Neotel Info

The ONLY negative I can see is the lack of RJ45. How is this connection meant to be shared (easily, and seamlessly) :o

The callout to convert my system to radio comms is R336 per hour. I dont feel like spending that right now.

What you mean are they going to convert your line to use RADIO and charge you R336 an hour while they do the converting in front of your eyes.

Talking Alarm systems - to switch the connection to the control centre from Telkom landline to Radio - ADT, Chubb, Whoever will charge R336 per hour

As an extra bit of aside information, kilobytes in my post should be kilobits after speaking to a number of people.

Also, international and local connection speeds will be the same (with the outlook of making it faster with time) with international speeds at first not likely to constantly go faster than 600kbps but guaranteed to never go lower than 300kbps.

I'll be in line to cancel my Telkom line. I've had enough, I want out!

so its basically wireless interent ? so this is a no go for online gamers right ?

Perhaps so yes - it will cut down on my Xbox Live time possibly, but all the other perks of being uncapped will be at my mercy :D *snarls*

No definitive answer, but have heard people saying CDMA is a very low latency solution

Well then thats a bit of a pick me up on my previous statement.

I really hoep V3G or ic pops around here with some more definitive info wrt to gaming and CDMA2000, they seem to be knowledgable on the technology.
Them or anyone else that has any info regarding the technology and online gaming :)

/Runs off to Google! :D

My quick search found what appears to be an opinion that CDMA is 100ms lower latency than GSM.

Edit, just found this:
5. Fact - its not just about speed it is also about latency. Average latency on GPRS is around 1.3 seconds, on CDMA it is around 400milliseconds. This is sending a 32 byte packet over the internet.

Why all the secrecy from Neotel? Why not come out with a statement saying all of this with some concrete info, prices and maps?

Then we wouldn't have to rely on tidbits of info from some people lucky enough to receive a call from them.

I don't get it.

Here is some good news for a Friday.

Gave Neotel a call this morning and spoke to a very friendly & helpful chap.

Their consumer product is called “Neo Connect Prime” and they will be providing a “Converged Service”. The handset will have SMS & Caller Line Identification etc. You will be able to use the device in your own geographical(021 or 011 or 012) area.
Geographical Number Portability is available, so you can keep your Telkom number

The recurring rental will be: R496 per month
+ R1 for the device
+ R1 for internet
+ R1 for email
Total Rental: R499 per month billed in arrears. This is for unlimited downloads. No Cap!!!

Call charges per min: 75c to Telkom
75c to mobile numbers
171c to international numbers
All calls are billed per second.

The device is Plug & Play and will be delivered in 48 hours of the order being placed.

(Posted in Off Topic as well. If Mods can merge this in a new Neotel Section please :D)

Speeds of at least 300kb/sec and no cap? I seriously doubt that.
