So atm ive got an Amd athlon 2x 3 455... which has so far been ok for the 2 years ive had it for. but i think its time for an upgrade because ive realized my cpu is running at high loads from the newer games... but im no expert in hardware so i need your help..

budget 1000-2000, must be an am3+ socket (and dont come here saying intel is better because i know :P but im not buying a new mb just yet :3) and the purpose of my rig is mostly gaming.

my first choice would be a Fx 6100

That CPU is okay for games, I would recommend you save your monies until you have enough to get a whole new pc rather.

Except if you are playing Planetside 2 ofcourse :P

I'd say go for the FX-6300 for around R1.6k

I'm at the same junction - running a Athlon X3 435 at stock clocks and I'm seeing most games top out at between 80-90% utilisation, more if I am doing any multiplayer action. Its actually gotten to the point where I know my processor is bottlenecking performance, because my HD6870 is still perfectly acceptable as a GPU, even though I have to contend with 1GB of VRAM.

I've often considered getting a FX-6300 along with a new AM3+ motherboard, but that'll fetch about R2800 currently, money which I just don't have. I'm saving up for a new rig next year because this year will be mostly taken up by console purchases. A Core i5 system from Intel would be only R300 more.

I'd wait until the 25th to make your decision, when AMD announces their plans for next year. AM3+ is a dead-end socket, FM2+ is the way forward for AMD. I'm more likely to get on that horse if they offer a competitive product.

If you want to upgrade now, I'd say go to the Carbonite forums and keep your eye out for a quad-core Phenom II 940 or higher, or a Phenom X6 processor that's compatible with your board. That's just a straight CPU upgrade and should provide a decent boost to your games, enough to tide you over for another year before a full system swap.

If you're on a AM3+ board already, tell us which one.
