Neotel ready for Cape Town launch

Telkom's rival Neotel will launch their first consumer product in Cape Town later this month. After several false starts, the telecommunications supplier is at last ready to roll out its offerings in the Mother City.

The official launch date has been set for July 24 and the event will see the CEO and other Neotel staff present their all-in-one handset -NeoConnect Prime - to the local market. The product was commercially launched in Johannesburg on 22 May.

Initial coverage in Cape Town will extend across Bellville, Killarney Gardens, Montague Gardens and Kasselsvlei. Tokai and Steenberg Estate will also be covered, but the CBD will not. "Our biggest weakness at the moment is coverage," said Van der Linde, "but this will be improved over time, as we secure sites." In Gauteng, the metropolitan areas of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Pretoria are already covered, with "more sites being added every week," said Van der Linde. Areas in Durban will also be covered in the next few months.

Nice to see some more progress from them. Every bit of news and every launch is a good thing. Seriously, after the latest round of adsl issues I've had at work, I'd switch to them right away if they offered an Ethernet based device that would work here in the basement.

I would love to switch at home to them, but until the Number Portability issue is sorted I'll wait a little longer. My parents have had our number for over 20 years now, so to change is not worthwhile to them.

But still, go NeoTel! :D
 
so how does this device connect to your pc ? usb ?

Strange to launch on a Thursday. I just had a look at the calendar and 24 July 2009 falls on a Friday.

Perhaps today next year?
 
CBD is covered as I had a Neotel guy here a month or so back and he carried a phone around and made a call from within our server room.

The CBD is not covered. They clearly stated that in the press release a couple of days ago. They might have the towers and everything ready but the service is not available for the consumer offerings as yet.

We also have the Neotel guys in our server room very often and we are in the Southern Suburbs that does not mean they have the CDMA coverage there yet.
