What was going on up the West Coast (R27) today?? Hundreds of bikes came pouring out of Royal Ascot (I'm guessing they left from the Paddocks). Traffic all the way up Otto du Plessis as far as Parklands was crawling along. These guys somehow decided they had the right to stop traffic as people going along Otto du Plessis (one guy got off his bike to play speed cop, stopping motorists) had to wait for them to pour through even when their robot was red.

I'm all for bike days and rallies, but behaviour like doesn't do much to endear bikers to motorists.

This is just the front going down Race Course road towards the R27. My rear view mirror was full of bikes too!

My question is was there really misbehaviour? Didn't they do motorists a favour by getting everyone out of the way quicker instead of holding up traffic due to unprecedented numbers?

Yeah. Unlike the club that had a quick wedding at Harties - on the bridge... Just literally stopped half way over the bridge, and had a ceremony. Wasn't long, maybe like 3 minutes, but in the meantime traffic flowed in from both sides. Caused soo much traffic chaos.

those deltec batteries are fine and that's a decent price go for it.

The bike does sit for a week sometimes 2 at a time.

Price matters for me. And I plan on replacing the bike within the next 2 years.

The peak charging voltage for Gel batteries is 14.1 or 14.4 volts, which is lower than a wet or AGM type battery needs for a full charge. Exceeding this voltage in a Gel battery can cause bubbles in the electrolyte gel, and permanent damage.

They blocked traffic at a number of intersections and had their moment of silence while all other motorists had to wait.

Its heartbreaking what happened to Aiden but acting just like the taxi that caused the accident just means youre the same self entitled ass-hat that thinks the rules of the road dont apply to you and you have more right to the road than anyone else. If you took part in blocking traffic at the memorial then you are no better than the taxi that killed him.

If your bike stands then you should stick one of those Ctek Maintenance chargers on it. Even the smallest one, the .8, will condition the battery and you will get 4 or 5 years out of the battery instead of just a season.

Indeed, however i'm currently unemployed and studying, those cteck chargers are not cheap. If i had the money i'd just get a AGM battery.
But now you got me wondering, i have a 20w solar panel, i also have a constant current/voltage circuit board, maybe i could make a simple trickle charger from that. however the question about gel batteries still stands.

That is just being poeslik for no reason, regardless of your reason.

I don't have an issue with directing traffic to get it all sorted and moving along.

I wouldn't recommend that, unless you are going to check the battery the whole time. Even at a low current you can overcharge the battery and damage it. The Ctek's discharge and charge the battery over a period to stop sulfation and prevent over charging.

In my experience gel batteries dont give much more lifespan than your average battery. They are sensitive to charging, so if they stand (as bikes do) then you end up with a shorter lifespan than average. I have never heard of then needing a different charge voltage tho. That wouldn't make sense since they are drop in replacements for your flooded batteries. No one is going to change their alternator for the sake of a gel battery. I dont put much store in gel at the moment tho Especially not cheap gel batteries. As you said the VRLA-AGM batteries are much better, and if you want to go top notch then li-ion batteries are the way to go, but they are stupidly priced.

I think I have sold maybe 20 gel batteries over the last 5 years and I have had 2 warranties. Ive sold hundreds of vrla-agm and standard flooded batteries and I have maybe 2 warranties per year, so in comparison, the gels are not great.

If i were to make a simple trickle charger i'd set it to float voltages 13.5 or so at maybe 500ma, the panel also gets 4 hours max direct sunlight rest of the day its full shade.
Hmm seems my options are limited.

Weird thought and I'm sure I'm wrong, but would it not be a heck of a lot easier and cheaper to have a switch that serves to disconnect the battery? Maybe two switches, one for positive and one for negative? So effectively you're "removing" the battery from the bike, and it would be like it's sitting on a shelf?

Could work, sounds like more work though, also the alarm won't work and the dash will reset. The switch would be unsightly unlike a simple connector for the trickle charger or solar charger.

Lastly one switch would work. On the negative.

For me though the trickle charge is less of a concern since the current battery is totally poked, so I have to replace it on a budget. Whether to get the gel which is the cheapest I've seen is the question.

Eish I cringed for you there hahaha, ja I saw it had fat slicks on as well, but doesn't it have a higher center of gravity? I've never ridden a dirt bike.

New flooded batteries have a shelf life of up to a year depending on the tech (usually only a couple of months) until you start using it. Once you start using it, it will sulphate if it stands, so being disconnected on the shelf or in the bike has no difference, its still bad.
We sell a crapload of bike batteries at the end of winter because they stand through the winter and they die. Even if they're disconnected.

Motorcycle batteries have been sold this way since I can remember and I've been in batteries for about 20 years.
