@Merlin is correct, If its more than 5 years... toss it. The foam breaks down over time. The cushioning is cosmetic, the structural integrity on the other hand would be highly compromised.

Apparently my Shark Skwal was made in November 2005, hmmm guess i gotta search some more.
 
There is a guy on YouTube who has a few mirror bashings. Will try find the links - YouTube channel is MotoBunker JHB.

Personally I wouldn't risk a criminal record...
 
A bit retarded to make a helmet with foam that deteriorates when it isn't subjected to elements etc? Nice sales technique that.

What do you mean?

It’s a simple fact of what happens to the materials over extended use for a number of years.

Same way tyres go off even when they aren’t being used.

As does just about anything really. It’s a simple matter of chemistry and aging.

They do offer X-Ray facilities specifically for this. You don’t need to buy the marketing, you can just look at the facts.

I’ve had a secondary Shoei helmet completely fall apart in about nine odd years of sitting in a cupboard having seen minimal riding time as a passenger.

yes but there is quite a big difference between a tyre and helmet inners, i am just saying, in this day and age it seems like they could really design these to last a lifetime.

Both are created through chemistry.

Everything has a lifespan. There is nothing that lasts forever.

well for starters that the one is directly exposed to elements where the other isn't? what exactly is "degrading" this foam like the one sitting in your cupboard?

Check my post again.

You can park a brand new set of tyres in your cupboard and they will be shot after five years.

No elements required.

It’s simply a matter of fact.

Just being exposed to air is actually being exposed to an element.

The foam becomes brittle and start to fall apart and compresses over time, losing its ability to protect your brain from bouncing against your skull.

But if you don’t believe it by all means keep using an old helmet and come and tell us how it worked out after a serious crash.
 
I wish I had a dashcam or helmet cam on the bike to record the retarded **** I see other people do on bikes almost daily.

This morning was one of the best so far....blacked out Gixxer 750 with a chick on the back wearing Crocs.

Not even Crocs with straps on to keep them in place, but the full on plakkie type crocs that will be gone the moment the wind even blows hard. No gloves or anything else gear wise but at the very least some decent Shark helmets between the two of them.

But then I pass them and it gets even better.

Ysbeer has opted to replace his running lights with retro fit LEDs because you know that's so awesome and cool.

Only problem is they are USELESS. At 15-20m looking back in the mirror the bike is invisible in it's no light and blacked out colour scheme.

I won't blame any car who says they didn't see them coming.

Of course once hitting the highway he had to prove his manhood coming past me at 150km/h+ at the very least and I was not at all shocked to see there's no numberplate on the back.

Why don't you have a helmet cam? i always have mine running when i ride.

Because it's a massive pain in the ass and hardly ever bloody works and GoPro is the most overmarketed piece of **** product I have ever had the displeasure to use.

Only thing I would consider now are those ones mounted to front and back of bike permanently but it's not money I need to spend for something so frivolous.

I'll have one when Sena finally actually release their bloody noise cancelling helmet to market.

Check the second hand market. I got a Sony AS-15 for R500, with no mounts. It's strapped to the side of my helmet with some super velcro product, and secured with a lanyard - should the velcro fail. All I have to do is remember to charge it EVERY BLOODY NIGHT, but with a 32GB memory card it captures about 3-4 days of footage. Just plug it into the charger when the phone goes on and it works.

Starting to see my problem...

It's just unnecessary hassles for little benefit.
