Hey guys,
My dad told me to look into maybe upgrading are 4meg line (3 gig cap) to a uncapped line the problem is that I heard from a buddy that after a certain amount of downloading telkom slows your line down and that you would probably be able to download more with a 3gig cap. Is this true? and if not where would be the best duel for uncapped?
Thanks a lot.

Hey guys,

I doubt they slow you down as in overall line speed... I'm with mweb, who channels through telkom - never had my line speed slowed down. Keep in mind though they do limit downloads other than HTTP - thus torrents and with the HTTP exception to rapidshare will only give you about 150kbps (rapidshare like 8kbps). Uncapped users bypass this with a TFVPS, so you can download torrents with 400kbps+ Check out my signature for info on this.

To answer your question, go with uncapped if you're gonna get a TFVPS as well (R70/mo) - I downloaded 150GB this month so far on just torrents!

Telkom does not slow down your line. You pay line rental to telkom. It's like the pipe into your house. Then you pay, say, mweb, for your uncapped. Now if you start using too much water from the supplier they will not make your pipe smaller, they will just not allow that much water to go to your pipe.

Also, 3gb is a bit of a far fetched story. Most greedy isp's only seriously start shaping after 25-30gb...so 10 times what your friends say. But remember, these packages are already shaped to start off with, unless you get a business uncapped ADSL package, which is about R2000 from Mweb.

So yes, depending on what you wanna do and when you want to do it you should maybe shop around. Rumor is that Mweb is pretty good. I myself am with Cybersmart. I have a 10GB cap, but weekends are uncapped. I also have Night Rider, so I set my PC to download between 1am-8am when I am sleeping. And of course all weekend. I have downloaded almost 40GB this month, and I have used just a little over half my 10GB cap.

So things to consider:
Do you want to download during daytime? Is it important that your downloads go fast during the daytime? My internet is UNSHAPED, so it's pretty fast 24/7. They don't make certain things slower during the day.
Do you want to game online? Unshaped might be better for this, don't know how good the uncapped packages is with this. I am sure somebody else could answer this.
