Name and Shame: Unauthorised Debit Orders Thread

Nedbank: Debit order of R149.95 processed on acc no *****. Ref: MC24 3217403 . 01Dec18 at 02:05

So this is very frustrating. I opened a savings account at my bank for my 1 year old son about 2 weeks ago. Got this sms this morning and somehow there is a debit order on his account. How the F*k is this possible?

About NCONUPS:

Mystery R99 debit hits SA accounts
https://www.moneyweb.co.za/news/companies-and-deals/mystery-r99-debit-hits-sa-accounts/

A source at a big bank (not Standard Bank), who spoke on condition of anonymity, says the Nconnups debit orders were considered so suspicious that the bank took a decision to protect its clients by reversing all of them, regardless of whether they were disputed or not. This amounted to over 150 000 debit orders.

For a rough estimate of the total number of Nconnups R99 debit orders across all ‘big five’ banks, one could multiply 150 000 by five to get 750 000. At R99 each, that makes a total of R74 million. Even if the majority of debit orders are reversed, the potential gains for the mystery recipient are still substantial.

Moneyweb contacted Standard Bank to request the following information:

  • The identity of the mystery recipient
  • Whether Standard Bank intends to reverse all Nconnups debits that affected its own retail clients
  • Whether Standard Bank has initiated an investigation into Umvuzo’s vetting of clients.
Standard Bank provided a response, but did not answer the questions. Instead it detailed what actions victims of debit order abuse should take.

Moneyweb requested an interview with the person at Standard Bank responsible for the Umvuzo account but received no response.

Seems Standard Bank can't care to hire competent PR...

Some months ago, i had a R99 debit and i got it reversed with no issues via the call center and a good R5 admin charge.

Then this month, i had a R125 debit and had it reversed as well for another R5 admin fee and went a step further to log a ticket go get more info on how does this debit belong to.

Got the information from my bank.

A colleague of mine with ABSA got hit with a NCONNUPS debit order for R99 again yesterday (18 Dec 20128).
A lot of people got paid early this month so they are probably pushing the debit orders through early as well.

Hope they get shut down permanently.

I'm also with ABSA and originally got hit on 18 Nov, luckily not again this month after putting a stop to the D/O. They seem to have 2 runs per month: 18th and then again on the 1st. If you read the whole thread you will see that people that gets hit on the 18th don't get hit on the 1st and vice versa.
