, it literally took me less than 5 minutes to collect it - was worth the ride out from Centurion
