New ADSL packages: how do they compare?

Isn't Vodacom and MTN HSDPA 7.2Mbps?...
Vodacom has 7.2 Mbps, but at a higher price (Broadband Advanced). MTN has a few 7.2 Mbps sites, but I think it is far more accurate to describe their speeds as 1.8/3.6 Mbps.

Analog line rental will increase by 5.5% ...
PrepaidFone (weekly and monthly) as well as postpaid residential and business line rental charges only increase by 5.5% while the PrepaidFone Waya-Waya annual subscription will increase from R120.00 to R130.00 per annum.

I think that the 60 day window on the MTN bundles could reduce the cost of a 1GB bundle to ~R175 with 10% chainstore airtime discounts by splitting a 2GB bundle over two months. There are also cheaper 1GB ADSL bundles from Nashua Mobile (R139) and CyberSmart (R169).

Hold the door.

Look at these: (Copied and pasted from the Matrix in the article)
Telkom DSL 4 Mbps 4 1 GB 616.20
Telkom DSL 4 Mbps 4 3 GB 686.20 - increase - R70 - R35 per gig for the extra 2 gig
Telkom DSL 4 Mbps 4 5 GB 776.20 - increase - R90 - R45 per gig for the extra 2 gig

So Telkom is charging you MORE per unit of bandwidth, the more bandwidth you buy. Isn't it supposed to get cheaper as you increase your purchase volume? Or... what am I missing?

The same with Vodacom HSDPA - which is even worse:

Vodacom HSDPA 3.6 1 GB 289.00
Vodacom HSDPA 3.6 3 GB 589.00 - Increase - R200 - R100 per gig for the extra 2 gig
Vodacom HSDPA 3.6 5 GB 989.00 - Increase - R400 - R200 per gig for the extra 2 gig

Dare I say more? I'm a little outraged...

Well krigerv, the Telkom increase comes from the increase line rental and not for the additional data, but vaild point nonetheless...

Mmm yes that a good idea, splitting a 2GB bundle over two months instead.
By the way you cant compare cybersmarts price of R169, that is only for the data, where all the comparisons in the table include line rental...

So sick of these prices and they never go down!!!! like about the same prices last year and now with an extra gig. Fan-F-Tastic, makes all the diffrence.
all iv read the past year was fibre fibre fibre.? now we have the same speeds and same caps, and we pay more!!! sounds like a FML moment

How come Screamer hasn't been included into the table? Surely they are considered a competitor by now? Personally, I gave Neotel a go and canceled the subscription within 4 days of receiving the device.

I'd say we need to add some fields to the table too. Service and reliability come to mind.
I guess mobility could be added too? You know, to offset the "reliability" rating... LOL

I was thinking the same thing with Telkom Wimax.

rpm, where's that model you used to have to compare services and ISP's to give a rating?

Nope. You'll notice I pasted all the 4mbps Telkom packages (not the slower line-speeds) , and the HSDPA doesn't have speed variants for more/less money. So line rental is the same on all in my comparison.

All the threads and posts in this forum for god knows how long about what will happen when the Seacon cable arrives, and this is what it was for 3gb cap to move up tp 5gb, and prices have gone up, what a ****ing farce! No point EVER posting another article on MYbb about adsl deals or prices or future news, as its probably more rewarding to watch a dog **** dry!

I would be interested to see if telkom will still allow you the "extra" data...

Currently I get 4.5GB blended on 3 GB + 30 GB local

If that formula stays then 5GB blended may be 7.5GB :D and hopefully the 30GB or more :) local stays

If they decided to hard cap then you really only get 500MB more.. :(

Did they mention the DO packages ? or should these not be included in the pricing matrix as the other providers are also the bundled I presume?

When will other ISP's follow suit? (Cybersmart...come on now!!! ;) )

nice one telkom

So, the only thing us poor folks on telkom's basic Do1 package can expect is an increase in our line rental? That stinks like a pile of poo.

At a guess, 90% of telkom's subscribers are on this package?

What did you folks expect from Telkom
Many of you guys that complain about Telkom still support them, so stop complaining or stop supporting them, you can't do both and expect them to change.
